Hapag-Lloyd motives to join the Clean Cargo Group

Hapag-Lloyd has been active in environmental issues for some time

Environmental Policy defined in 1995

Various technical improvements to reduce energy consumption and emissions on

• vessels

• containers

• facilities

Hapag-Lloyd has recognized the efforts of its customers/shippers to show a positive environmental profile

In consequence Hapag-Lloyd has decided to formalize its own environmental efforts and register the company and its product, the door-to-door transport under ISO 14001 (June 2003)

During discussions with customers Hapag-Lloyd became aware of the ongoing dialogue about a uniform Environmental Reporting Standard and as Hapag-Lloyd believes in standardization on a high level we wanted to participate in this good idea

What were Hapag-Lloyd’s objectives ?

Support the requested input for the EPS with operational details and explanation of the structure of a Container Liner Service

Highlight the implications caused by Alliances and Consortia (Strings of vessels).

Emphasize that pre and post transport (Green Cargo issues) are also very often managed or controlled by ocean carriers and/or their logistic entities (door-to-door concept).

Use the forum of the Clean Cargo Group to promote Hapag-Lloyd’s ISO 14001 door-to-door registration and general environmental efforts towards our customers.

What are the benefits for Hapag-Lloyd ?

Standardization (EPS):

Efficient and structured reporting from well established inhouse sources on a continuous basis.Avoidance of multiple shipper’s formats for presentation of data.

Transparency:

Inhouse and outside useable format with key information to describe our environmental data and planning

Comparison:

Internal and external benchmarking (EPS) will drive the issue forward.

Additional knowledge about environmental developments

Better understanding of customers’ environmental concerns

Improved environmental image / competitive advantage

Better understanding of our own environmental performance

Our company’s learning curve

Hapag-Lloyd view was confirmed: As a global carrier you need to organize an environmental management globally with one single responsible point of entry.

Inhouse awareness is continuously growing further through ongoing discussion (ISO 14001, Clean Cargo, NTM etc.).

Some competitors are doing a fine job on these issues.

If you want to initiate new issues or correct unrealistic developments

you need to do it jointly.
