Built in 1931 in Normandy by Sarah and Gera ld Murphy , an eccentr icAmerican couple expatr iated to Par is dur ing the Prohibit ion years , Wea-therbird hosted on board some of the most famous intel lec tua ls and ar-t ists of the t ime. Among them Heming way, Dos Passos , Picasso, DorothyParker, Man R ay and Archiba ld MacLeish. Fernand Léger, inspired bythe schooner, created the "Weatherbird por t fol io" , a ser ies of watercolorpaint ings , and F. S cott Fitzgera ld por trayed the Murphys as the main cha-racters of i t s novel "Tender is the night" .

Cur ious , creat ive and generous , Gera ld and Sarah Murphy were the soul of the"Transat lant iques" , a group of Americans that would sai l across the ocean, fasc ina-ted by European culture and the dolce v ita of the French Riviera .

Weatherbird, whose keel holds , sea led in , a record of the eponymous Louis Ar-mstrong song, was bui lt f rom the drawings and under the super vis ion of VladimirOrlof f , a Russ ian ar istocrat who escaped the Revolut ion, was a f r iend of the Mur-phys and became the f i rst commander of the schooner.

Orloff was an aristocratic young Russian emigree’ whom the Murphys had met atDiaghilev’s atelier in Paris in the early 1920’s.

He has also been the captain of the three boats of the Murphys and designed theWeatherbird, being its captain until 1940.
