Wake up to the power of HART

Benefits• Simple, cost-effective, easy to use and

maintain• Faster commissioning and simplified

maintenance• Real-time diagnostics enable problem

detection in seconds• Benefits multiply by integration with

plant control, safety and asset management systems

Power of HARTTogether with Endress+Hauser you can exploit the full power of HART. Not only do we offer a unique range of HART products, we also ensure that our devices are fully integrated into third-party systems:• Comprehensive range of measuring

instruments• Advanced diagnostic and intelligent

multivariable devices• FieldCare Plant Asset Management• Cost-effective solutions for integration in

plant systems• Worldwide service and support

With Endress+Hauser as your partner, you can gain the benefits of modern HART device management.

HART TechnologyThe great majority of measuring devices sold over the last decade are equipped with the HART communication interface.

As a result, HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transmitter) is now a global industrial standard with an installed base of over 14 million devices.

HART is a smart technology, i.e. it supports simultaneous communication over two channels on the same wire including power supply for the devices:• An analog 4-0 mA signal ensures the

fastest possible data transfer of control signal

• HART digital signals provide for read/write access to all device data

Not just ParametrizationIn many installations, the HART signal is simply not used. In others it is used for parametrization only. With the appropriate tools, however, HART puts continuous device monitoring, real-time device diagnostics and multi-variable process information within your grasp – not just for new, but also for existing installations.

Device DescriptionsHART uses so-called device descriptions (DDs) to describe the parameter set carried by the device to the HART master. Device configuration tools use either DD or FDT technology, both based on the original HART DDs.

Electronic Device DescriptionElectronic Device Descriptions (EDDs) are the successors of DDs and will be used in:• Asset Management Solution (AMS)• Process Device Manager (PDM)• 75 Field Communicator• Other DD supported applications

Endress+Hauser provides EDDs for all their devices. It supports their integration in Emerson AMS and Siemens PDM applications.

Field Device ToolField Device Tool provides protocol-independent operation of digital field devices. It maps all device

functions, including advanced diagnostics such as time-of-flight envelope curves.

The information is contained in a Device Type Manager (DTM), a software module that runs in a FDT frame application, e.g.:• FieldCare• PACTware• ABB Composer, Control Builder,

Fieldbus builder etc.• Invensys I/A Series• Other FDT frame applications

Endress+Hauser fully supports the FDT technology and offers DTMs for all Endress+Hauser HART devices.

HART protocol

HART CommandsHART is a master-slave protocol for point-to-point and multidrop communication. It determines how data are to be presented and transferred between master and slave.

Three command classes are defined:• Universal commands offer a basic set of

functions and are supported by all HART instruments

• Common practice commands offer functions which are optional, but which are supported by many HART instruments

• Manufacturer-specific commands are for proprietary functions not covered by the HART specification, e.g. linearization, advanced diagnosis functions, etc.

Basic Parameter SetThanks to the common practice commands, all HART devices offer a basic parameter set that ensures interchangeability and fulfils the requirements for process control and asset management.

The parameters include:• Device identification

Device tag, supplier, device type and revision, device serial number

• Calibration data Upper and lower range values, upper and lower sensor limits, process value damping, last calibration date

• Process variables Primary variable plus secondary measurements and multi-variable parameters

HART - device management solutions

HART for uniformity HART IntegrationHART devices are integrated into a control system via the 4...0 mA analog signal. The HART signal itself is seldom used for process control: its primary use is for parametrization and diagnosis. This may be done on a point-to-point basis, or centrally from the control room.

When HART is used for Plant Asset Management, information must be gathered at regular intervals from the field device. This entails tapping the HART signal on the 4...0 mA line. Depending upon the system architecture involved, a number of solutions exist.

System Solutions• Conventional 4...0 mA control

– Point-to-point parametrization and diagnosis via 75 Field Communicator or FieldCare

– Point-to-point via multiplexer and central application

• HART compatible controller– Centralized management through

system tools, e.g. Delta V & AMS• Fieldbus-based control system

– Parallel management via Remote I/O with e.g. FieldCare

– Integrated system management via Remote I/O, e.g. with ABB Composer

• Remote access through Fieldgate FXA50– Parametrization, monitoring and

diagnosis via multidrop or multiplexer
