One of thesymbols of Alanya – the Alanya castle over the rocky peninsula in the middle of the city. The fortress

that you can see today is a remain of 13th centurySeljuk fortress built after the conquest of Alanya in 1220

byAlaeddin Keykubat I. However, the very first fortifications have most probably been built bypirates occupying the

peninsula in 3rd century BC and later replaced and improved into Byzantine and Roman fortifications over the

centuries.

The latest Seljuk Alanya castle is app. 250m over the sea level and its walls have great 6,5km in length. There used

to be 140 towers along the walls and around 400 cisterns in the castle. The fortifications formed a three separated

divisions – one for the sultan and his family, one for the army and one for the ordinary people. During theOttoman

era the Alanya castle was used only for defensive purposes and there were many private villas built within the

fortress in the 19th century.

The castle serves today as anopen air museum. The entrance to the museum is at the very top of the castle and

except the fortifications and ruins there are great views from the castle as well. Approximately 15 minutes by walk

following the signs "Ehmedek" you will arrive to another part of the castle with great views over both - the Cleopatra

Beach on the western side and the old harbour on the eastern side of the castle. A big part is opened to public so

you can easily walk the fortifications and lovely historical streets of the Alanya castle without any charge.

Practical information:

• the entrance fee to the castle is 10TL. The ticket includes entrance to the inner castle and to the part

"Ehmedek" as well.

• the Alanya castle is opened every day from 9:00 - 19:00 o'clock but it is possible to enter the castle latest at

18:30.

• you can get to the castle from the bus stops in the centre with the bus no. 4

• there are nice local restaurants, souvenir shops, craftsmen places on the castle streets

• there is a buffet and toilet at the castle

• it is possible for wheelchairs to tour the upper castle

• take your camera and take nice panoramic pictures of Alanya

The Red Tower is both a 'eerless work of Seljuk architecture and a buildin that has come to symboli)e themodem city of Alanya. The tower is a defensive and surveillance structure built to 'rotect the commercial activities

of the Seljuk harbor and to uard aainst attacks directed aainst the castle from the landward a''roach.

The tower was built in the year 1## when the Seljuk Sultan Ala!addin %eykubad commissioned it from thearchitect Abu Ali of Ale''o in 'resentFday Syria. Baravansarais were built in the old times for 'eo'le and their animal to stay have a rest and su''ly their needs. Moreover the state used to ive com'ensation to 'eo'le who came to harm and were assaulted where there wereno caraFvansaray. Travellers who came to these caravansarais were rearded as uests and they 'aid nomoney for services like eatin drinkin and re'aration of their shoes and control of horseshoes for 3 days.
