About Habitat for Humanity International
Habitat for Humanity International’s vision is a world where everyone has a decent
place to live. Anchored by the conviction that safe and affordable housing provides a
critical foundation for breaking the cycle of poverty, Habitat has helped more than 3
million people construct, rehabilitate or preserve homes since 1976. Habitat also
advocates for fair and just housing policies and provides training and access to
resources to help more families improve their shelter conditions. As a nonprofit
Christian housing organization, Habitat works in more than 70 countries and
welcomes people of all races, religions and nationalities to partner in its mission.
Habitat has supported an estimated 1.5 million individuals in the Asia-Pacific
region, where it has been active since 1983.

About Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka
Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka is a registered non-governmental organization
whose mission is to provide simple, decent, affordable housing to people in need.
To receive assistance from a local affiliate project, a family must live in unfit or
inadequate housing and must not be able to afford or obtain better housing through
conventional means. Partner families are selected based on their ability to contribute
labor and repay the cost of the house.
Created in 1995, Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka (HFHSL) completed building of
it's 10,000th house in 2008.

From the National Director
Good-bye... It is that time to say goodbye. Thirteen exciting years of challenges and opportunities, and previously five years of serving on the Board of HFHSL. Probably the work during the Tsunami being the most memorable; serving the poor and needy with great partners and donors has been a wonderful and unforgettable privilege.
This past year we have entered into innovative work, in addition to our regular programs. I was invited by the New York University Abu Dhabi to speak at the launch of Engineers for social Impact. This is a program that hopes to bring Corporates – Academics and NGO’s to work together for social development. A group of 48 Students and Lecturers travelled to Sri Lanka and built a Community Center in Negombo over a period of six days. Working with HFH Australia, we began a 3 year project on Land security for vulnerable families (esp. women) which will both advocate and empower them to access and claim their rights. Working with the University of Moratuwa a special ERP program is launched which will display on Google maps all houses that we build in the future and this will demonstrate an extreme transparency of our work. This is the first of its kind for Habitat. The four thousand housing project funded by the Government of India and in partnership with the Government of Sri lanka, the 261 houses being rehabilitated in Vakarai and funded by the London Stock Exchange complete some of the highlights of the year.
However, none of this would have been possible without the committed and dedicated staff most of whom have served with me over this whole period of time and with whom I have had the wonderful privilege of working alongside. The Board of habitat whose sacrificial time, support and advice is the backbone of making things happen. The Asia Pacific Staff who support our program and make sure we keep on track – we could not have done it without all of you.
I wanted a perfect ending. Now I have learned, the experiential way, that some poems don’t rhyme
–some songs are not in tune and some stories never quite end. Life is about not knowing, having
to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing perfectly what is going
to happen next.

HFHSL Loan Program
This program supports families who are underprivileged and either residing in dilapidated housing or living
in unsanitary conditions in the East, Central, West and Southern parts of Sri Lanka. The program provides
housing finance access for a safe and decent house; for improved sanitation and hygiene; and micro-credit
for livelihood support projects.
PROGRAM GOAL
To improve the living conditions of underprivileged families in Sri Lanka and enable them to uplift their living standards by supporting them through housing enabling initiatives and environmental initiatives.
Improved Housing
31 year old Nilanka Shiromi and her husband
Suranga always dreamed of improving their home
but could not afford to do so due to their low income.
Surangi is a carpenter while Nilanka is a housewife.
They live with their two children in Moratuwa, West
of Sri Lanka. Through their local community
organization they heard about Habitat and applied
for assistance. They received a USD$200 loan to
plaster their three-room home. Since then, they
have worked hard to regularly repay their loan installments of USD$10 per month. The family has many
plans for the future and hope to receive a second loan from Habitat after repaying their first. “I now want to
color-wash the house because it looks beautiful and a beautiful house makes me and my family happy”
says Nilanka. Habitat house improvements have Nilanka and her family to find comfort and stability at
home.
Uplifting living standards though environmental initiatives
Habitat home partner Kalaivani Kannan is a widow raising two young daughters in Kaluthavalai village, Batticaloa. Kalaivani works as a day laborer to support her family. When building her home with Habitat for Humanity, Kalaivani learned how to make a compost bin and received seeds and plants to start a home garden. As her interest in gardening grew, so did her daily income. Kalaivani now grows banana trees in addition to her vegetable garden and earns up to USD $20 per month selling excess produce. She is now able to pay for both of her daughter’s school fees. Kalaivani was also able to use this extra income to install a water tank and connect her house to running water.

Brandix donates a house for disabled Ranjith
48 year old Sheela Rajapakse works at the Brandix Garment Factory in Seeduwa and lives with her family in Minuwangoda, Gampaha, Western Sri Lanka. Her husband Ranjith Fernando has been paralyzed from the waist down as a result of a terrible accident where a tree that he was trying to cut down fell on him. Their two children: Dilini and Iroshan aged 14 and 12 years respectively attend school and have to walk a quarter mile every day. The dwelling that they have been residing in can hardly be called a home. The ‘house’ has polythene Film sheets for walls and a tin roof. There is no toilet in the vicinity and no water supply. There is also no electricity and as a result, the children find it difficult to study in the evenings when it gets dark. Furthermore, when the rainy season arrives, it makes almost no difference if they are in their ‘house’ or not, as their dwelling place gets flooded and all their belongings, as well as the family members, get soaked. Sheela could not stop smiling at the thought that she would soon have a proper home. She said “Habitat and Brandix were God sent. My children will now have a safe and dry place to study in the evenings and can do well in school. I am extremely happy and grateful!”
The house was dedicated in January 2013

“My hope for this community, after seeing how close it is, is that by having this
community centre, the people’s community spirit will be enhanced and that they
will have fun in it. I can see that they have had a life that is harder than mine and I
hope that this centre will bring them together. Since education is important, I also
hope that they will hold some classes here that will assist them to go a long way.
To anyone who is thinking to volunteer, I would say – go for it, because you will
be doing something good for a community. And if you are really the skeptical
type, go out there, go outdoors, do the work and prove yourself wrong.”

SRI LANKA REBUILD 2012
24 year old Julia from Tauranga, New Zealand volunteered with her dad Phil Price. I found her having an amazing time working alongside her father.
“In New Zealand, I work for a newspaper company. This is my 2nd build; the first was the Jimmy Carter build in Cambodia.” says Julia, “And it’s my dad’s 5th build” she adds smiling.
“I have had an amazing time volunteer both here and in Cambodia. My parents and my nanna (grandmother) have been very supportive and amazing. I am also thrilled by my fellow country mates. I am part of a great team. We all get along well and work is made fun in spite of it being sometimes quite challenging.
The satisfaction that I feel after the house is completed and handed over is truly immense. I know that I have done something useful to somebody and made their life better”
MANGALIKA AND SUGATH (house no. 2 ) “We used to live in a house where many more families lived with us. And now, it is such a good feeling to have a house all to ourselves and most importantly, a place we could call home! The children are happy to live in a different environment because they have better facilities to study and play. We have a good understanding and relationship with the neighbors. We feel secure in this community because everyone is there for each other when someone is in need.
The children are very happy here because they have made friends with the neighboring children and they all get together to play in the evenings. They even have their own volleyball court.
Everyone has decided to build a gate so that intruders cannot enter the premises and thus we can all sleep peacefully at night. My husband is determined to improve the house. I have also been able to grown manioc, Jak trees and flowers in my garden, in my spare time.”
