eTwinning Project “Healthy Living”

One of the activities of this eTwinning project was “Healthy Eating”. After that the students did power points, projects, charts and posters about healthy eating, they did a practical activity which they enjoyed a lot. This activity involved planning, selecting the ingredients, making a list of hygienic measures, and actually carrying out the activity.

The planning involved some brainstorming of what healthy food was feasible to prepare in a Science lab. They agreed on preparing something with fruits. The students discussed what fruits to bring. They did a list of things that they needed for this activity. These were chopping boards, bowls, knives, table cloths, spoons, forks, etc. The teacher brought these. The students brought a lunch box, a spoon and a fruit each. The teacher also brought the light yogurts, skimmed milk, weetabix and some extra fruits.

The planning also involved a scheme of work. The students had to work in threes. They agreed on the order in which groups were to work.

Hygienic measures involved washing hands before the activity, making sure that all utensils were very clean, washing all the apples and grapes, peeling the kiwi, oranges, bananas and mandarins. They had to be very careful to cut the fruits only on the chopping boards and if a piece fell from the chopping board onto the bench it was thrown away immediately.

They also planned the precautions to take. They had to handle the knives with care and make sure that when they borrow the cutlery, they had to wash them again before every use. It was to be sure that no cutlery was left on the bench and then reused to cut the fruits without washing it first.

The activity involved comparing a traditional gateaux with a healthy gateaux. Here, the students revised the first topic of Science. They analysed all the ingredients.

Sponge is made from: flour – carbohydrates – used for energy eggs – proteins and fats – used to build the main structural material of the

body and for energy margarine – for energy (to avoid) sugar – for energy (to avoid)

Cream is made up from: milk – proteins – to build body structures fats – for energy (to avoid)

Jams – rich in sugars (to avoid) Chocolate – rich in sugars and fats (to avoid)

Sugars are to be avoided because they can lead to obesity and diabetes. Fats are to be avoided because they can cause obesity, blockage of the

arteries and veins, etc.

A traditional gateaux is not so healthy because it is rich in sugars and fats. So the students prepared a healthy gateaux.

Instead of sponge they used weetabix with skimmed milk. Instead of cream they used light yogurt Instead of jam or chocolate they used thin slices of different foods.

Weetabix is rich in fibre that prevents constipation and prevents cancer of the intestines.Skimmed milk contains proteins and calcium that is good for bones and teeth.Light yogurt is also rich in proteins and calcium.Fruits are rich in vitamins and minerals that help the body work well.

They prepared multiple layers of these and decorated with the different friuts.

This was a very enjoyable activity and every student ate her small gateaux at the end of the double lesson.
