Progress Association President’s Report... The last month of May has seen cooler weather arrive and as consequence a reduction of people around
town. Also, all reports are that fishing success has been limited and reminders of the ban on Whiting
fishing for the Month for those who frequent the Banks.
Great to see the girls arranging the Longest Afternoon Tea and although I could not attend, I saw the
wonderful spread that was provided. It was unfortunate that the attendance was small as a lot of people
are not in town at the moment. However, over $200 was raised for cancer and that is great.
Great news that we had the grant for the defibrillator approved and it won’t be long and it will be here.
The favoured place for the defibrillator to be placed is outside the shop but the final decision is yet to be
made. This will be discussed at the June meeting. If anyone has an opinion on the location on this
important piece of equipment please let a committee member know.
The Council continues to work on various projects and we appreciate their continued assistance to help us
tidy up the town. Several shack owners have been active in helping tidy up the road side so thanks for
that.
We have applied for a grant for a ride on mower so we are hopeful in getting that to help keep the town
tidy in comfort.
We are still waiting for a decision on the grant for the toilet at the boat ramp.
Enjoy the cool weather.
Geoff Hampel, HWBPA President

At the hall...
Meet the Committee ...
Ferd and Judi Machadinho, have been coming to the Bay for over 30 years and purchased a home here 12 years ago. They have been permanent resi-dents for the last four years and have become involved with the Progress Association in that time. Judi is currently the Treasurer and Ferd does volunteer work on a regular basis. Ferd came to Australia in 1969 from Portugal, and has mostly worked in the building reinforcing industry except for
the four years the family spent in the Pilbara mining town of Goldsworthy WA in the late 70’s early 80’s. Judi has worked in hospitality (commercial cook), and retail and had two successful small businesses before returning to school (at the age of 45) to master the basic use of a computer!! Here she also studied accounting and went on to secure a position with Toro Australia and further studied and worked in International Finance and Trade Documentation for over 12 years.
The couple have been married for 45 years and have two adult children and one grandson.
They would like to see more use of the Community Centre, the wonderful facility that this town has worked so hard for just does not seem to get the use that it should. Judi would like to see more daytime activities at the centre for the community to enjoy. She would welcome any ideas that anyone has to improve the ‘Community Spirit’.

An Anzac Day Service was held at the Bublacowie Military Museum which is set in the grounds of the former Bublacowie School, Bublacowie Rd, Yorketown. The service was attended by many locals including several Hardwicke Bay residents. Visitors then enjoyed looking through the exhibits and were welcome to purchase a lamb roast lunch in the dining room followed by a dessert. The museum is well worth visiting if you are interested in military history, opening times are shown below. The exhibits include all sorts of memorabilia; medals, uniforms, vehicles and much much more.
Hardwicke Bay held a biggest afternoon tea yesterday 23/5/17 to raise money for cancer.
The afternoon was fun with some game playing, raffle’s and chit chat catch up.
We raised $238.00 for cancer.
Jan Larcombe won 1st price
Judi Machadino won 2nd price
Sue Patterson won the lucky number with the price being a $20 shop voucher.

Walk the Yorke…. Pt Turton to Pt Rickaby Distance: 41.6km (10 hours 25 minutes)
Heading towards the north from Point Turton, this section of the Walk The
Yorke trail can be broken down into 5 smaller trails:
Point Turton to Hardwicke Bay Shelter 14.1km (3 hours 32 mins)
Hardwicke Bay Shelter to Pt Minlacowie 7.4km (1 hour 51 mins)
Pt Minlacowie to Parsons Beach 10.2km (2 hours 33 mins)
Parsons Beach to Bluff Beach 2km (30 minutes)
Bluff Beach to Pt Rickaby Jetty 7.9km (1 hour 59 mina)
In the first part of this section a beach walk takes walkers along firm beaches
with rock outcrops, while cyclist following the road network to Hardwicke
Bay. Just north of Point Turton, walkers will come across Flaherty’s Beach
which is the base for a popular annual event. The Flaherty’s Beach Golf Classic
is held every summer and played on the sand, with many locals and visitors
taking part. It’s worth a look, and cyclists can head towards the coast before
re-joining the trail.
Heading further north, Hardwicke Bay is a fantastic small coastal town, and
the tractors lined up on the beach are always a sight to behold. With no

concrete boat ramp here, the best option is to use a tractor to launch your boat and the colourful line-up of tractors is a Hardwicke
Bay tradition. The trail continues north, and varies between a shared trail, beach walk and bike track; before splitting at Parsons
Beach with walkers following the coastline, and cyclists along the roads.
Bluff Beach retains some important Yorke Peninsula maritime history, with boat hoists that were used by local fishermen to hoist
their boat out of the water in bad weather. There are 2 boat hoists remaining following a storm in 1954, but there were 6 erected
back in 1925.
From Barkers Rocks, keep heading north along the shared walking/cycling trail until you reach Port Rickaby.
Port Rickaby’s Jetty was built in 1879, with a length of 121.9m (400 feet) and a low-water depth of 3.3m; this meant that cargo
could be loaded directly onto the international sailing ships, instead of being ferried by ketches.
Something funny…
Familiar Faces Vacationing in Hawaii, two priests decide to wear casual clothes so they won’t be identified as clergy. They buy Hawaiian shirts and sandals, and soon hit the beach. They notice a gorgeous blonde in a tiny bikini. “Good afternoon, Fathers,” she says as she strolls by.
The men are stunned. How does she know they’re clergy? Later they buy even wilder attire: surfer shorts, tie-dyed T-shirts, and dark glasses. The next day, they return to the beach. The same fabulous blonde, now wearing a string bikini, passes by, nods politely at them, and says, “Good morning, Fathers.”
“Just a minute, young lady,” says one of the priests. “We are priests and proud of it, but how in the world did you know?”
“Don’t you recognize me? I’m Sister Kathryn from the convent.”
