Kurt Schwitters was born Kurt Hermann Eduard Karl Julius Schwitters on June 20, 1887 in Hanover Germany. He suffered from a massive seizure during childhood, a sign of epilepsy that later left him exempt from military service during World War I. In leiu of military duty, Schwitters went to study at the Royal Academy of Art in Dresden alongside artists such as Otto Dix and George Grosz, both of the Die Brucke, though he never associated with that movement.

His art career started as post-impressionist, but as the state of the war grew darker during World War I, so did Schwitters’ work. As this progression took place, so did his progression into a more expressionist tone in his work. From there, Schwit-ters moved into his most notable works: collage. This style came from litter he found by chance and converted into art.

SCHWITTERS path

to art

transitionto

dadaIn 1919, Schwitters published a collection of poems and texts that made him famous far be-yond the reach of Hanover, where he resided. These texts along with his artwork became key for Dadaism. He coordinated with Herwarth Walden, Hans Arp, and Tristan Tazra and took part in the Sturm exhibitions in New York and Zurich. He also had strong ties to the Bauhaus artists and Dutch Dada-ists and constructivists. He worked to develop a sort of magazine called “Merz”, of which the first issue was dedicated to the Dutch artists he was involved with. The name “Merz” was taken from an advertisement for the “Kommerz-und Privatbank”, a snippet of which was incorporated in an early collage. This phrase became a key part of his identity as an artist, and even started calling himself Kurt Merz Schwitters, or even just Merz. His relationship with the dadaists was questioned by some, saying he was rejected by the move-ment’s artists in Berlin, but he was actually friends with the leader, Richard Huelsenbeck. As his career became more and more closely associated with the dadaist values, which were largely critical of traditional German society, he gained more recognition. He frequently showed his Merz works in Dada exhibitions. He received much criticism of his work, but he thrived under opposition. He described himself as insane and unpatriotic, which is likely why he liked the criticism so much.

Dadaism is said to be an art movement against art. The tensions in the world at the time of its emergence culminated into the first World War. The dadaist movement was critical of the consumer culture the world was starting to seep into, and the work of the movement largely reflects that. Marcel Duchamp’s “ready made” art is one of the finest examples of the resistance to this way of life. Also, the way that Schwitters would at times incorporate found garbage in his work reflects the way the dadaists felt about the world. They felt the world had lost its hope and that it was spiraling downwards... In short, they were a bit dramatic, but with good cause. They used their art to criticize capitalism and corruption in general. The dadaists took art away from being simply a trade and helped turn it into a social and political statement. This set the stage for the re-appropria-tion of art in the twentieth century.

Though Schwitters didn’t invent the art of collage or the dadaist movement, he helped define their place in the modern art world. Schwitters was among the first of the non-representational col-lage artists. He also helped Dada find its way into the minds of people. To this day, he defines what Dada was all about in the art world. He exemplifies the retaliation to the world at large which dadaism was intended to be. His work was influential in the development of future art styles like Pop Art, as well.

Anthony Burgess was an English novelist, poet, playwright and composer born on February 25, 1917, in Manchester, England. In total, he wrote 33 novels, 25 non-fiction pieces, three symphonies, over 150 other musical works and other works. Well known novels included The Wanting Seed, Inside Mr. Enderby, Earthly Powers and A Clockwork Orange, the latter of which was adapted into a popular 1971 Stanley Kubrik film. Burgess died on November 22, 1993 in London.

A vicious fifteen-year-old "droog" is the central character of this 1963 classic, whose stark terror was captured in Stanley Kubrick's magnificent film of the same title.

In Anthony Burgess's nightmare vision of the future, where criminals take over after dark, the story is told by the central character, Alex, who talks in a brutal invented slang that brilliantly renders his and his friends' social pathology. A Clockwork Orange is a frightening fable about good and evil, and the meaning of human freedom. When the state undertakes to reform Alex—to "redeem" him—the novel asks, "At what cost?"

This edition includes the controversial last chapter not published in the first edition and Burgess's introduction "A Clockwork Orange Resucked".

Sol LeWitt earned a place in the history of art for his leading role in

the Conceptual movement. His belief in the artist as a generator of ideas

was instrumental in the transition from the modern to the postmodern era.

Conceptual art, expounded by LeWitt as an intellectual, pragmatic act, added a new

dimension to the artist's role that was distinctly separate from the romantic nature of Abstract

Expressionism. LeWitt believed the idea itself could be the work of art, and maintained that, like

an architect who creates a blueprint for a building and then turns the project over to a construction crew,

an artist should be able to conceive of a work and then either delegate its actual production to others or

perhaps even never make it at all. LeWitt's work ranged from sculpture, painting, and drawing to almost exclusively

conceptual pieces that existed only as ideas or elements of the artistic process itself

In 1905, Gideon Sundback began working at the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing company in Pittsburgh,

Pennsylvania. In 1906, Sunback employed by the Universal Fastener Company in

Hoboken, New Jersey. In 1909, Aronson Sundback married Elvira. Then, Sundback promoted to the position of head designer at Universal

Fastener. Sundback making machine for zippermanufacturing Fastener Lighting Company is therst company to produce ristleting located in

St.Catharines, Ontario. Sundback in 1951 was awarded the Gold Medal of "the Royal Swedish Academy of

EngineeringSciences". Sundback died of heart health declined in 1954and was buried in Greendale,

Meadville,Pennsylvania. In 2006, Gideon Sundback awarded the "Hall of Fame"

by the National inventors for his services in developing the

function of ristleting.

Artist Statements

All students are required to submit artist statement following each project describing the projects objective, their creative process, inspiration and the challenges they faced.

We suggest to include a brief artist statement to accompany complex and elaborate projects with their portfolios.

We also require students to include a project description on their final digital portfolios as seen on the next slide.

THIS IS ME

Jade Milano is a seventeen-year-old graphic designer from Staten Island. Currently, she is a senior at the High School of Art and Design in which she majors in Graphic Design. Throughout her education career she has taken CTE courses such as Computer Technology, Business of Art, Fashion Design 1&2 and Graphic Design 3&4. With the help of these classes, she was able to gain skills in working with computers and adapting to their programs. In addition, she became proficient in Adobe software’s such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop

and Adobe InDesign. Her artwork has also been featured in multiple art galleries at her school, like the Spring Arts Festival and the Graphic Design Gallery show. As a result of her accomplishments, Jade was able to attain an internship in which she worked for the artist Bette Korman. At this internship, her duties included organizing files, editing photos and formatting pages. Subsequently, this only strengthened her skills as a designer and helped her learn new techniques that will only benefit her in the future. Presently, Jade hopes to attend the college Fashion

Institute of Technology and major in graphic design. Overall, her main goal is to become a children’s book writer/ illustrator.

Art and Design Branding Project

Branding/ Package Design/ Advertisements

An assignment that I was given during my senior year of high school was to create a product that would represent my school, the High School of Art and Design. Our product was to relate to all of the art majors that are offered while still appealing to a wide range of our target audience. I chose to create a make up collection focusing specifically on eyeshadow palettes. Each palette represents the certain majors by incorporating aspects of these fields through images seen throughout the packaging and the assigned eyeshadow colors.

Our first step was to come up with concept designs in order to translate our ideas and create a solid layout that we will use throughout the rest of the project. Next, we had to choose a template to use that best fits our product’s description and to later build our designs upon. Once we completed our designs, we printed out the templates and physically assembled them to construct a prototype. In addition, our final step was to come up with an advertisement that grabs the attention of viewers in order to efficiently sell our product.
