Accreditation status of the Higher Certificate in Photography:

The Higher Certificate in Photography is registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) of the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), qualification ID 88866.

Admission requirements for the Higher Certificate in Photography:

• NSC or equivalent with a minimum 30-39% or better in the language of learning (English) • Minimum of 30-39% or better in four (4) 20 credit bearing subjects (excluding LO)

International student requirements:

International students must ensure that:• they have an equivalent qualification;• the equivalent qualification is recognised by SAQA; and that• they have a valid study VISA issued in the name of Prestige Academy that covers the duration of their

studies.

Higher Certificate in Photography | Faculty of Arts & Design

The Student initially applies with Prestige Academy to study towards a specific qualification. Prestige Academy is currently in the process of a business transfer to become part of STADIO. This will result in the Student obtaining a STADIO qualification when the programme has been completed successfully.

PRE-REQUISITE: Student must have completed a Higher Certificate in Photography to progress to the Advanced Certificate in Photography

NOTE: After completing the Higher Certificate in Desktop Publishing & Computer Art or the Higher Certificate in Photography, the student may articulate to the Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts in Visual Communication Design or Bachelor of Applied Arts in 3D Animation.

ABOUT THIS PROGRAMMEPhotography skills are needed for jobs in almost every industry. Students will gain a sound knowledge with practical skills required to perform effectively in the photography industry as a professional photographer.

The programme equips students with a comprehensive knowledge of photographic or imaging processes, materials and apparatus. Earning this qualification will put you ahead of the competition in the creative and fascinating field of photography. You will acquire knowledge regarding lighting and other technical concerns and to market yourself with an attractive portfolio. This qualification will also teach you about the business, art and science of photogra-phy. The programme instruct students in the mechanics of photography, imaging and studio practices, as well as the business side of the industry.

MODULE DESCRIPTION

History of Photography

In this module the student will have the ability to recall prehistoric photographic inventions, processes, technical develop-ments and improvements, recall historical and contemporary photographic masters, classifying their different styles and approaches and relate to contemporary South African photographers.

Visual Communication

Classify visual literacy and visual literacy skills and comprehend the nature, meaning and approach to visual and photographic communication, and illustrate knowledge of professional photographic markets and target audiences.

YEAR 1

Photography Theory

The focus is on relevant materials, equipment and camera features as well as operational aspects such as camera controls, aperture settings, depth of field, depth of focus, and the scope of films used in photography practice.

Secondly, attention is paid to light, different light sources and the role as well as use of light in photography imaging. The third component explores photography printing and printing processes to establish a fundamental understanding of traditional photography practice before the development and introduction of digital imagining.

Finally, this module explores the foundations of electronic imaging, including the hardware and software related to digital photography, as well as ethics associated with digital photography. Syllabus, Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria

Applied Photography

This module will equip students with knowledge and skills, plan and produce photographic images in a range of locations, process photographic materials correctly within the context of the processing laboratory (demonstration) and computer workstation (digital editing of photos), operate effectively within a photographic studio environment, utilising available light as well as artificial lighting equipment, and select and evaluate the use of photographic techniques, equipment and materials to produce desired photographic imagery.

Professional Practice

Section A: Presentations

This module explores presentations skills which are vital for any photographer working with clients. The primary focus is on public speaking. More specifically, attention is paid to the purpose of presentations in customer relations, the different modes of communication, techniques for ensuring a dynamic presentation, proper planning of a presentation, and designing a pres-entation by using Microsoft PowerPoint as presentation media.

The module develops verbal and visual presentation skills that are appropriate for various professional relationships within the visual communication design environment, particularly in relation to presenting and pitching visual ideas. Candidates are given the opportunity to plan and deliver presentations, accompanied by identifying shortfalls and implementing steps for improvement.

Section B: Career Opportunities

This section of the module will equip students with adequate knowledge and skills to enter a career as a professional photogra-pher either through employment at a photography studio, a career in photojournalism, portraiture, advertising and corporate photography, wedding and special event photography and/or as an entrepreneur with his/her own business enterprise.

Section C: Marketing

This module introduces students to the fundamental concepts of marketing and the principles that underpin the marketing process. In particular, it gives a concise and contemporary overview of the purchase decision-making process by under-standing consumer behaviour and examining the role of marketing research within the changing business environment. This module enables students to understand the key ingredients for success in sales. It covers vital issues in sales such as the types of selling and the stages in the personal selling process.

Section D: Interpersonal Communication

This module will equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to understand and apply key concepts in effective verbal and non-verbal communication concepts within the business work environment. In particular, attention is paid to written communication and business etiquette as it relates to the work place and incorporates techniques for effective letter writing intended for both internal and external stakeholders of a business as well as acceptable professional courtesies.

Image Creation, Composition and Enhancement

Section A: This module is designed to develop essential skills in digital imaging using computer manipulation and photograph-ic software. The module provides students with image editing experience and provides the students with knowledge of the different software functions, as well as a range of imaging and editing tools. These tools are specifically used for creating, manipulating and retouching photographs

Section B: At the completion of this unit of the module the student will have an understanding and adequate knowledge to be able to organize and enhance digital images. This knowledge is an important building block to become ready for your em-ployment as a professional photographer.

Experiential Learning

Experiential learning is a concept associated with career-orientated and vocational training. At this institution, experiential learning specifically refers to job shadowing at a company or organisation. It is of short duration and does not involve any actual work. This is reserved for all higher certificate programmes (NQF 5) that are only offered over a one-year period.
