THE PIG CITY GARDEN CALENDARBy Daniel Marvin

WEEK of 15-21 feb. ‘10

Dining, Entertainment & Lodging

If you haven’t already done so - this is an excellent time to plan your garden for this coming Spring and Summer growing

season. Sure, I dream of Spring as I bundle up and shovel snow

from house to mailbox while knowing in my heart that it won’t be long before the first crocus will peek through the snow and give me pause to smile!

Now is the time to sift through folders and notes that reflect past successes and failures in our family garden. It helps to write down your thoughts as the year goes along and you see what you might want to add, subtract or change in your garden.

Bring all that in front of you and get your family together - everyone who shares in what comes out of that garden and take time to get all the likes, dislikes and favored items to consider when putting the final plans in focus. It is important to consider if you will be in that same place for a length of time that would make it desirable to plan an asparagus bed or maybe rhubarb bed, both of which take time and effort and patience as you wait up to three years for the first harvest (asparagus) and you take in account peripheral protection needs to make certain it is you and not the deer or other four legged friends that enjoy the treats that are indeed so very special.

Should you desire some special tips on having your own private asparagus or rhubarb bed - just send me a self-addressed and stamped envelope to 2158 Ten Eyck Ave, Cazenovia, NY 13035 and I will do what I can to help you do it right!

Happy Gardening!_______________________________________________

Send guests home happy with a keepsake favor flower seed packets, a fresh flower bouquet, or a satchel of home-grown vegetables from your garden.

Here are some ideas for themes, food and menus for hosting an open air graduation, tea party, spring Easter party, or bridal shower for friends or family, and more expert garden party planning ideas from around the Web - whether you're holding a simple buffet or a 7-course banquet ... these can be searched for on the internet and provide many, many tips.

Perfect Patio / Garden Party - A short list of good tips on how to decorate your garden party using flowers as the focus, from aboutflowers.com.

"Seeds of Kindness" - A Christian Ladies Ministry has plenty of great ideas for a garden banquet themed party. The Christian motif runs through the ideas, but even if that's not your thing, the party ideas and links are first rate.

Must for Mums Garden Theme Party - Geared to 4-8 years olds, the ideas for foods, games, gifts and decorations will make planning an outdoor birthday or celebration a breeze for busy moms.

Garden Party PlanningAs the warms in late spring and summer, there's nothing

quite like an outdoor garden party to celebrate Mother's Day, a graduation, or to just give family and friends their day in the sun.

Make it special by sprucing up an otherwise casual backyard garden with real silverware, elegant tableclothes and, of course, oversized flower centerpieces and fruit bowls for splashes of bright, vivid color.

Like any good party planner you should expect it to rain, and have an alternative space inside where guests can party indoors. After all, there's nothing like being prepared for the worst to ensure it won't happen!

Send out invitations using downloadable clipart or garden photos, then set up any outdoor space decorated with fresh flowers (silk or paper flowers will do if a green thumb isn't one of your strong points,) terra cotta pot utensil holders, or a bright carved watermelon basket you can make yourself.

You don't need an enormous lawn with space for furniture. A small patio, city backyard - or any outdoor space with room for chairs and a group of people - can be a perfect garden party setting.

Compile A "Things I(We) Want To Do This Spring/

Summer" ListFirst things first, check your old list from last year. Reconsider everyone in the family. Has anyone reached a new milestone that would make some

new activity something you can now consider? Is someone finally tall enough to reach the "Line"? Consider celebratory trips around these events for a family

trip everyone will remember.Face it, the sexes are different. Carefully consider what is

age appropriate for everyone in the family. As we all grow what's fun and interesting changes.

If you have children consider what year in school they are. Is something coming next year you can give them a leg up on with a trip here or there. Have them ask their teachers for

any recommendations for summer time activities to enhance next year's school experience.

Are there any family milestones coming. Anyone turning 100 or is there a big once in a life time event like a family reunion. Planning a trip based on local history around these things can give everyone in the family a sense of connection to why they're here and what they might do to enrich their lives.

Budget is a consideration. It's great when money is no object but that's not the reality for most of us. Get everyone involved in keeping costs down. For children this can be quite fun and interesting as this discussion is a chance to consider what the generations ahead of us had to work with.

Put your children in the mind set of what decisions the settlers headed west or the settlers headed to the new world had to make. A discussion along these lines can segway into an appreciation for how full our current lives are now and the many blessings we enjoy. You could even attempt a trip with nothing but what a certain generation had to use. That would be very interesting!

Page 9: Hi Neighbor

Do they have a specialty? (IYour neighbors may love what the contractors did to their kitchen, but can they replace your chimney?)

What are their references? Do they have any former clients who would be willing to let you inspect their work? Are there before and after pics?

Are they bonded, licensed, and insured to perform work where you live? (The rules vary by state and town; check your local government website for specifics.)

Perhaps most importantly: Do you click with each other? Is communication easy? Let your instincts be your guide; if you don’t get a good vibe now, just imagine how bad it’ll be when someone is elbow-deep in your electrical wiring.

RemodelExamine the fine print of the contract. Make sure the

following is included:The deposit: The amounts vary by state and proprietor, but

you shouldn’t be expected to put down more than one-third of the total cost up-front.

A start and finish date. The schedule of payments. (Request that a final payment

of 3 percent to 10 percent is made only upon full completion of the job.)

A clause about binding arbitration; in other words, if something comes up during the work that you are unsatisfied with, you have a right to go to an independent third party who’ll decide how to fix it.

Right of rescission; meaning you have three business days from the signing of the contract to change your mind and get out of it.

Finalize household arrangements. Now that you know when the work will begin, make any

additional plans, such as reserving storage space for furnishings or booking a hotel room for the day when the water will be turned off.

If possible, carve out an oasis for yourself. Select a room that will remain relatively untouched by the chaos and equip it with whatever you might need to keep yourself sane for the duration. (A DVD player, electric teakettle, yoga mat, earplugs, etc.)

Now, hold on tight, the fun begins! Good luck!

Home Renovation ChecklistDon't let a hammer anywhere near your house without

following these steps..PlanMake a wish list. In one column, put your wants. In the other, your needs. That way, when faced with tough choices down the line,

you’ll have a clearer picture of your priorities—what has to happen now and what can wait. (A second bathroom upstairs might be a must; a stainless steel Viking range, maybe not so much).

Determine your budget. Before you meet with a contractor or an architect, you’ll

need a ballpark estimate—then both of you will be able to talk honestly about what’s possible. (P.S.: It’s a good idea to build some padding—at least 10 percent is recommended—into your number, for all those unexpected uh-ohs and might-as-wells that will crop up).

Consult the calendar. What is your timeline for the renovation? If you want the

living room done for, say, Jenna’s graduation party, don’t wait until spring to start talking about it. Likewise, you won’t want to install a new roof when a New England winter is looming—or schedule any major demolition a month before you host a family reunion.

ResearchBegin looking for a contractor. This isn’t the time to crack the Yellow Pages. Ask everyone

you know in the area about their experiences, good and bad. You should also consult the websites for the National Association of Remodelers (nari.org) or the National Association of Home Builders (nahb.org); the professionals belonging to these organizations are bound by strict codes of ethics and business practices. .

Start interviewing contractors. Some key questions to ask: Do they charge by the hour or by the project? (If your

renovation is on the larger scale, push for a flat fee.)What is their policy and pricing on change orders? (If you

are paying by the project, changing your mind along the way can add up fast.)

How many other clients do they have right now? What is their availability? Can they complete the project

in the time frame you expect?

January & February Garden Planning Activities List

January - It’s Time for Clean-up and Prep Work•Walk around the yard, check garden beds for fallen limbs,

and remove.•Check on trellised plants and vines to ensure they are secure

and that arbors or trellises aren’t in need of repairs.•Organize tools, pots, emollients, and soil additives. If you

delayed in having power tools serviced at the end of last season now is a good time to take care of those chores.

•Once your plans are complete, inventory the seeds and bulbs that are on hand. If more are needed begin placing orders for those seeds and bulbs. Check left over seeds from last season to ensure that they have been kept dry. These seeds

can be planted this year, but plan for backup seeds in case the older seeds don’t offer high yield.

•Many trees can be pruned now, particularly non-spring blooming varieties. Avoid pruning early bloomers such as azaleas, lilacs, and rhododendrons. If unsure, check specific information on the plants before pruning and add notes to the garden notebook.

•Starting seeds indoors should begin six weeks prior to setting out seedlings. Depending on the area and climate where the beds are planted, either January or possibly February is a good month for setting up seed trays.

•Save ashes from fireplaces for use in mixing in soil for alkaline loving plants, such as Iris bulbs.

•Keep the bird feeders full during the cold winter months.

February Gardening Checklist•If using raised beds in garden plans use warm weather

spells to build bed frames.

Page 10: Hi Neighbor

civilians around. This is not a new tactic, but based on the success of an earlier battle six years ago in Iraq.

The battle of Fallujah, in late 2004, become something of a case study for military historians and doctrine (“how to fight”) experts. Like Marjah, the residents of Fallujah were warned that an attack was coming, and advised to get out. Most did. The subsequent Fallujah fighting was quite intense, even by historical standards, and the media missed a lot of the important details. What was noticed was how quickly the army and marine troops blitzed through the city, clearing out the 4,000 very determined defenders. The speed and efficiency of the American attack was the result of some unique, in the history of warfare, factors. But the principal reason for the success in Fallujah was the high degree of training the troops had. Many also had months of combat experience in Iraq. These factors (training and combat experience) have long been key factors in combat success. But the American troops in Fallujah had some relatively new advantages, that were used aggressively. These included massive amounts of information on the enemy, and robotic weapons. The standard gear of the 5,000 attacking troops was also exceptionally good by historical standards. Especially notable was the improved body armor and communications gear.

The end result of all this was a two week campaign that resulted in some 500 American and Iraqi casualties, but the obliteration of the defending force (1,200 killed, 1,500 captured, the rest either got out, or were buried in bombed buildings). While the enemy were not, compared to the U.S. troops, well trained, they were motivated, and often refused to surrender. But the speed and violence of the American assault prevented any coordinated defense. The U.S. troops quickly cut the city into sectors, that were then methodically cleared out.

•Spread mature, aged compost and manure on existing beds. These beds can also be covered in polythene sheets to improve soil warming for an early start.

•Determine where seed trays and flats will be started. Verify that the area can provide proper heat and light for seed growth. Check heat mats and lights for repairs or possible replacement.

•Prune grapes and fruit trees that aren’t prone to bleeding and seeping.

•Whether building or buying outdoor fixtures such as arbors, trellises, benches and other lawn items, use February as a shopping and ordering month.

•Spring blooming bulbs that were forgotten last season can be planted as the ground thaws. The bulbs should have been kept at temperatures below 35° for at least sixty days, storing in the vegetable bin of an old refrigerator is a good choice.

Ignoring the planning and prep work that can be completed in January and February can adversely delay planting in later months. When garden prep is put off until the weather warms, the outcome is often a rushed effort prone to weeds and pests. Taking the

planning in monthly steps gives the gardener time to accomplish all the work without rush, ensuring a more through effort. See the article for Spring Schedules for work that should be planned for March and April calendars.

Do You Really WANT This?February 2nd, 2010 at 10:05 am, vickisoup said: My friend moved from NH to MA for a new job. She had

a 30-day waiting period to get on her new employer’s group health plan. After living in MA for a few weeks, she got a “ticket” from the State of MA for “failing to have health insurance coverage”. The fine was over $400! She had not accessed any healthcare services during that 30-day waiting period. She cost the government nothing. She cost the people of MA nothing. She had to pay a fine for living in MA for 30 days without health insurance.

First of all: How did they KNOW she was there and that she did not have healthcare coverage? Maybe she had COBRA from her prior job?

Secondly: Is this REALLY how we want our “law enforcement” spending their time??

Fallujah In Afghanistan February 7, 2010: For several weeks now, U.S. and NATO

commanders have been talking to the media about Operation Moshtarak. This is basically a battle for control of the town of Marjah. This is a Taliban controlled city in Helmand province (where most of the worlds’ heroin supply comes from.) There are 80,000 civilians in Marjah, and at least 2,000 Taliban gunmen (and a similar number of people working for the drug gangs). The place is a major base for the Taliban, as well as the drug gangs that keep the Taliban supplied with cash and opium. Now, normally, you want to have the element of surprise when you attack a town. And with all their helicopters and warplanes, the foreign troops can obtain surprise.

But in the case of Marjah, NATO doesn’t want to surprise the civilian inhabitants of the city, but to warn them, and encourage them to get out. The more faint hearted among the Taliban will also flee. That will leave the hard core fighters, who can be more easily killed or captured without a lot of

The terrorists that got out later, all repeated the same story. Once the Americans were on to you, it was like being stalked by a machine. The often petrified defender could only remember the footsteps of the approaching American troops inside a building, the gunfire and grenade blasts as rooms were cleared, and the shouted commands that accompanied it. If a building was so well defended that the American infantry could not get in, they would just obliterate it with a smart bomb. They used smaller weapons, like AT-4 rocket launchers, many of which fuel-air explosive (thermobaric) warheads. These would use an explosive mist to create a lethal blast, capable of clearing several rooms at once. The defenders could occasionally kill or wound the advancing Americans, but could not stop them. Nothing the defenders did worked, and the American tactics developers want to keep it that way.

The speed with which intelligence information (from troops, electronic intercepts, and constant live video via UAVs and gunships overhead) was processed enabled commanders to keep the battle going 24/7. The defenders were not ready to deal with this, and many of them died while groggy from lack of sleep. When in that condition, you are more prone to make mistakes, and the attackers were ready to take advantage.

Compared to earlier wars, there has never been anything quite like Fallujah. The Pentagon saw this a good example of how to clear a city of fanatical defenders, with minimal friendly, and civilian casualties. Fallujah was seen as the future of warfare. How accurate that assessment is will be seen soon in Marjah.

Some Very Good Advice An old man, a boy & a

donkey were going to town. The boy rode on the donkey & the old man walked. As they went along they passed some people who remarked it was a shame the old man was walking and the boy was riding.

The man and boy thought maybe the critics wer e right, so they changed positions.

Then, later, they passed some people who remarked, ‘What a shame, he makes that little boy walk.’ So they then decided they’d both walk! Soon they passed some more people who thought they

were stupid to walk when they had a decent donkey to ride. So, they both rode the donkey.

Now they passed some people who shamed them by saying how awful to put such a load on a poor donkey. The boy and man figured they were probably right, so they decide to carry the donkey.
