The NetherlandsDue to the country’s geographic location, the Netherlands has become known as the ’Gatewayto Europe’. The Dutch are famous for being a na-tion of traders who are open to change and pro-gressive in their economic as well as politicalpolicies. The Dutch way of doing business inter-nationally has been known for many centuries.

Throughout the years the Netherlands has builtup an outstanding academic record in manyfields, such as economics, business, agricultureand engineering. It was the first non-English-speaking country in Europe to introduce highereducation programmes taught entirely in English. This progressiveness is one of the reasons whythe country has become a popular destinationfor international students. Approximately 50,000international students are currently studying inone of the 1,485 international study programmesat Dutch higher education institutes.

The Netherlands is one of the most densely po-pulated countries in the world. Using the latesttechnologies and making optimum use of theavailable means, the Netherlands is also one ofthe largest exporters of agricultural products in the world. In particular in the fields of dairy and meat production, floriculture, bulb growing, nursery stock and glasshouse horticulture, the Netherlands takes a large share of theworld’s trade. This success in agricultural tradeis not only the result of highly effective produc-tion methods, but also of sound management, marketing and logistics.

ElleElle Janssen (22) from the Netherlands can’t deny that shewas a little scared of getting homesick, but her traineeshipat De Ruiter Seeds in Guatemala turned out to be fantas-tic. Elle studies Horticulture & Business Management andspecialises on Research & Development. A job in which she can do research about the quality of vegetable seeds and the breeding thereof, preferably notbehind a desk but out in the field (quite literally) – that iswhat Elle dreams of. Her traineeship was a perfect fit.

SanSan Deul Kim (22) knew for a long time already that she wan-ted to do something creative with flowers. That’s why shecame to study Floral Design & Business Management. Hertraineeship took place at an exclusive flower shop in Leiden.San was very pleased with her traineeship company. “The shop where I did my traineeship specialises on top-of-the-line floral designs. They have several regular customerslike a museum, a college and a hotel. But they also have alot of individual clients, especially brides.”

Going DutchShe is especially grateful for the excellent supervision shereceived. “My boss was very charismatic and in the begin-ning I was a little intimidated. But after a while I realised how funny and flexible he was and I ended up learning a lot from him.”

“My bouquets were different but they sold well with the Dutch customer. ”

Floral Design & Business Management Traineeship in the Netherlands

San did feel the cultural differences from time to time. “It isdifficult to feel at home in an industry if you can’t speak thelanguage fluently. Towards the end it got a little easier to understand each other, though, and the cultural differencesbecame interesting instead of frustrating.”

A unique contributionWhat was the best thing about San’s traineeship? “The styleof my hand-tied bouquets was just a little different from myDutch colleagues but they got a lot of praise and sold wellwith the customers.”San has several ideas about what she would like to do lateron. “My dream job is to be the manager of a floral designdepartment in a big hotel. But I can also imagine being a flo-ral design lecturer or to run an exclusive floral design shop, like the one where I just did my traineeship.”

Wesley van den Berg (20) from the Netherlands studiesHorticulture & Business Management and is interested inthe garden centre industry, retail business and marketing. Therefore, he did his traineeship abroad at a garden cen-tre in Vancouver, Canada. Wesley’s assignment was to write an advisory report, comparing Dutch and Canadian garden centres and des-cribing the differences. “Many Canadian garden centresare ten to fifteen years behind Dutch garden centres. Thiswas also the reason why it was a challenge to stir upthings thoroughly.”

A success in every respectThe traineeship did not only improve his knowledge of gar-den centres. Wesley spoke English all the time, so he im-

proved his language skills considerably. “I also learned alot about cultural differences between the Netherlands andCanada, which was a great experience.”This is but one of the things that went well. “Giving adviceand changing and optimising the garden centre workedvery well and the employees accepted the changes quitereadily. It was also good to hear that customers thoughtthe garden centre looked much nicer and that they retur-ned to make more purchases. The garden centre is doingquite well with an 18% increase of turnover on last year!”Wesley is not the only one to look back with satisfaction onhis traineeship. “The employees were very sad to see me leave. Some of them even wiped away a tear… I thinkit is fair to say that I considerably changed their way ofthinking and that is something I am proud of.”

Even when she was still a student, Tekla Wannas wanted tostart her own company. Flowers are her passion. In 2009the 26-year old from Finland graduated in Floral Design &Business Management. “HAS Den Bosch offers floral de-sign at a very high level, and in combination with businessmanagement. You will not find this kind of combinationanywhere else and the chance to learn about both subjectsat the same time was too good to miss.”

Promoting Dutch productsDuring her studies Tekla discovered her interest for the Russian market. “I now work as an advertisement photo-grapher and writer for a magazine that promotes Dutch flowers on the Russian market. I design innovative, creativeflower arrangements and preserve them in a photograph. The photos are then printed in the magazine, together withthe article that I wrote. It’s very cool!” Tekla’s own companyis called TeklaW. She has built quite an international net-

work for herself and she knows how to use it. “A concreteexample of what I do in terms of promotion? I promoteDutch flowers and plants that have been shipped to Fin-land by sea. This process involves several important com-panies, such as the Dutch Flower Group, the FlowerCouncil, KP Holland and Wageningen University.”

Going internationalTekla’s idea of the future? “I want to continue with my com-pany and hopefully grow as an entrepreneur.” She plans togo back to Finland eventually but for now she wants to gointernational. “Every product as well as every market has itsown character. It is, therefore, very important to promote theproducts in a culturally sensitive way. For that you need a lotof imagination and when it works, it really gives you a kick!”
