lying faced by today’s youth. Their initiative “Judgement Free

Zone” is designed to create a culture of kindness and encouragement – and empower a generation to grow up contributing to a more judgement free planet – a place where everyone feels accepted and like they belong.

To combat recent reports that one in five youth have been bullied and that bullying is the No. 1 concern of parents of school-aged chil-dren, Planet Fitness partners with Boys & Girls Clubs of America and PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, the nation’s leading nonprof-it bullying prevention organization, to introduce “Bullying Prevention 101,” a free-to-download educational resource designed to equip teachers, counselors and other educators with tools to em-power students to prevent bullying and stand up for kindness.

Additionally, together with their franchises,

staff and members, Planet Fitness has contributed more than $5 mil-lion to their nonprofit partners, awarded $275,000 in scholarships to youth who promote inclusion in their communities, and built more than 25 Mini Judgement Free Zone fitness centers in select Boys & Girls Clubs.

A crucial element to the grow-ing popularity of Planet Fitness as a workout cen-ter for Temple Citians is its location.

The gym is in the center of the west San Gabriel Valley, making it easy for Temple City residents to stick with their new year’s resolution to get healthy in 2020.

Planet Fitness is located at in the Camel-lia Square shopping center at 9055 E. Las Tunas Drive, Temple City. There is plenty of parking above and in the underground garage and the facilities are open 24 hours. To join, phone 626-210-3800.

Chamber welcomes renewing members

So, as I’m writing it looks like yet another year and (for me) another de-cade has arrived in what seems like record time.

And I suppose some of us who’ve attended many past rodeos might be a lit-tle cynical or resigned … as in …here we go again. But not me; in fact, as we open a new calendar, I can’t wait to get my hands on that beautiful blank page that shows up every Jan. 1.

Resolve this - a New Year’s resolution that could lead to $20I see the pristine sheet

as a reminder that we can be the authors of our own life story. And what’s cool is the chance we all share the experience.

I love New Year resolu-tions; I write ‘em down. I even go public with ‘em.

So here they are: my Top 10 New Year resolu-tions for 2020:

10. You’re in my dental chair. I say, “Almost done.” Three minutes later I’m still working. You get $20.

9. I’ll write at least one personal note per day … legibly.

8. I’ll stop wondering what property managers and underwriters really wanted to be when they grew up.

7. I’ll forgive my alma mater, the University of Southern California … because they know not what they do.

6. I’ll remember Den-tal Assistant Appreciation

Day is every day. 5. I swear I will attend

and support the dynamic Dr. Samuel Lee when he opens the world of Face-book and Instagram for

Arcadia Chamber mem-bers at Embassy Suites, at 11 a.m., Jan. 22.

4. I will swear even though Will Rogers nev-er met a man he didn’t

like … he never met every property manager in the San Gabriel Valley.

3. I’ll use the word “love” at least once every day; no mirrors allowed.

2. I will not mix plaid, stripes, and paisley attire … thus ignoring fashion tips from my co-workers.

1. I’ll be looking and listening for greatness, humor, and compassion … unless I’m in front of an underwriter.

Happy New Year.

There are many areas in life in which people tend to procrastinate, and es-tate planning is no excep-tion.

Questions about who will get what when you’re gone and who will make financial and medical de-cisions on your behalf, if you are unable to, can be stressful and overwhelm-ing.

As a result, many peo-ple are understandably apprehensive to begin the

Don’t procrastinate, don’t delay, begin your estate planning todayprocess.

In my practice, all too often, I see clients who put off drafting estate planning documents un-til some form of tragedy strikes, and the client and his or her family members are left scrambling to get their affairs in order at the last minute. Unfortunate-ly, half the time, they are too late.

Although it can be un-pleasant to think about planning for a time when

you will no longer be here, it’s important to have the proper estate planning documents prepared to avoid an uncertain fu-ture. Otherwise, your loved ones will be forced

to wrangle with costly and time-consuming probate and conservatorship pro-ceedings.

Don’t let the anxiety over making these tough decisions sabotage your

ability to properly plan for your future.

Estate planning is not about planning for your death but rather preserv-ing your hard-earned assets and ensuring that those you love are taken care of.

Although estate plan-ning can be a difficult topic to discuss, I strive to make the planning process as painless and straightfor-ward as possible and help my clients have peace of

mind in knowing they are protecting what matters to them.

The Temple City Chamber of Commerce has partnered with Aflac and will be hosting a sem-inar: “The Missing Piece of Company Benefits EXPLAINED … How to

Learn how to save on taxes at Chamber seminar, Jan. 22Save on Taxes While Ex-panding Benefits.”

Many businesses have been overwhelmed with regulations that there has been no time to consid-er optional benefits for

their employees. Through Section 125, the federal government has granted exemption of FICA taxes on many specific policies. The employees elect and fund these policies and

g r o u p - d i s -counted rate on these ben-efits.

“Go Fund Me” has be-come very popular re-cently, as  57% of Ameri-cans have less than $1,000 in their bank account for an unexpect-

This seminar is sched-uled for 10 a.m., Jan. 22, at the Temple City Cham-ber of Commerce, 5938 Kauffman Ave., Temple City, CA 91780. To RSVP, phone 626-286-3101 or e-mail: [email protected]. Concrete as a decorative material More than a HomeSerkan Erenay, General Building

Among the ancient Assyrians and Babylonians, the bonding substance most often used was clay. The Egyp-tians developed  a substance more closely resembling modern-day concrete by using lime and  gypsum  as binders.

The Romans first invented what is called today as hydraulic cement-based concrete. They built numerous concrete structures in Rome, including the Pantheon which has a 42-meter (138 feet) diameter dome made of poured concrete, one of the finest examples of Roman architecture that survives to this day.

The Pantheon is the best-preserved ancient Roman building and was completed in 125 AD. Its magnificent dome is a lasting testimony to the genius of Roman ar-chitects.

The name concrete comes from the Latin “concretus,” which means to grow together. This is a good name for this material, as the chemical hydration process, which mainly occurs over time in scale of hours and days, causes the material to grow together from a viscoelastic, moldable liquid into a hard, rigid solid.

The cement most commonly used today is called portland cement.

The process to produce this type of cement was in-vented by Joseph Aspdin in England during the early 1800’s.

Concrete is inexpensive and strong. It holds up hous-es, paves driveways, and keeps fence posts from tipping over.

But beyond these most common usages, it can be a decorative material. You can pour concrete into molds which become countertops, sinks, tile floors, fireplace mantels, hearths or even art work.

Among all the ways of using decorative concrete in-doors, countertops are probably the most popular.

Pros and cons of using concrete as a decorative ma-terial:

•Concrete isstrong,readilyavailableand inexpen-sive.

•Itiseasytocustomizeinanyshape,colororsize.•Decorativeconcretecanbecarvedwithlittleeffort.•Itstains.•Itmaycrackasitfreezesandthaws.•Itisaheavymaterial,140poundspercubicfoot.Most concrete is gray. But it does not have to be.

Mineral pigments, stains, and even ordinary paint can be added to give concrete the magic of color.

Creating different patterns with concrete:• Tile mosaic: From ancient  Mesopotamia  to Me-

soamerica, mosaics not only reveal the artistry of civ-ilizations but also provide an invaluable insight into what ancient peoples wore, ate, and looked like. Inside, one can see gods, myths, ritual practices, sporting activities, agricultural techniques, archi-tecture, transport, weapons, and tools.

Try using this historical method on your flooring. Set bits of tile or pottery into damp concrete or sand mix to cre-ate mosaic designs.

•Moldedmosaic:placeglassorotherdecorative bits into a mold to cast a mo-saic design into a countertop.

• Stampeddesign: create interestingdesigns by stamping concrete while it is

still quite pliable. •Texturedmat:Tocreateaskid-resistantandbeauti-

ful surface, emboss the surface with a texture. Concrete paths and patios often mimic natural stone.

A stepping stone path can be created with concrete ma-terial.

One advantage to making this is you can have any shape you want depending on the mold shapes. For most of these ideas, I strongly recommend hiring a pro-fessional. It may sound or look easy to do; however, it definitely requires an expert when dealing with a dec-orative project.

If you are curious about the grout you always see on concrete paths, this is used to avoid cracking. Actual-ly, when I asked this question to a long-time structural engineer friend at a job, he said, “the concrete floor will crack for sure. If we do not create grouts, the concrete will decide where it will crack and we don’t want con-crete to decide that. We want to decide the location of the crack.”

Enjoy decorating your home with concrete.

New this year was a category for local businesses. Chamber members Quality Bookkeeping, First Baptist Church, and the Camellia Square shopping center (above) were among the winners.

In the recent Holiday Decorating Contest, residents were no longer required to enter or register for the contest. Instead, a judging committee of fellow residents toured the city’s 70 miles of streets, Dec. 10-11, and selected the award-winning properties. See story next page.

When most people think about seeing the chiroprac-tor, they assume that it can only be for neck pain or back pain. Most people are often unaware that a chiropractor is completely versed in the treatment of virtually any joint in the human body.

One very common issue that we see at Britton Chiro-practic is chronic knee pain. You may experience knee pain during a long drive, concert or movie theater expe-rience. This pain is commonly due to a condition called patellar tracking syndrome. This happens when the pa-tella (kneecap) moves out of position as the knee bends or straightens. In most cases, the patella will move in an outward motion however in some cases it can move to the inside of the leg.

How does it develop?Knee pain is brought on by a combination of factors:•Overuseofthejoint•Damagetocartilage•Theshapeofthepatella

Consider chiropractic treatment for chronic knee pain

•Musclesandtendonsinthelegbeingtootightortoo loose

•Traumatointernalstructuresoftheknee•GeneticsTreatment:After a complete check-up, Dr. Britton will perform

chiropractic adjustment and mobilization techniques to areas that are restricted of movement in the knee. These techniques will improve function along with ul-trasound therapy and a series of rehabilitation exercises to improve the healing process. Treatment often takes several weeks but is a great alternative to addictive pain medications that simply mask the problem and can have dangerous side effects. Chiropractic management will include:

Most women give their all to family, work, and com-munity, sometimes for years. Although they’ve enjoyed it, along the way they may have allowed their bonds of friendship to gradually fray and their ability to let go and have fun to diminish, if not disappear completely.

Membership in the Red Hat Society is a rewarding way to reconnect with old friends, make new friends, and rediscover the joy of getting together with other women purely for the purpose of having fun.

RHS members whole-heartedly promote periods of recess from the cares and duties of everyday life.

In good news for Temple City women 50 years to 80 years young, the Red Hat Society has a new West San Gabriel Valley chapter which includes Temple City, Pas-adena, Arcadia, and Monrovia called the Scarlet Rubies.

You only have one life, and if it is not going in the direction you want, now is the time to make chang-es. Having a specific meaning and purpose in your life helps encourage you toward living a fulfilling and in-spired life, so come play with the Scarlet Rubies and change your outlook on life.

The Red Hat Society is community created to con-nect like-minded women who make the most of life through the power of fun and friendship.

Queens and members utilize the Red Hat Society’s signature colors of red and purple (for those over 50) and pink and lavender (for those under 50). Our regalia makes us unique and special, causes others to notice us, and gives women you may come in contact with a rea-son to ask questions and potentially join us.

If you are interested in joining Scarlet Rubies of Tem-ple City, please email Queen Elsa at [email protected].

The Temple City Chamber of Commerce dropped off the donations from their annual holiday toy drive to support LA County Fire’s Spark of Love toys for children. L-R: Board Chair Serkan Erenay, Lukas Erenay, Cynthia Vance (Kiwanis Club President) and Chamber President Peter Choi.

Anthony Muñoz, a member of Temple City’s Boy Scout Troop 167, was recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout by the Boy Scouts of America.

Anthony began scout-ing in first grade as a Tiger scout at St. Luke’s School and chose St. Luke Par-ish as the recipient of his service project. His proj-ect included replacing all existing plants and shrubs in front of the parish of-fice with drought resistant plants, trees and ground cover. Through the gen-erosity of parishioners, friends, family, and lo-cal businesses, Anthony raised nearly $4,000 in do-nations and supplies. He led a group of nearly 30

volunteers to complete the project earlier this year.

While in Troop 167, Anthony served as a Troop Guide, Chaplain, Den Chief, Patrol Lead-er, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, and Senior Patrol Leader.

He spent many sum-mers at Cherry Valley, Emerald Bay, and several other Boy Scout Summer Camps.

Anthony has earned 31 merit badges and two religious medals and par-ticipated in countless ser-vice projects for the local community benefitting schools, churches, and se-nior living facilities.

Scouting gave Anthony many opportunities to perform service for others and learn leadership.

He is a senior at St. Francis High School in La Cañada, CA, where he is one of the leaders of the Robotics Team, assistant director on KNIT (the student TV news channel).

As a member of the National Honor Society and California Scholarship Federation, Anthony has been on the St. Francis Scholar Roll

Anthony Muñoz attains Eagle Scout rank with service and leadership

his entire four years at St. Francis. He credits scouting and his faith with giving him the confidence and desire to pursue lead-ership opportunities.

As three city coun-cil members are running for re-election with no challengers, the city of Temple City will not have its bi-annual municipal election that would have taken place March 3, city officials announced.

The three available seats belong to city coun-cil members Cynthia Sternquist, Nanette Fish and William Man. Stern-quist was first elected to the city council in 2011,

Unopposed incumbents renders election unnecessaryand Fish and Man in 2015. All three will serve anoth-er four-year term expiring in 2024.

Challengers for the three available seats had until Dec. 6 to state their intentions to run for pub-lic office. However, since Sternquist, Fish and Man were the only ones to file, the election will not be held in accordance with California Elections Code 10229.

According to city clerk Peggy Kuo, the other time the city did not hold a

municipal election was in 2017, when incum-bents Vincent Yu and Tom Chavez ran unopposed.

Not holding the March 3, 2020 election is expect-ed to save the city upwards of $90,000.

The city council is scheduled to meet Dec. 17 to appoint Sternquist, Fish and Man to their four-year terms effective March 3.

The next munici-pal election will be held March 2, 2022 with two city council seats becom-ing available.

Not holding the March 3 election expected to save the city $90,000

Temple City Patriotic News

by monique Weiland

As the Temple City Blue Star Banner Program enters its 16th year, its vol-unteers look forward to a fabulous year and thank their many members whose support and patri-otism allow the organiza-tion to continue hosting the recognition banners along Temple City’s ma-jor streets and sending packages to our active military personnel to let them know we are think-ing about them.

Over the holidays, Christmas elves Margie Roush, Kris Waltmire, Za-rina Herrera, Mara Serr-ara, and Patricia Hendrix came to Blue Star Execu-tive Director Sharon John-son’s house to wrap, pack, and mail all the goodies

Blue Star Banner celebrates 16th year with donation from West San Gabriel Valley Realtors Foundation

that were collected and donated.

The assembled box-es included Christmas stockings, Hickory Farms treats, candy, cookies, blankets, gloves, hats, per-sonal hygiene items, and much more.

Bruce and Loraine Carson wrote a letter for all the volunteers to sign and place into every box. The students of St. Luke’s Catholic School sent cards

for the boxes contain-ing personal messages for each of Temple City’s active military members thanking them for their sacrifice and service.

The year ended on a high note with a $1,000 donation from the West San Gabriel Valley Real-tors Foundation.

George and Cecelia Ru-dar, who have been regu-lar attendees to the bi-an-nual recognition dinners,

were instrumental in the SGV Real-tors Foundation providing the Blue Star program with this generous do-nation.

Johnson is passionate about providing ser-vice to our mil-itary personnel. “If a 19-year-old can protect our country, I can ral-ly friends, volun-teers, and Temple Citians to support them,” she said. For more infor-mation about the Blue Star Banner Program, to vol-unteer, or submit donations, please contact Johnson at 626-285-5852.

2018 LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

All above are National Association of REALTORS designations

The Woman’s Club of Tem-ple City held its annual Com-munity Christmas Party, Dec. 8. The event was attended by more than 130 members of the community including local first responders from the Los Ange-les County Fire Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department.

There were more than 70 op-portunity drawings, including a bicycle donated by Temple City Bike Shop, and many other busi-ness, corporate, and personal donations.

Entertainment included performances by the Temple City High School Brighter Side Singers and Larry DiPeppe with Theresa Tomaro, and of course a visit from Santa Claus.

This event also provides an opportunity for the Woman’s Club of Temple City to honor two individuals with a Human-itarian Award. This year’s recip-ients were Carole Rodenbucher and Kathy Mushinskie. These two Woman’s Club members have contributed years of service to the Temple City Community, and you can read more about them in the January Forecaster which is available on the Wom-an’s Club website www.Woman-sClubOfTempleCity.org.

At more than 100 members strong, this event would not have been the success it was without the leadership of Com-mittee Chairman Rachel LaSota and her team.

L-R: Woman’s Club President Dawn Tarin, Humanitarian Award honoree Kathy Mushinskie, Mayor Nanette Fish, Humanitarian Award honoree Carole Rodenbucher.

Among the many fabulous prizes was this bike donated by Ron and Candy McKiernan of Temple City Bike Shop.

Temple Station’s Captain David Flores took his wife Wendy for a sleigh ride.
