    TIMELINE

    1832

The land on which The Friends School now stands was originally owned by

David Lord and given to his daughter, Grace, at the time of her marriage to Capt

William Wilson. Wilson commenced building Hobartville the mansion.

    1873 or prior

An amount of land (7 acres) was granted to Sir J M Wilson KCMG, alongside the

land of his brother of Capt William Wilson. J M Wilson was once Premier of

Tasmania, the first Hon Sec to the Theatre Royal and for 14 years

tenant/proprietor of the Cascade Brewery. J M Wilson was asked to be Mayor of

Hobart for the arrival of Prince Alfred; Wilson accepted and was awarded with a

knighthood. This land was dissolved in to the Hobartville estate; Hobartville

Terrace were later built on this land.

    1888

Hobartville estate was divided in to allotments and sold off.

    1888, Sep 10

Hobartville Terrace first advertised to let.

New Brick Houses, six rooms, coper, gas, water. Apply J Long, Mathinna,

    Hobartville Upper Argyle Street.

    1889, Jan 28

Hobartville Terrace first advertised for sale:

    1890-1891

    Occupier Mrs. J Long

    1892-1892

    Owner John Long

    1894-1895

    , May 08

    , Apr 30

    , Jun 13

    1895, Oct 12

On these above dates an article was published for the terrace to either let or buy

6 room brick house with mention and inclusion to Pitts Hobartville Store.

The Pitts lived in brick building opposite the driveway entrance in what was then

Carr Street. S Pitt taught at the school on Argyle St. Caroline Pitt is stated below

as having had an easement to the property both dwelling and backyard. There

had been a building erected around 1892 that was Pitts Hobartville Store. This

was when the window outside the backdoor was bricked over and the store was

attached to the terrace filling the section from the kitchen to the road. There was

a large opening in this section facing the road from where purchases could buy

    goods.

As at May 04, 2009, the Title reads: The full free and uninterrupted right and

liberty of way and passage for Caroline Pitt her heirs and assigns jointly with the

Purchasers his her and their heirs and assigns at all times hereafter both in daylight

and in the night for the said Caroline Pitt and her heirs executors administrators

and assigns and her tenants and servants and all other persons by her authorized

or permitted with or without horses and carts and other vehicles either loaded or

empty to go and come and pass and repass in through over and along and upon all

that strip or piece of land marked

I am led to believe too that along the very rear of the lane there was a

shed from which bottled vinegar was sold made from the fruit grown

in the orchard of the property 362 Argyle. The shed still exists at the end

of the drive on the side which is now Auburn House.
