We hope that your fall has been as productive and enjoyable as ours has been. Seems hard to believe that we are approaching the half-way point of our school year already. Next month, we will share our annual report to patrons in regard to student achievement, finance, membership, etc.. We continue to make gains in all areas of our curriculum and we are excited for our students.
We are about ready to launch our school-based business utilizing students in the accounting, digital design, agriculture, and industrial technology areas. Our primary goal is to provide real-world business experiences for those involved. The students in the production department will utilize a laser engraver, a computer controlled plasma cutter for metal, and a computer controlled router for wood. We will start small, with a few projects to choose from as possible gifts for the holidays. Hopefully, after the first of the year, we will be able to do more custom work. Our hope is to demonstrate the laser and show some of the possibilities during a basketball game this season. All proceeds from the sale of projects are rolled back into the business for eventual purchase of additional equipment and software.

OUR MISSION: The Heartland Community Schools of Henderson & Bradshaw is dedicated to educating all students by providing challenging opportunities to learn according to individual needs.
School Closing Information
As the winter approaches, occasional bad weather necessitates the closing of school for the safety of our students. School closing information will be announced over the radio station KAWL (1370) and television stations KHAS, KLKN, NTV and KOLN.
We also use an automated phone message service through School Messenger to notify parents about school closings as well. With this service it is very important that we have current numbers on file. Please call the school office if anything changes.
You may also call our school closing phone line at 402-723-4421. If a decision has been made the night before, the closing will be announced around 10:00pm. In the mornings it will be announced on the half hour from 6:30am to 8:00am.
Heartland 4th Grade Student Receives Grant!
Heartland fourth grade student, Meggan Friesen, was recently awarded a $500.00 grant from Kirby’s Dance Studio in York. Meggan has chosen to purchase headphones for her
class to use when working with technology at school. The remaining funds will support Circle
of Friends. Congratulations Meggan, and we thank you for your efforts and dedication to
Heartland Community Schools.

Heartland FFA Chapter The Heartland FFA Chapter has been very busy these past few months. In September, the chapter attended Husker Harvest Days to learn about all of the businesses that support the agricultural community. To enter the day-long event, each member was required to bring five canned food items to donate to a local food pantry. Members donated 187 pounds of food to the Heartland United Way’s Food 4 Families Food Drive. While members were at the event, they were expected to complete a scavenger hunt hosted by the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture, Science, and Natural Resources. The scavenger hunt is meant to expand the knowledge of students in the area of agricultural pathways. Along with the donations of canned items, there were many opportunities to earn grant money for the chapter. The chapter officers were given t-shirts and took a picture together to receive a $100.00 scholarship for the chapter. Big Iron also had a scavenger hunt that would give each participant the chance to win $500.00 for their chapter. In October, Heartland sent members to District Land Judging and had four members compete at the state level. Members of the chapter prepared for the contest weeks before the event. They learned how to read a judging card and how to tell whether or not the land someone owns is good for planting crops or raising cattle. Tyler Lewis placed first at Districts and his team qualified to compete at State. The Heartland team placed 25th at the next level of competition, where Tyler also received an individual ribbon. Heartland sent eight members to represent the chapter at the National FFA Convention and Expo in Indianapolis, Indiana, October 24th through the 27th. The members left Nebraska on October 23rd and toured several facilities in Missouri and Indiana throughout the week. Some of the businesses were Bayer Agriscience (Kansas City), the Dixie Chopper lawn mower headquarters, a koi and goldfish hatchery, and a honey bee farm. At Convention, the members were given a chance to explore the booths and talk to all of the different career and college representatives that were in attendance. They also attended the leadership workshops that made the participants think about their strengths and weaknesses. Member Lauren Quiring also represented Nebraska in the National Band, and had to be in attendance from October 21st through the 27th.
ROYCE SCHWEITZER 2018 EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR! Each year the York Area Chamber of Commerce selects an exceptional teacher
upon whom it bestows high honor. The 2018 Educator of the Year Award went to Royce Schweitzer during the Chamber’s annual Salute to Education. Schweitzer is known and respected statewide for his ability - year after year - to mold the Heartland Huskies into one of the state’s top bands regardless of school size.
Heartland High School Principal, Tim Carr, who nominated his musical colleague, wrote: “Mr. Schweitzer has been a phenomenal leader of the Heartland Band program. I can’t give away all of his secrets, but I am thoroughly impressed at the lengths he goes to in order for students to learn and be prepared for performances. Performances are exactly what our students prepare for whether they are in theater, our gymnasium, at district music contest or marching in a parade. Our students are prepared.”
“For parades, Mr. Schweitzer measures the routes, takes a video of the route and discusses specifics with the band. When students are unsure of their marching, they take time during lunch for individual lessons. Mr. Schweitzer has called upon me to be a judge as the different rows marched. To test their ability to march in step and keep time, each row marched with their eyes closed. This is not only effective, but it motivates students and they march with pride,” Carr continued. Congratulations Mr. Schweitzer!

Sophomores: Apply Now for Summer Leadership Seminars!Sophomores can apply to attend HOBY (Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar) and NLS (Nebraska Leadership Seminar). These are 2-3 day leadership seminars held each summer where students learn leadership skills. HOBY will be held May 31st through June 2nd on the Concordia University campus in Seward and NLS will be held June 13th through the 16th on the Southeast Community College campus in Milford. FBLA Members Host BINGO Night at the Care Center
Ten Heartland FBLA members hosted BINGO Night at the Henderson Care Center on Tuesday, October 23rd. Kate Bergen, Colton Monnier, Timberly Carr and Odessa Ohrt led the group by calling out the numbers while Kalea Wetjen handed out the prizes to the lucky winners. Other members attending BINGO Night were Jackson Stebbing, Benjamin Mestl, Rhianna Wilhelm, Elizabeth Mestl and Dawson Ohrt. The members visited with the residents and enjoyed cookies at the end of the evening. The FBLA members always look forward to playing BINGO with the residents.

VETERAN’S DAY 2018 Monday, November 12th, Heartland students, staff and community members honored Veterans at the annual Veteran’s Day program. The program was organized and presented by Superintendent, Mr. Brad Best. A highlight of the program was Mr. Best presenting Bradshaw resident Mr. Don Klute a “Quilt of Valour” . A “Quilt of Valour” is an award to those who have been touched by war. It says, “Thank you for your service, sacrifice and valour in serving our nation”. Ms. Brooklyn Epp, a senior, at Heartland sang the “Star Spangled Banner” and the Colors were presented by Cub Scout Pack 131. All Veterans in attendance received a personal introduction by Heartland’s National Honor Society. As part of our celebration, students in grades 4th through 12th were given the opportunity to take part in an essay contest sponsored by Henderson State Bank, who generously donated prize money for two divisions and gave awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place within each division. Students in grades 4th through 6th wrote about the topic: “Why I Appreciate America’s Veterans”. Our judges were four volunteers: Tom Vaught (United States Army and Air Force Veteran and a member of The Veterans of Foreign Wars), Elaine Vaught (member of the Auxiliary of The Veterans of Foreign Wars),Virginia Fay (member of the Auxiliary of The Veterans of Foreign Wars), and Evelyn Baston. We appreciate and sincerely thank Henderson State Bank and our judges. Winners in each division read their essays during our program and did a fantastic job.

The National Honor Society, FFA, and FBLA of Heartland Community Schools will host a food drive at the school. The donations will be distributed to people in our community and the immediate area within our district. The generosity will be appreciated by the families and individuals receiving these gifts. The food drive will start on Thursday, December 6th, 2018, and will end Wednesday, December 19th, 2018. Food will be delivered on Thursday, December 20th, 2018.

Dec. 6th: SOUP AND CRACKERS
Dec 7th: PASTA: spaghetti, lasagna noodles, noodles, macaroni, canned sauces, macaroni and cheese.
Dec. 10th: CANNED VEGETABLES
Dec. 11th: BREAKFAST: Cereal, pancake mix, syrup, muffin mix, jelly and pop tarts.
Dec. 12th: CLEANING SUPPLIES: Pledge, dishwashing soap, Ajax, Windex, Mr. Clean and sponges.
Dec. 13th: PAPER AND PERSONAL: Soap, toothpaste, toilet tissue, paper towels, Kleenex, deodorant, shampoo, combs, razors and toothbrushes.
Dec. 16th: PROTEIN: Tuna, peanut butter, cheese whiz, salmon, and chicken.
Dec. 17th: DESSERT AND CHRISTMAS FOODS: Cake mix, Jell-O, pudding, chocolate chips, pie fillings, nuts, Christmas candy, cookie and bar mixes.
Dec. 18th: APPLES, CANNED FRUIT, AND ORANGES
Dec.19th: FINAL DAY OF DONATIONS
6-12th Grade Holiday Concert & Social
There will be a 6-12th Instrumental and 7-12th Vocal Christmas Concert on Monday, December 17th at 7:30 followed by a cookie social in the cafeteria. The social is sponsored by the band parents. Junior high band, senior high band and the senior high choir members are asked to bring 2 dozen cookies per family to the kitchen before the concert.
K-6 HOLIDAY CONCERT
There will be an elementary choral concert on Thursday, December 6th, 2018 . They will be performing at 2:30pm and 7:00pm in the theater.

For the Safety of Our Students STATE LAW:(1) Upon meeting or overtaking, from the front or rear, any school bus on which the yellow warning signal lights are flashing, the driver of a motor vehicle shall reduce the speed of such vehicle to not more than twenty-five miles per hour. The driver shall bring such vehicle to a complete stop, from either direction, when the school bus is stopped, the stop signal arm is extended, and the flashing red signal lights turned on, and shall remain stopped until the flashing red signal lights are turned off, the stop signal arm is retracted, and the school bus resumes motion. This section shall not apply to approaching traffic in the opposite direction on a divided highway or to approaching traffic when there is displayed a sign as provided in subsection (8) of this section directing traffic to proceed. Any person violating this subsection shall be guilty of a Class IV misdemeanor, shall be fined five hundred dollars, and shall be assessed points on his or her motor vehicle operator’s license pursuant to section 60-4.182.
