Hilti HIT-HY 270 mortar meets the conditions stipulated by TRAV (Technical Regulations for the Use of Safety Barrier Glazing)Thanks to its highly esthetic appearance and architectural possi-bilities, glass is becoming increasingly important as a supporting structure material. Large, inspiring facades, interior walls and other glass elements reflect our contemporary times and are now standard in many structures.

SAFETY BARRIER GLAZING AND GLASS RAILINGS

Application:

• Safety barrier glazing through linear attachment of glass railings in U-profiles. Loads are securely transferred through the glass elements via the Hilti HIT-HY 270 mortar in the U-profiles.

• Hilti HIT-HY 270 creates a strong, reliable and flexible fastening solution capable of withstanding the high static and impact load requirements. The composite mortar has a National Test Certificate in accordance with the Technical Regulations for the Use of Safety Barrier Glazing (TRAV), an external evaluation and an inspection report.

• Hilti HIT-HY 270 offers maximum application flexibility even for fastenings with an incline of up to 30°, such as glass railings on stairs. Glass elements can be removed and replaced with ease due to its chemical/mechanical properties.

Advantages:

• Secure and play-free fastening• Mortar durability with European

Technical Approval• Maximum application flexibility• Chemical and mechanical compati-

bility• Capable of withstanding environmen-

Hilti has been a reliable partner in glass construction applications for more than 20 years and has many years of experience in a wide variety of large-scale projects: schools, shopping centers, museums and administrative buildings. The laminated safety glass with linear supports developed by Hilti Deutschland AG is used in accordance with Category B of the Tech-nical Rules for the Use of Safety Barrier Glazing (TRAV). The mortar's high level of compressive strength and outstanding ductility properties at the same time translate into secure load trans-fer without any tension peaks.

The glazing's safety barrier function was tested in accordance with Section 6 of the Technical Regulations for the Use of Safety Barrier Glazing (TRAV), while the evidence of load-bear-ing capacity under impact loading was tested by means of pendulum impact tests.

The glass panes are provided with linear support along the bottom edge in a bed of Hilti HIT-HY 270. During the application, the following must be observed:• The glass pane's clamping depth must be at least 100 mm• Tare weight transferred through suitable glass wedge • Evidence of the steel sub-construction under static impact• Top bedding protected by a suitable seal • Top edge of the pane connected to an attached and conti-

nuous handrail profile • Glass pane has linear support; two strips measuring at

least 20 mm tall

Validity

National Test Certificate no. P2014 - 3041 is valid for the construction type described therein. Please refer to the fol-lowing table for the limit dimensions of panes which can be embedded using Hilti HIT-HY 270.

Measurement

For the application case, mathematical evidence of the load-bearing capacity under static impact on glazing and the support structure must be provided in accordance with Section 5 of the Technical Regulations for the Use of Safety Barrier Glazing (TRAV).

Comment:The application also complies with the new DIN 18008 Part 4 standard.

Processing instruction for Hilti HIT-HY 270 mortar for safety barrier glazing Comment: This processing instruction complies with the TRAV and the Technical Regulations for the Use of Glazing with Linear Support (TRLV), as well as the National Test Certificate P2014 - 3041 from the Laboratory for Steel and Lightweight Metal Constructions at Munich University of Applied Sciences and the inspection report in accordance with the TRAV.

1. Handrail structure and clarification before execution: Practical tip

• When designing the railing, ensure that there is a suitable distance between the glass and the U-profile so that fill-ing can take place with the sprayer and/or the sprayer extension.

You will find details on creating safety barrier glazing in • National Test Certificate P2014 - 3041

from the Laboratory for Steel and Lightweight Metal Constructions at Munich University of Applied Sciences

• TRAV – Technical Regulations for the Use of Safety Barrier Glazing

• TRLV – Technical Regulations for the Use of Glazing with Linear Support

2. Materials required for execution: Practical tip Hilti injection materials:

• Hilti HIT-HY 270 mortar • HDM manual dispenser or HDE elec-

tronic dispenser• If necessary: additional sprayer and

sprayer extension (10 x 1 m)

Standard auxiliary materials in glass constructions (no Hilti products):• Suitable glass wedge• Suitable chocks• PE round cord• Suitable film for covering, if necessary• Suitable sealing compound, if nec.

Use a 500 ml film pack with a HDE 500 A dispenser for greater productivity and enhanced working comfort.

Use a sprayer extension longer than 100 mm to improve working ergonomics.

3. Alignment of the glass handrail: Practical tip• Insert a suitable, clean glass wedge (7)

according to standard practice• Adjust the glass pane (2) as stated in

the technical specification and/or in accordance with the Technical Regulations for the Use of Safety Barrier Glazing (TRAV)

• Avoid contact between the glass and the U-profile

Coat the pane with a dark film in the clamping area to filter through the bright mortar.

If and when using foil such as this, check that it is compatible with the mortar prior to the application (see page 3)

• Align the glass pane and fix it with chocks (8)

Position the chocks at the lateral edges of the glass. This ensures that the holes created by the chocks are easier to close once the chocks have been removed.

• The gap between successive glass panes (2) should be sealed with two vertically positioned round cords (9) so as to break up the layer of mortar

(8) Chocks

If there is no mortar between the panes, it makes it easier to remove individual glass elements if glass is damaged.

HIT-HY 270 mortar

4. Preparing the mortar• Please refer to the instructions for use enclosed with the mortar for general infor-

mation about using and handling the film pack for Hilti HIT-HY 270 composite mortar.

5. Adding mortar to joints between the U-profile and glass pane Practical tip• Create the bottom line of mortar along

the length of the pane on both sides using a sprayer with a sprayer extension

• Minimum height of the mortar line: 20 mm

• Check and, if necessary, add to the mortar height after filing

• If a second line of mortar is not to be applied to the top edge, all the inter-mediate space on both sides of the glass can be alternatively filled with a mortar line measuring at least min. 100 mm

It may be helpful to have a depth marker on thesprayer extension.

During the filling process, ensure that no air pockets/air bubbles are added to the mortar

• Precisely insert PE round cords (5) between the chocks from above

• Minimum distance from the top edge: 25 mm

For esthetic reasons (to create a sealing joint of the same shape), ensure that the round cords are attached in a neat and straight manner.

• Fill the gap between the U-profile and the glass pane above the round cord (5) with Hilti HIT-HY 270 up to a mini-mum height of 20 mm

• Draw the joint with a suitable tool such that the top edge of the mortar line is approx. 3 to 5 mm beneath the top edge of the U-profile

• Leave Hilti HIT-HY 270 to cure, remove the chocks and fill any holes created with mortar

Remove any dirt on the glass or U-profile caused by mortar with a sponge before the mortar has cured and/or with a wooden scraper after the curing process.

6. Sealing visible joints Practical tip• Since the HIT-HY 270 mortar does not

have any sealing properties and cannot functionally adhere to the glass, the joints must be sealed with a suitable sealant (if necessary)

Check that the sealing compound is compatible with the mortar prior to appli-cation (see page 3).

Since the surface of the mortar is slightly rough after the curing process, it may also make sense to create a sealing joint for esthetic reasons.
