Spring into Gardening
We had a fantastic turn out at our Hikmat Health-
watch ‘Spring into Gardening’ session on 31st
March. The event was to give users a chance to
swap seeds, find out about gardening and outdoor
activities they can get involved in with Hikmat and
register an interest, contribute to a gardening
questionnaire and vote for the summer Honeysuck-
le Garden Group Trip. Popular choices for the sum-
mer trip were Dartington Hall and Higher Cullaford
in Crediton.
We had over 25
adults plus lots of
children from over
12 ethnicities, some
were new to
Hikmat.

Dental disease can be prevented but not reversed so see your dentist before you experience
pain.
Brush your teeth for 2 minutes twice a day, always before bed
Use a fluoride toothpaste, a smear for babies & up to 3 & a pea sized blob for 3+ & adults.
Spit out after brushing and do not rinse your mouth with water, so the fluoride stays on the teeth longer.
After eating, wait one hour before brushing teeth or tooth enamel could be damaged, which is the protec-
tive coating on your teeth.
Keep sugary foods and drinks to mealtimes only and have healthy snacks.
Visit your dentist regularly.

We are very sad to say goodbye to Jackie who will be leaving Hikmat at the end of April, after 4.5 years working with us. Jackie has always been involved in Hikmat and was such a natural, enthusiastic and hard working leader for the Hikmat Hub Chinese community, where she worked as the Care & Support Worker. She always went the extra mile in arranging group activities, events and outdoor trips, and put-ting forward her many great ideas to improve general knowledge and healthy living. She will be so missed but we hope she will keep in touch. From us all at Hikmat xx
Hikmat Users Test Run the New DCC Self Check Tool
8 services user and from 7 nationalities including Chi-
nese, Philippines, Palestine, Afghanistan, Congo and
Tunisia joined the DCC led focus group test driving
the new online Self-Check tool. It was a mixed group
including some carers, some with little English and
some with little IT skills.
Feedback was taken on board and covered cultural
needs including food and hygiene and also dignity
and clothing.
A survey was also completed with attendees around Healthy Living and if you answered no to a question
you had to navigate web-links to find information. Issue of translating was discussed as an automatic
built in translator is often not accurate and carries risks.
We also highlighted an issue with the website when using the education tab to look to move a child to
another school. The facilitator witnessed issues with the map produced and will get this fixed.
It was a very well worth session and great that the bme community were able to give feedback. Thanks
to Kelly and Martin who were great.
By Musarat Asif (Hikmat Senior Mentor)
Hikmat hosted a workshop on 11th February facilitated by NHS Senior Hepatology Specialist Nurses. It covered infectious diseases such as hepatitis A,B,C and TB, looking at risks, symptoms, testing processes & treat-ments.
18 people attended from 11 nationalities. Everyone engaged in discussions and found it very informative, especially as nurses said all Asian and African nationals are more at risk.
Many of those from an ethnic background may go back to their countries to see family so are more likely to pick things up. Quite often people carry viruses and live healthily with no symptoms until their immune sys-tem gets week then virus can tip over. They advised attendees to requests tests from their GP’s if they may be at risk.
They said hepatitis is not easy to get it unless there is contact with infected blood or infected body fluids. Things spread quicker in developing countries as needles are often changed or disinfested less, and tests are harder to have so people share razors and may not know they are infected. TB is more likely to get is from cough and living with infected person, it is normal practise for new born babies to have a protecting injection against TB, make sure you ask for this if it is not offered. Get Free NHS Dental Treatment
If you would like to benefit from free NHS dental treatment in Exeter please contact 01392 405350.
Treatment is available through the Dental Education Facility based locally, which is part of Peninsula Dental
Social Enterprise. The care would be provided by a dental student in training and supervised by highly experi-
enced dentists in this educational setting.
If you are applying for free treatment you would need to be assessed before being offered a course of treat-
ment to firstly ensure your dental care can be carried out by a student and importantly, that you are willing
to attend a series of appointments. For more information see the website www.peninsuladental.org.uk

Remembrance: Frankie Chui (1962-2016)
Frankie was a Hikmat Service user and volunteer for many years. He gave people a memorable smile and candid attitude that made people feel comfortable. He was a good husband and father.
Frankie and his family arrived in the UK in 1997 after the financial crisis in Hong Kong. While he took some time to settle down he undertook fur-ther study in Christian studies and accounting courses. His hon-est, patient and passionate attitude for helping others gained him many friends in the local Chinese community.
He volunteered for Hikmat Devon, organising lots of activities for our local Chinese community, including supporting our gar-den group with the allotment at the early stages of develop-ment. Frankie truly represented our community’s mantra: Bring-ing people together through healthy living.
He and his family moved back to Hong Kong in the summer of 2014 after his daughter finished her University Degree in Exeter.
He will be missed deeply. Our thoughts are with his family.
