Sandwell may soon see Faith schools mushrooming in the borough

It seems different religious groups are preparing and expected to apply for state funding – this is the dilemma of secular campaigners.

The tax payer will have to put up the bill. The state pays 85% of Capital costs and the government says it is considering raising this to 90%. It also pays teachers.

In a study, Ofsted inspected 51 fee paying faith schools, including those teaching Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist and Hindu children to evaluate how well they prepare children for “modern Britain”

In the past, Members of the Associations of Teachers and Lecturers in a Union motion debate, said the government policy of increasing the numbers of faith schools would “hinder instigation, foster religious divisions and provide ground for religions and ethnic conflicts.

No test from the heart…

From 23 January the driving theory test will no longer use pre-published questions in a move to stop candidates from learning answers by heart.

Until now all the questions used in the driving theory test have been published. These changes will mean that learner drivers and riders gain a better understanding of driving theory because they can no longer rely on simply learning which options are correct for individual questions.

The familiar Theory Test books and software still offer revision questions. They now also have exercises so learners can practice applying their knowledge on each topic to case studies. There are also new sections of revision support for motorcyclists and a free e-book for car drivers.

Editor’s DeskWe are in 2012 and like

every year we are thinking about dieting, losing weight, paying off debt and New Year resolutions. But we all know how many times an individual succeeds is hard to tell as we all succumb to the pressures of life and slip up.

Unlike previous years, we have to make a strong commitment to eat sensibly, keep to a regular exercise routine and become fitter. The

government has been asked yet again to change the limits for sensible drinking, but we as individuals should take the responsibility and decrease the incidence of alcohol related liver disease and attendances at the hospital casualties being drunk.

Unemployment amongst young people is at its highest (1,016,000). The government and industries should work hard towards creating job opportunity, apprenticeship to

prevent this generation from feeling let down.

So let us all buck the trend of doom and gloom and work our way through the year 2012 and give ourselves and the country a chance to prosper once again.

What Resolution!So here we are a whole month and

a bit into 2012..... So did I make any new resolutions!!!!!! Well let’s call them resolutions because frankly speaking I think I make them every Monday!!!

Well I did, not only to workout but to get truly fit.... As in my mind I think I could run a marathon or do a triathlon before I hit the big 40!!!!..... I do say this with the remote hope it may happen!!!!!

Ok don’t think I’m crazy but my runners are calling to me to actually take them for a good workout, rather than a meandering walk through the

spring meadow..... Ok that’s what I think they’d say.

So after much contemplation I think I really should use that gym membership.... So here is my first step into the real fitness world, I made a pledge to my runners to actually let them experience the joys of exercise.

I will write about my journey into fitness.... First on my list is Zumba. Erm, yes, it sounds like a kind of drink but here on the beautiful west coast it’s the latest exercise craze, it’s a fusion of Latin dance and aerobics, so I will let you know how that goes, along with yoga,

walking , running and maybe even swimming!

The benefits are amazing, the adrenaline rush, the bonus of weight loss if that’s a goal, and the best for me, I find, I have a buzz that lasts all day, which unlike chocolate (and believe me, I love chocolate), the exercise buzz seems to last all day!!!

So, if like me, you truly want to make this year or this Monday truly different lets actually do it.... Stay posted....

Crime cashA donation of over £30,000

worth of money seized from criminals in Wolverhampton has been donated back to local community projects by police.

Money raised from the sale of property under the Proceeds of Crime Act allows officers to recover money and assets from criminals that has been gained by illegal activity which is then invested back into the community.

A total of £31,000 from the fund will assist local projects and initiatives. Eighteen schemes and organisations across Wolverhampton will benefit from the proceeds.

Among the schemes set to benefit from a successful bid of £8,161 are Pride Penn Fields - to gate alleyways in the area.

The move to make hero marathon charity runner ‘Blind’ Dave Heeley Sandwell’s next honorary freeman is set to be ratified.

Dave, who is 54, will be Sandwell’s 11th honorary freeman. The official ceremony is likely to take place in spring.

Council Leader Councillor Darren Cooper said: “I am sure he will be a great ambassador for the borough. Over the years he has done so much for so many others with his charity runs.”

Dave, from West Bromwich,

Brave officers honouredPC’s Gerard Troy, Nathan Gibbs, Scott Dent

and Leon Grange received Chief Constable’s Commendations for their bravery in dealing with an armed man in Bordesley Green last June.

The officers responded to reports that someone was being chased by an armed group of Asian Men. They came across a group that fitted the description and stopped them to carry out a search.

The men initially complied, but then the one of them took a gun from his waistband. The officers acted with exceptional courage, remaining calm and professional. They forcibly took hold of him and managed to take the gun, which was later found to contain five rounds of live ammunition.

The offender was sentenced to three years, while another man was also arrested on suspicion of possession of an illegal substance.

DCs Craig Hall and Juliet Cook received Chief Constable’s Awards for their work on Operation Haunch - the attempted murder of security guard Kamran Khursheed during Eid celebrations at a funfair at Ward End Park last September.

He suffered a gunshot wound to his back and multiple stab wounds in the assault.

Also honoured was Stetchford-based PC Jonah Line who, on Sunday 13 March, prevented a woman from committing suicide.

The off-duty officer spotted a distressed, drunk woman sat on top of a railway bridge. Concerned for her welfare he stopped his car and made a careful approach.

Having gained her trust, he asked to continue to deal with her and ensure she received appropriate welfare.

Coventry-based police dog handler PC Scott Moulsher received an award for tackling three masked, knife-wielding men, who had broken into a hotel, assaulted a member of staff and attempted to escape.

PC Liam Marshall, from Walsall police station, received his award for dealing with a violent robbery in May, in which a man was kicked and punched and threatened with a knife at his home.

PCs Diana Shaw, Catherine Morgan and Katie Peplow, from Birmingham West & Central, also received Chief Constable’s Awards for tackling armed robbers in Handsworth last January.

Be “Special” to your communityA leading Asian

broadcaster and journalist was the first Asian Special Constable to join Birmingham City Police.

After three decades of journalism, Suresh Joshi is now Director General of the Asian Guild , a non- profit organisation which celebrates the economic and cultural

contributions made by Asians to UK life.

Suresh joined Birmingham City Police almost a decade before the formation of WMP when Derek Capper was Chief Constable. He wanted to become a forensic photographer so joined the Birmingham School of Photography, where his tutor suggested he became a special.

He worked from King’s Heath on the F Division, with the collar number 13, and quickly made a name for him self as he spoke various

languages so was often called to other divisions to act as an interpreter. He was also on duty in 1974 when the IRA bombed the Mulberry Bush and the Tavern in the town pubs central Birmingham.

Suresh now cites his nine years as a special as one of the highlights of his life: “The bobbies I worked with were icons of their time and I have nothing but admiration for them and the greatest respect for the whole British Constabulary.

“We were really appreciated by the host community at the time which helped to make my time there such an excellent experience – and I am sure made me a better human being as well. It was interesting getting to grips with new technology as it was introduced. I got to drive a panda car and we all had fun with the walkie talkies. We had to use an old typewriter and we used to joke that if the job didn’t kill you, the typewriter would!”

Meditation mayprevent psychiatric disorders

According to a recent study by Judson Brewer of Yale University of USA, experienced meditators may be able switch off areas of the brain associated with day dreaming, anxiety and certain psychiatric disorders such as Schizophrenia and autism.

Tests have shown that meditation helps in a variety

of health problems.Brewer said “meditation’s

ability to help people stay in the moment has been part of philosophical and contemplative practices for thousands of years.”

The researchers performed functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans on experienced and beginners meditators using 3 different

meditation techniques.The results were very

interesting which showed decreased activity in the default mode network in experienced meditators. This neutral network has been associated with anxiety based illnesses, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders and plaque formation in Alzheimers Disease.

Harborne residents urged to meet local officers at new meetings

RESIDENTS across Harborne are being urged to have their say on policing at a range of new ‘meet and greet’ sessions across the ward.

The new drop in sessions will take place in local supermarkets, churches and community centres. They will give local people the opportunity to discuss any concerns about crime or anti-social behaviour or receive crime prevention advice. Meetings have been arranged up until the end of July and the full list of dates can be

accessed on the Birmingham South police website.

The dates for February are: 21 February 2012, 5:00pm - 8:00pm, Marks and Spencer, 42 High Street. 26 February 2012, 10:00am noon, St. Mary’s Church, Vivian Road. 28 February 2012, 11:00am - 2:00pm, Harborne Pool Leisure Centre, Lordswood Road.

Police community support officer Marc Pearson, who will be attending the meet and greets, said: “It is vital we listen to our communities and what they have to say about

policing in their local area. We hope that these meetings will give residents another opportunity to do so.

“We have tried to spread the sessions across the ward at different locations and times. This will give any Harborne resident the opportunity to see their local officers at a time and place which suits them.”

Birmingham’s NIA and ICC have teamed up to launch a fitness challenge for the region’s professionals. Taking place on 22 February 2012, the Birmingham Bolt will see local businesses compete in a series of sporting challenges to get fit and help raise money for a great cause.

Businesses from across the West Midlands are invited to enter teams of 10 people and compete in a series of events; including jumping, sprinting, long distance running, throwing and relays on NIA’s professional track, which has been used by some of the world’s best athletes; from the Aviva Grand Prix Athletics to the trampoline and Tumbling World Championships.

“I will be taking part, along with the NEC Group CEO, Paul Thandi, and we’re both looking forward to meeting everyone taking part” said Birmingham Bolt.

It costs £250 to enter a team of 10 into the Birmingham Bolt and the money will go towards the Birmingham Civic Society’s Next Generation Awards, which encourages 11-14 year olds.

Redcard for Northfield youngsters...

POLICE in south Birmingham are urging local youngsters to show boredom the red card and join them for some top quality football coaching.

In partnership with the Kickz football project, the football coaching scheme is looking set to expand in the Northfield constituency and officers want to see more local youngsters get involved.

Attendees to the project currently receive professional football coaching and training from Kickz staff and coaches from Birmingham City football club.

They also have the opportunity to play in various football competitions, which last year saw them visit Old Trafford (Manchester United) and next month will see them play at the Molineux (Wolverhampton Wanderers).

Sessions are free to attend and are open to anyone between the ages of 10-17. There are three sessions a week: On Monday and Friday evenings the coaching takes place between 7pm and 9pm at Turves Green Focus Centre (Rear of Turves Green Girls School). The other session runs on a Tuesday evening between 5.30pm and 7.30pm at Colmers Astro Turf, Birmingham Great Park.

An FA statement read: “The Football Association can confirm that Fabio Capello has today resigned as England manager.”

The Italian, 65, publicly challenged the FA’s decision to strip John Terry of the captaincy.

The FA’s statement continued: “The discussions focused on the FA Board’s decision to remove the England team captaincy from John Terry, and Fabio Capello’s response through an Italian broadcast interview.

“In a meeting for over an hour, Fabio’s resignation was accepted and he will leave the post of England manager with immediate effect.”

Bernstein said: “I would like to stress that during the meeting and throughout his time as England manager, Fabio has conducted himself in an extremely professional manner.

Analysis“We have accepted Fabio’s resignation,

agreeing this is the right decision. We would like to thank Fabio for his work with the England team and wish him every success in the future.”

It was the firstt meeting Capello had with the FA since their decision to remove the

armband from Terry pending the outcome of his court case in July.

Terry, 31, denies a charge of allegedly racially abusing QPR’s Anton Ferdinand.

On Sunday, Capello told Italy’s state broadcaster RAI he did not believe someone should be punished by sporting authorities before a court had reached a verdict.

“I thought it was right that Terry should keep the captain’s armband,” said Capello, whose first game in charge was on 6 February 2008, against Switzerland.

“I have spoken to the FA chairman and I have said that in my opinion one cannot be punished until it is official and the court

- a non-sport court, a civil court - had made a decision to decide if John Terry has done what he is accused of.”

FA head of elite development Gareth Southgate suggested Under-21 head coach Stuart Pearce will be in charge for England’s friendly against the Netherlands at Wembley on 29 February.

“Stuart Pearce is in the building and with the under-21s,” said the former England defender.

“But you have to think for the summer - can you get the person you want for the longer term? Because the leading candidates are with clubs at the minute.

“Harry Redknapp is one of leading candidates but Tottenham will have something to say about that and Daniel Levy is not going to want Harry to leave without a fight, so there’s an awful lot to work out in the next few weeks.”
