Healthy College Survey Results and Analysis - Students 2012

Highlights of the 2012 Healthy College Survey show:Number of students selecting healthy food options has increased by 10% at both Kings Road and GoschenNumber of students drinking alcohol daily or twice a week has fallen by 10%Number of students who have never smoked has increased 6% (although those who do smoke do so more frequently)Number of students who have never taken drugs has increased by 12%Increase in awareness of sexual health services has increased by 14%

520 students responded to the 2012 Healthy FE Survey (12 months after the Big College Health Check). Representation was from Goschen , Kings Road and Learning Warehouse. Results for each section are shown as totals and where appropriate broken down by site and faculty. Results enable comparisons with 2011 data. A commentary is to the right of each data set with actions to reinforce current activity or address concerns alongside.

Slight overall drop in exercise compared to 2011. Health students

make up 60% of those who never take exercise. 20% of

Engineering & ICT students never take exercise.

Overall one third of students are not

aware or would like to know more

about the activities on offer. The

response rate and nature of WBL day

release may have an impact on this

figure. The Faculty of Health cohorts at

Kings Road and Goschen are least

aware or involved in activities,

reflecting their levels of inactivity

above.

ACTION: 1. Work with FoH to raise

awareness and participation in

regularly. The second most frequent

consuming cohort is BLI at Kings Road.

The number of students drinking daily

or twice a week has fallen 10%

compared to 2011.

ACTION: Continue with Drug and

Alcohol workshops. Encourage take

BLI and LWH.

The proportion of students who have

never smoked has gone up from 46%

to 52%. Of those who do smoke there

has been a rise (4%) in the number

who smoke daily.

ACTION: LWH students to be targeted

for smoking awareness. Health and

Construction students to receive

support and smoking health messages

to reduce smoking activity. Support

with statements from our own

students. Quit smoking sessions

planned.

100% of LWH students smoke this has

risen in the last year from 70%. Health

students are the most significant group

of smokers at both Kings Road and

Goschen (42 and 51% respectively).

37% of Construction students smoke.

Frequency of illegal drug taking is on a

par with 2011. Those who never take

drugs has risen by 12%.

ACTION: Continue with Drug and

Alcohol workshops, particularly at

LWH where this has has a positive

effect.

LWH has the highest recorded level of

drug taking. This has dropped 7%

since 2011. Overall drug taking stands

at 8% for the Kings Road and Goschen

sites lower than in 2011.

There has been a 14% increase in

awareness of sexual health services

since 2011.

Further breakdown shows 75% of LWH

aware of where they can get support.

At KR and GC this is approx 50%

ACTION: Raise awareness of

counselling and Student Liaison

GC.

At LWH 100% know where to obtain

free contraceptives, at KR and GC this

is approx 50%. This is an increase

since 2011.
