In that year the Corporationpurchased the site, which was extended by later purchasesof Harlow Moor in 1898 and 1926, and Collins Field in 1901,to form the area of the present Gardens. Subsequentembellishments included the building of the Sun Pavilionand the Sun Colonnade in the 1930s. The Gardens cover 17 acres along with the Pinewoods. Bogs Field contains agreater number of mineral springs than any other knownplace 36 of Harrogates 88 mineral wells are found within the Gardens of which no two are alike.

THE PINEWOODSThe Pinewoods is a semi-natural woodland of approximately1 square kilometre in size (76 acres). The original Scots Pines(Pinus sylvestris), from where the Pinewoods takes its name, were planted in 1796 as part of the Kings Plantation and originally covered some 6 acres in area. The Pines arestill in evidence today although it is unlikely that any of theoriginals exist. The land has since developed, both naturallyand through the assistance of planting schemes, into asemi-natural woodland of mixed native, deciduous andevergreen species.

THE PINEWOODS CONSERVATION GROUPThis is a charitable group working in partnership withHarrogate Borough Council to protect, preserve and developthe woods.
