Young dancers brought toys to life

YOUNG dancers from Haywood Academywere invited to perform in the annualStoke School Sport Partnerships DanceExtravaganza staged at Hanley’s VictoriaHall at the end of March.

The event included primary schools, secondary schools, academies andcolleges from across Stoke-on-Trent who were asked to demonstrate their

interpretation of ‘A Day In The Life Of…’stories through the medium of dance andmovement.

Our piece explored the theme of toysand demonstrated what we thought toyswould do if they could come to life.

The students represented the schoolreally well, closing the show as the finalperformance.

YEAR 9 student Nicole Winley won a competition organised by the IntuPotteries shopping centre to design anddecorate a life-sized baby elephant.

The design was called mirror, with thearea above the central line representing ahealthy city and environment, whilereflected below were damaged buildingsand decay, showing what could happen ifwe fail to look after our planet.

Helped by her friends – including LydiaClowes and Rebecca Pennell – Nicole hadto draw her winning design onto a 3-Dmodel and paint it.

The parade took place from Monday 10 March to Sunday 6 April, with 18elephants decorated by celebrities ondisplay in the shopping centre, alongsideNicole’s design.

More than 500,000 visitors saw theexhibition which aimed to raise funds and awareness for the Asian elephantfoundation. Nicole’s elephant will also be going to London for a winners’photoshoot.

A little peer pressure?

HAYWOOD Academy catering staff hosted their annual Fairtrade lunch on Wednesday 5 March supported by students from the Fairtradecommittee. Customers who enjoyedtucking-in to some of the Fairtradegoodies included City CouncillorsJoy Garner and Peter Haywood, together with Ann Worthington, Chair of Fairtrade Action inStoke-on-Trent.

HAYWOOD Academy students had an opportunity tomeet Derbyshire peer Lord Robert Methuen andlearn about life in the House of Lords when hevisited the school in February.

Lord Methuen met with Year 10 and 11 students to talk about the work of the House of Lords. He also answered questions about aspects of theparliamentary process and day-to-day life atWestminster.

Lord Methuen was very impressed by the interestshown by our students with many probing questionsbeing asked.

The visit was arranged through the Lord Speaker’sPeers In Schools programme, which aims toencourage students to engage more with thepolitical and parliamentary process.

FORTY Year 7 girls visited Lichfield’sGarrick Theatre to listen to CathyCassidy, author of The Chocolate BoxCollection, discussing her inspirationsand her career in writing.

Cathy, pictured, is a writerof young adult fiction whohas penned 20 books.

She has also beenthe agony aunt forteen girl magazineShout and shecurrently has a seriesof three books foryounger readers featuringa character called DaizyStar.

The trip, in February, was veryinformative and gave the students anopportunity to hear about Cathy’sexciting career and what led her tobecome a writer.

Cathy also talked to the girls aboutthe inspiration for her character

creations and quizzed them aboutwhat character they were most like in The Chocolate Box collection.

At the end of the talk students weregiven the chance to ask Cathy

questions about her life and her books.

The girls were verykeen to find out whoCathy bases hercharacters on andwhether she had anyplans to write more

books.At the end of the

discussion the girls wereinvited to a book-signing

session at which they could purchasea selection of Cathy’s books and havethem autographed by the author.

YEAR 9 STUDENT Conor Lawton is a bit of a superstar when it

comes to sport.Despite his physical disabilities –

he was born with cerebral palsy(CP) – Conor, aged 14, has alwaysbeen fully involved in sport and hasdeveloped a particular passion forfootball.

He has also competed at regional level in disabilitytabletennis, wheelchair basketballand disability football.

Conor was involved with Inspiredisability sport where he was ableto take part in a range of sports.Following this he was madeSporting Ambassador for Inspire. In

addition he was asked to join amainstream tabletennis club at St Peter’s High School, Penkhull.

Following Conor’s progress intabletennis, he was invited toattend a disability regionalcompetition where he camesecond in the novice section –playing against England nationaldisability players.

At a charity event wherewheelchair basketball was beingshowcased, Conor was asked tojoin and train with Stoke Spitfiresand he has now played for theteam for two years.

Conor’s obvious ability was soon recognised and he was putforward for regional trials. However,

he underwent major surgery on hisright arm in August last year so hasdecided to wait until he has fullyrecovered before he attends thetrials again.

Conor has been identified as having excellent hand–eye co-ordination and is a mean shooter!

He has also played football from a very early age, joiningmainstream football with Port ValeCommunity at Dimensions.

He then discovered disabilityfootball run by Cerebral PalsySport, playing for CP team AstonVilla Marvels and training at AstonVilla Academy on a weekly basis.

Conor was tracked by the FARegional Talent Scout for DisabilityFootball and at age 10 was askedto trial for Staffordshire FA PlayerDevelopment Centre at Countylevel, based at Stoke City FC.

He now trains there every Fridaynight and is currently in his fourthseason.

Last season he was asked tojoin the West Midland CerebralPalsy Centre of Excellence. This isa regional CP squad based inCoventry and Conor plays for theunder-16 squad. The Centre ofExcellence means that Conor plays

in a league all over the countryagainst other regional teams.

Conor has played at the FA’sNational Football Centre – StGeorge’s Park at Burton-upon-Trent – on a number of occasions, both with the Centre of Excellence(CoE) and The Player DevelopmentCentre (PDC). His most recentventure was at St George’s wherehe was top scorer for his team, netting four goals. The next stepfrom the CoE is to join the EnglandDevelopment Squad, which someof his older team mates haverecently done.

Conor’s ambition is to play CP football for GB at the 2020Paralympics in Tokyo – somethingeveryone agrees is entirely possible.

Mr Rutter, Head of Boys PE atHaywood Academy, said: “Conor isa real inspiration to anyone whotakes part in sport and is proof thatthere are no barriers to beinginvolved in sport at the higheststandard.

“He is an incredibly motivatedand determined sportsman andeverybody at Haywood Academywishes him the very best in hisquest to represent Team GB in the 2020 Paralympics.”
