    1 Application and scope

    1.1 APPLICATIONHardieFlexSheetismanufacturedinNewZealandbyJamesHardiefromfibrecementwhichisacompositionofPortlandcement,groundsand,cellulosefibreandwater.HardieFlexSheetisapaneledlightweightwallcladdingsolutionforresidentialandlightcommercialbuildings.

    HardieFlexSheetisidealformanygeneralbuildingpurposessuchaswallcladding,widesoffits,porchesandgableendsetc.

    HardieFlexSheetisanaturalunsandedsheetandissuitableforapaintfinish.Avarietyofjointingmethodscanbeusedtoachievethedesiredlook.

    1.2 SCOPEThescopeofthisspecificationisfortheuseofHardieFlexSheetlimitedtobuildingswhichfallwithinthescopelimitationsofNewZealandBuildingCode(NZBC)AcceptableSolutionE2/AS1paragraph1.1.ThismanualcoverstheuseofHardieFlexSheetforeitherconstructionmethodsi.e.directfixedorcavity,usedinexternalwallsoftimberframedbuildings.PleaserefertoE2/AS1forfurtherinformationregardingtheselectionofconstructionmethodsforcladdings.

    Thisdocumentisintendedforusebyarchitects,designersandspecifierswhomaybeinvolvedwiththespecificationofHardieFlexSheet.

    2 Design

    2.1 COMPLIANCEHardieFlexSheetcomplieswithsection9.7.2ofE2/AS1.InformationcontainedinthisdocumentisalignedwiththerequirementsofNZBCAcceptableSolutionE2/AS1.

    2.2 RESPONSIBILITYThespecifierorotherpartyresponsiblefortheprojectmustrunthroughariskmatrixanalysistodeterminewhichconstructionmethodistobeused.Thedesignermustalsoensurethatthefigurespublishedinthisspecificationareappropriatefortheintendedapplicationandthatadditionaldetailingisperformedforspecificdesignoranyareasthatfalloutsidethescopeofthisspecification.ThedesignersshouldensurethattheintentoftheirdesignmeetstherequirementsoftheNZBC.

    Alldimensionsshownareinmillimetersunlessnotedotherwise.AllNewZealandStandardsreferenceinthismanualarecurrenteditionandmustbecompliedwith.

    JamesHardieconductsstringentqualitycheckstoensurethatanyproductmanufacturedfallswithinourqualityspectrum.Itistheresponsibilityofthebuildertoensurethattheproductmeetsaestheticrequirementsbeforeinstallation.JamesHardiewillnotberesponsibleforrectifyingobviousaestheticsurfacevariationsfollowinginstallation.

    2.3 SITE AND FOUNDATIONThesiteonwhichthebuildingissituatedmustcomplywithNZBCAcceptableSolutionE1/AS1SurfaceWater.FoundationsdesignmustcomplywiththerequirementsofNZS3604TimberFramedBuildingsorbeasperspecificengineeringdesign.ThegradeofadjacentfinishedgroundmustslopeawayfromthebuildingtoavoidanypossibilityofwateraccumulationinaccordancewithNZBCrequirements.

    2.4 GROUND CLEARANCESTheclearancebetweenthebottomedgeofcladdingandpaved/unpavedgroundmustcomplywithsection9.1.3ofE2/AS1.Thefinishedfloorlevelmustalsocomplywiththeserequirements.Theseclearancesmustbemaintainedthroughoutthelifeofthebuilding.

    HardieFlexSheetsmustoverhangthebottomplateonaconcreteslabbyaminimumof50mmasrequiredbyNZS3604.

    HardieFlexSheetsmusthaveaminimumclearanceof100mmfrompavedgroundand175mmfromunpavedground.

    Ontheroofsanddeckstheminimumclearancemustbe50mm.

    Donotinstallexternalcladdingsuchthatitmayremainincontactwithwaterorground.RefertoFigures3and22.

    2.5 MOISTURE MANAGEMENTItistheresponsibilityofthespecifiertoidentifymoisturerelatedrisksassociatedwithanyparticularbuildingdesign.Wallconstructiondesignmusteffectivelymanagemoisture,consideringboththeinteriorandexteriorenvironmentsofthebuilding,particularlyinbuildingsthathaveahigherriskofwinddrivenrainpenetrationorthatareartificiallyheatedorcooled.

    WallsshallincludethoseprovisionsasrequiredbytheNZBCAcceptableSolutionE2/AS1ExternalMoisture.Inadditionallwallopenings,penetrations,junctions,connections,windowsills,headsandjambsmustincorporateappropriateflashingsforwaterproofing.Theothermaterials,componentsandinstallationmethodsusedtomanagemoistureinexternalwalls,mustcomplywiththerequirementsofrelevantstandardsandtheNZBC.ForfurtherinformationondesigningforweathertightnessrefertoBRANZLtdandtheDepartmentofBuildingandHousingupdatesonthefollowingwebsitesrespectively,www.branz.co.nzandwww.dbh.govt.nz.

    2.6 STRUCTURETimber-framedbuildingsmustbedesignedinaccordancewithNZS3604(TimberFramedBuildings).Whentheframingisprovidedasperthespecificengineeringdesign,theframingstiffnessmustbeequivalenttoormorethanthestiffnessrequirementsofNZS3604.

    2.7 WIND LOADINGHardieFlexSheetcladdingaresuitableforuseinallNewZealandwindzonesuptoandincludingEHasdefinedinNZS3604.Aspecificdesignisrequiredforallsituationswherethebuildingsfallinaspecificengineeringdesign(SED)windzone.

    2.8 STRUCTURAL BRACINGHardieFlexSheetcanbeusedtoachievestructuralbracingrequiredfortimberframedbuildingsdesignedandconstructedinaccordancewithNZS3604.TheHardieFlexSheetmustbeinstalledasperspecificbracingsystemdetailsthatareavailableseparately.HardieFlexSheetbracingsystemshavebeenindependentlytestedandassessedbyBRANZandaresuitableforbothconstructionmethodsi.e.directfixandcavity.RefertoJamesHardieBracingDesignManualfordetails.

    2.9 FIRE RATED WALLSHardieFlexSheetcladwallsusingdirectfixorcavityconstructionmethodcanachievefireratingsupto60/60/60whenthewallsareconstructedinaccordancewiththisliteratureandincludethefireratedsystemrequirementsasspecifiedinJamesHardieFireandAcousticDesignManual.RefertoFireandAcousticDesignManualforfurtherinformationaboutfireratedsystems.

    2.10 ENERGY EFFICIENCYExternalwallsconstructedusingHardieFlexSheet,bulkinsulation,wheretheareaofglazingis30%orlessofthetotalwallareaandconstructedasperthistechnicalspecificationcomplieswiththerequirementsforwallsinNZBCAcceptableSolutionH1/AS1(NZBCClauseH1EnergyEfficiency),ReplacementTable1.Tomeetthermalinsulationrequirementsfortheconstruction,thebulkinsulationasspecifiedinTable1mustbeused.ThisinsulationmaybesubstitutedwithinsulationshavinghigherR-values.Thethermalinsulationofawallgetsaffectedwhenthedepthofthetimberframingisincreasedordecreased.ThecalculationusedinTable1isbasedonatimberframingsize90x45mmandusinganinternalliningmaterialsuchasJamesHardieVillaboardLiningora10mmplasterboard.

    FramingtolerancesmustcomplywiththerequirementsofNZS3604.Allframingshallbemadeflush.

    4 Preparation4.1 BUILDING UNDERLAY/HOMERAB

    PRECLAD LININGBuildingunderlayorHomeRABPreCladLiningmustbeprovidedaspertherequirementsofNZBCAcceptableSolutionE2/AS1ExternalMoistureandNZS3604.ThebuildingunderlaymustcomplywithTable23ofE2/AS1andAS/NZS4200.1.ThebuildingunderlaymustbefixedinaccordancewithE2/AS1,NZS3604andAS/NZS4200.2PliableBuildingMembranesandUnderlayInstallationstandardandtheunderlaymanufacturersrecommendations.

    Wallswhicharenotlinedontheinsidefacee.g.garagewallsorgableendsmustincludearigidsheathingoranairbarrierbehindthecladdingwhichcomplieswiththerequirementsofNZBCAcceptableSolutionE2/AS1Table23.HomeRABPreCladLiningissuitableforuseintheseapplications.ItmustbeinstalledinaccordancewithJamesHardieRigidAirBarriersInstallationManual.

    4.3 VENT STRIPTheJamesHardieuPVCcavityventstripmustbeinstalledatthebottomofallwallsconstructedusingthedrainedandventilatedcavityconstructionmethod.Itisimportantthattheopeningsintheventstriparekeptclearandunobstructedtoallowfreedrainageandventilationofcavities.JamesHardieuPVCventstriphasanopeningareaof1000mm2/mlength.

    5 Fixing HardieFlex Sheet

    5.1 GENERALHardieFlexSheetsmustbekeptdryandundercoverwhilstinstorageorduringinstallation.FramingmoisturecontentsmustnotexceedthemaximumlimitspecifiedinNZS3602priortosheetinstallation.Everyendeavourmustbemadetokeepframingdryoncesheetfixingcommences.

    Allsheetedgesmustbesealedpriortoinstallation.Thesheetedgesmustalsobesealedaroundwindow/dooropeningsandotherpenetrationse.g.meterboxesetc.

    5.2 FASTENER DURABILITYFastenersmustmeettheminimumdurabilityrequirementsoftheNZBC.NZS3604specifiestherequirementsforfixingmaterialtobeusedinrelationtoexposureconditionsandaresummarisedinTable2.

    7 Finishing

    7.1 PREPARATIONPaintingofHardieFlexSheetsisrequiredinordertomeetthedurabilityrequirementsoftheNZBCandproductwarranties.HardieFlexSheetsmustbedryandfreefromdirtbeforepainting.Coatingmustbecompletedwithin3monthsofsheetinstallation.

    WhenusinguPVCflashings,thelightreflectivevalueofthecolourusedmustbemorethan40%asrequiredunderE2/AS1.Darkcolourscauseexcessivemovementanddeterioratethecladdingperformance.

    7.2 SEALANTS AllsealantsmustmeettherelevantrequirementsoftheNZBC.Applicationanduseofsealantsmustcomplywithmanufacturersinstructions.Checkwithsealantmanufacturerpriortocoatingoversealants.Somesealantmanufacturersdonotrecommendcoatingovertheirproduct.

    7.3 COATING UseonlyqualityexteriorpaintscomplyingwithAS3730.Manufacturersspecificationfortheselectedpaintmustbefollowed.Notethatsomepaintsrequireundercoatbeforeapplyingthefinishcoat.Priortocoating,thesurfaceshouldbeexaminedtoensureitisclean,dryandfreeofanydustorcontaminants.WhenusinguPVCflashings,thelightreflectivevalue(LRV)forthecolourmustnotbelessthan40%.

    PaintswithalowLRVwillabsorbmoresolarheatandcouldcausethecomponentsusedinthewalltoexpandorcontract.Thiscombinedwithglossypaintsandwettimberusedatconstructionstage,couldleadtoincreasedchancesoffastenerreadthroughasiscommonwithanyotherbuildingmaterial.

    Enamelbasedpaintscanbeused,utilisingathree-coatsystem.Refertothepaintmanufacturerfordetailsbeforecommencingthecoatingwork.

    Paintmustnotbeappliedwhenthetemperatureisbelow10C.

    8 Storage and handling

    Product WarrantyOctober 2013JamesHardieNewZealand(JamesHardie)warrantsforaperiodof15yearsfromthedateofpurchasethattheHardieFlexSheet(theProduct),willbefreefromdefectsduetodefectivefactoryworkmanshipormaterialsand,subjecttocompliancewiththeconditionsbelow,willberesistanttocracking,rotting,fireanddamagefromtermiteattackstotheextentsetoutinJamesHardiesrelevantpublishedliteraturecurrentatthetimeofinstallation.JamesHardiewarrantsforaperiodof15yearsfromthedateofpurchasethattheaccessoriessuppliedbyJamesHardiewillbefreefromdefectsduetodefectivefactoryworkmanshipormaterials.

    NothinginthisdocumentshallexcludeormodifyanylegalrightsacustomermayhaveundertheConsumerGuaranteesActorotherwisewhichcannotbeexcludedormodifiedatlaw.

    CONDITIONS OF WARRANTY: Thewarrantyisstrictlysubjecttothefollowingconditions:

    a) JamesHardiewillnotbeliableforbreachofwarrantyunlesstheclaimantprovidesproofofpurchaseandmakesawrittenclaimeitherwithin30daysafterthedefectwouldhavebecomereasonablyapparentor,ifthedefectwasreasonablyapparentpriortoinstallation,thentheclaimmustbemadepriortoinstallation.

    b) Thiswarrantyisnottransferable.

    c) TheProductmustbeinstalledandmaintainedstrictlyinaccordancewiththerelevantJamesHardieliteraturecurrentatthetimeofinstallationandmustbeinstalledinconjunctionwiththecomponentsorproductsspecifiedintheliterature.Further,allotherproducts,includingcoatingandjointingsystems,appliedtoorusedinconjunctionwiththeProductmustbeappliedorinstalledandmaintainedstrictlyinaccordancewiththerelevantmanufacturersinstructionsandgoodtradepractice.

    d) TheprojectmustbedesignedandconstructedinstrictcompliancewithallrelevantprovisionsofthecurrentNewZealandBuildingCode(NZBC),regulationsandstandards.

    e) Theclaimantssoleremedyforbreachofwarrantyis(atJamesHardiesoption)thatJamesHardiewilleithersupplyreplacementproduct,rectifytheaffectedproductorpayforthecostofthereplacementorrectificationoftheaffectedproduct.

    f) JamesHardiewillnotbeliableforanylossesordamages(whetherdirectorindirect)includingpropertydamageorpersonalinjury,consequentialloss,economiclossorlossofprofits,arisingincontractornegligenceorhowsoeverarising.WithoutlimitingtheforegoingJamesHardiewillnotbeliableforanyclaims,damagesordefectsarisingfromorinanywayattributabletopoorworkmanship,poordesignordetailing,settlementorstructuralmovementand/ormovementofmaterialstowhichtheProductisattached,incorrectdesignofthestructure,actsofGodincludingbutnotlimitedtoearthquakes,cyclones,floodsorothersevereweatherconditionsorunusualclimaticconditions,efflorescenceorperformanceofpaint/coatingsappliedtotheProduct,normalwearandtear,growthofmould,mildew,fungi,bacteria,oranyorganismonanyProductsurfaceorProduct(whetherontheexposedorunexposedsurfaces).

    g) Allwarranties,conditions,liabilitiesandobligationsotherthanthosespecifiedinthiswarrantyareexcludedtothefullestextentallowedbylaw.

    h) Ifmeetingaclaimunderthiswarrantyinvolvesre-coatingofProducts,theremaybeslightcolourdifferencesbetweentheoriginalandreplacementProductsduetotheeffectsofweatheringandvariationsinmaterialsovertime.
