1305 Plank Road Menasha, WI 54952 Heckrodt Wetland Reserve includes 76 acres of forested wetland, wetland meadow, open water, and upland field communities. The wheelchair & stroller-friendly 3+ mile trail system includes 2 miles of boardwalk that allows access to the wetland without getting wet feet! The Reserve is home to a variety of mammals, birds, insects, reptiles, and amphibians. Facilities include a nature center with indoor living wetland and live reptiles, amphibians, and fish, as well as mounted specimens of Wisconsin mammals and bird species. Educational programs are provided for schools, daycares, special focus groups (pre-school, grade school, scouts, and senior citizens), and the general public. Our goal is to provide visitor education while fostering an ethic of environmental stewardship in a fun, hands-on atmosphere. Heckrodt Wetland Reserve includes 76

Beautiful Butterfly

Learn about the remarkable change a caterpillar makes to become a butterfly. We’ll look for these fluttering beauties during a hike.

Wildlife Water Safari

Thursday, July 16th - 9:30-10:30am

Everybody’s thirsty. Enjoy a refreshing day with outdoor water stations. Take a hike to find water sources for people and for wildlife around the Reserve.

Fairy Forts and Animal Homes

Thursday, August 13th - 9:30-10:30am

Learn about different animal habitats in the wetland! Then build your own fairy fort out of natural materials found around the Reserve.

Wide Open Prairie

Thursday, August 20th - 9:30-10:30am

Let’s find out about what lives and grows in the wide open prairie and fields. Then we’ll go outside to net some bugs! We will also visit the honey bee hive.

Trees and Me

Thursday, September 17th - 9:30-10:30am

Discover why trees are important. From their leafy branches to their tangled roots, trees provide a habitat for many plants and animals. Take a hike and look for animals that live in trees.

Bat in the Hat

Thursday, September 24th - 9:30-10:30am

Are bats really blind? Learn a little more about these flying mammals. Take a hike and look for places they might live on the Reserve.

Leaves of Many Colors

Thursday, October 15th - 9:30-10:30am

Fall is fun! Let’s explore leaves of many colors. Collect some leaves and make an art project. Then jump in a pile of leaves.

Oh Deer

Thursday, October 22nd - 9:30-10:30am

Learn about the deer’s habitats and what they need to survive. Take a closer look at what deer eat and how theyadapt to winter. Go on a hike looking for deer at the Reserve.

Terrific Turkeys

Thursday, November 19th - 9:30-10:30am

Learn about wild turkeys. What do turkey feathers feel like? Discover what turkeys eat and practice your turkey calls!

Heckrodt’s “The Mitten”

Thursday, December 10th - 9:30-10:30am

Children will help fill a giant mitten with Heckrodt wildlife during the reading of The Mitten, by Jan Brett. Puppets and animal pelts will be used to share information about how animals adapt to the winter.
