Hessle Sporting Club NEWSLETTER 2nd Edition February 2013 Chairman’s Update HAPPY NEW YEAR! It has been 3 months since myself and the current committee were elected at the AGM . Until you look deeper into the club and see what is happening on a day to day basis it really is difficult to see what it takes to run a club of the size of Hessle Sporting Club. For that reason I am indebted to the work that the committee do behind the scenes and feel that as a club we will realise the many successes we have planned. The fact that we send 25 teams out onto the field each week with a smile on their faces is the biggest victory we have. Kids in particular are naturally competitive but allowing them the freedom to enjoy the game and have no pressure to win at all costs is imperative at a young age. Teaching them to understand the game, helping them develop fundamental skills and techniques is far more important , although we obviously still want them to win as many games as they can. Winning breeds confidence after all. We are working on securing funding to develop our coaches so they can benefit from enhanced coaching courses. We also want to keep educating the children’s parents to allow their children to just play and enjoy the game. Let them learn from their own mistakes. Backed by various FA campaigns we will keep sending the positive messages. Another success was the launching of the Touchline Marshall scheme at all home games and the feedback we get from this is good. Hopefully it will continue to deter any unruly behaviour on the touchline. On the pitch there have already been various successes. The U13 Sharks and U12 Spitfires have both made the Cup Finals and there are several teams in the Plate Quarter Finals. The U10 Piranhas won phase 1 group 1 whilst the Stingrays finished 3rd in the same division after only gaining promotion last season. The U9 Marlins and the U10 Swordfish have both won promotion from their respective group 3’s whilst we also welcomed a new Under 9 team in the Cobras led by Chris Allen. The Spitfires and Sharks are also in league title contention in the league and are in the quarter finals of the prestigious Alf Bolder County Cup. Individually Ben Adamson, Jamie Mist, Harry Fenton and Ciaran Warrington all departed the club as they signed for Hull City Centre of Excellence and the club wishes them all well in the future. The first team is something that we wish to develop to give the juniors something to aim towards. As a result we will be looking to enhance our off the field team with the appointment of a commercial manager for senior football and a new physio in the new year. We are also putting in place plans to enhance the options available to players that fall into the 16- 19 age group. . Hessle Sporting Club want, and need, each team, each player, each parent and each volunteer to be proud of Hessle Sporting Club. To work together, support each other, come together. With this in mind Hessle Sporting Club can and will be the best club in the region for many years to come. Rich Nichols. Chairman’s Update HAPPY NEW YEAR! The Spitfires and Sharks are also in league title

CONGRATULATIONS

AARON CLARK, of the SHARKS U13’s

TEAM WHO IS NOW ON A SIX WEEK TRIAL

WITH

SCUNTHORPE UNITED.

The English Karate Federation held their annual Kyu Grade championships on the 20th January, and among the winners and newly crowned National Champions was 9 year old Hull schoolboy Ellis Miller. Ellis trains within the Wado UK Karate group at the Hull Zanshin

Karate Club at the Cottingham Pavilion where he has been learning karate for around two years. Entered in both the Kata (Forms), and Kumite (Fighting) sections for his age group, Ellis was to achieve his success in the Kumite section. These groups are usually rather large because of the popularity of Karate among children, and this category was to be no exception. It was split into two pools, containing around 40 boys in total. Ellis managed to beat all those within his own pool, booking himself a place in the final, with the winner of the second pool.

The final was almost a walk in the park for Ellis, as he managed two head kicks in quick succession, securing the first six points on the scoreboard for himself. As the 1 ½ minutes of allocated time came to an end,  after a total of six matches, Ellis had a comfortable margin and secured his most important gold medal so far. Ellis is also a keen football player, and spends much of his time training within the Leeds United and Hessle Sporting Piranhas framework. On this occasion however, it was extremely pleasing to see him rewarded for his hard work and dedication within Karate.
