OUT NOWThree of a kind: MoDus Architects
An office building, a farmhouse and an artist residence. Three of a kind documents three projects in and near Bressanone (Italy), de-signed by MoDus Architects. The extension of the offices of Damiani Holz&Ko,The Landmann Farm Estate and the Kostner House and Studio are viewed through the eyes of fashion pho-tographer Marco Pietracupa, architecture critic Hans Ibelings and architects Sandy Attia and Matteo Scagnol.
In several ways these three projects can be seen as three of a kind. The appearance of each is very much determined by the extensive use of wood. Moreover, all three projects are additions to existing structures. Each project was built for a private client who selected MoDus by way of invited competitions. And, last but not least, there is proximity in time and space. The three projects were conceived in a limited time frame, between 2008 and 2013, and are located in and around Bressanone in South Tyrol, Italy. There are obvious differences between the three projects but there is a rec-ognizable coherence as well, in form, compo-sition, materialization and even in approach. One striking element is that the interior is an integral part of the project, offering a complete – and completely designed – inner world.
The three projects featured here are embed-ded in South Tyrol while at the same time ad-dressing larger issues and in so doing manag-ing to transcend the cultural boundaries of the region. All three are made for internationally connected clients, who are nonetheless rooted in their local culture. The same holds true for the architects, who infuse local South Tyrolean architecture with their global intelligence.
Sandy Attia (Cairo, 1974) and Matteo Scagnol (Trieste, 1968) met at Harvard and started an office in Bressanone, Italy in 2000.
Marco Pietracupa (Bressanone, 1967) is a pho-tographer whose subjects range from fashion models to prostitutes and from his own family to architecture.
Hans Ibelings (Rotterdam, 1963) is a Dutch architecture critic, and publisher of The Archi-tecture Observer.
The aim of The Architecture Observer is to publish books that cover relatively uncharted territories and explore unconventional per-spectives.

Un edifi cio per uffi ci, un insediamento rurale e una casa per un artista. “Three of a kind” presenta questi tre progetti di MoDus Archi-tects costruiti a Bressanone e nei suoi din-torni. L’ampliamento degli uffi ci della Damiani Holz&Ko, Il maso Landmann e la casa / studio Kostner sono visti attraverso gli occhi del fo-tografo di moda Marco Pietracupa, il critico di architettura Hans Ibelings e gli architetti Sandy Attia e Matteo Scagnol.
Per diversi aspetti, questi progetti possono es-sere visti come una triade. Vi è un uso deter-minate del legno, sono tutti addizioni di strut-ture esistenti e vi è una prossimità di tempo e spazio. I tre progetti sono stati concepiti e costruiti tra 2008 e 2013 nella valle Isarco in Alto Adige. Benché vi siano differenze sostanziali tra i tre progetti esiste una coerenza riconoscibile nella forma, nella composizione e nell’esecuzione. Uno degli approcci che colpisce è la cura nella formulazione degli interni che offre un inaspettato e compiuto mondo interiore.
I tre progetti presentati nel libro sono radicati nel paesaggio montano, ma al contempo richi-amano orizzonti più ampi permettendo di tras-gredire i confi ni culturali della regione. Tutti e tre sono stati costruiti per una clientela privata di respiro internazionale, ma con profondo legame al territorio e alla cultura d’origine. Lo stesso vale per gli architetti, che donano all’architettura altoatesina la loro intelligenza globale.
Sandy Attia (Il Cairo, 1974) e Matteo Scagnol (Trieste, 1968) s’incontrano all’Harvard Univer-sity e iniziano la propria attività a Bressanone nel 2000.
Marco Pietracupa (Bressanone, 1967) è un fotografo i cui soggetti spaziano dai modelli di moda alle prostitute, dalla propria famiglia, fi no all’architettura.
Hans Ibelings (Rotterdam, 1963) è un critico di architettura olandese ed editore di The Archi-tecture Observer.
L’obbiettivo di The Architecture Observer è quello di pubblicare libri su territori relativa-mente inesplorati e di tracciare prospettive non convenzionali.

Ein Bürogebäude, ein Bauernhof und eine Künstler-residenz. Three of a Kind dokumentiert 3 Projekte in und um Brixen (Italien), entworfen von MoDus acrhitects. Die Erweiterung des Firmengebäudes Damiani Holz&Ko, das Künstlerhaus Kostner mit Atelier und die Sanierung und Revitalisierung des Landmannhofes werden durch die Augen des Mod-efotografen Marco Pietracupa, des Architekturkritik-ers Hans Ibelings und ihrer Architekten, Sandy Attia und Matteo Scagnol gesehen.
In mehrfacher Hinsicht können diese drei Projekte als „three of a kind“ gesehen werden. Die Erschei-nung jedes einzelnen wird sehr stark durch die umfangreiche Nutzung von Holz geprägt. Zudem sind alle drei Projekte Ergänzungen zu bestehe-nden Strukturen. Jedes Projekt wurde für einen privaten Bauherren realisiert, der MoDus Architects über einen geladenen Wettbewerb ausgewählt hat. Und, nicht zuletzt, gibt es zeitliche und örtliche Übereinstimmungen. Die drei Projekte wurden in einem begrenzten Zeitraum, zwischen 2008 und 2013, geplant und realisiert und befi nden sich alle in und um Brixen in Südtirol, Italien. Es gibt offensi-chtliche Unterschiede zwischen den drei Projekten, aber auch einen erkennbaren Zusammenhang, in der Form, der Komposition, der Materialität und auch in der Herangehensweise. Ein auffallendes Element ist die Tatsache, dass der Innenraum einen wesentlichen Teil des Projektes darstellt und eine komplette – und komplett durchdachte – Innenwelt geboten wird.
Die drei Projekte, die hier vorgestellt werden, sind in Südtirol verankert während sie gleichzeitig größere Themen ansprechen und auf diese Weise über die kulturellen Grenzen der Region hinaus-reichen. Alle drei sind für international vernetzte Kunden realisiert, die nichtsdestotrotz tief in ihrer regionalen Kultur verwurzelt sind. Dasselbe trifft auch auf die Architekten zu, welche die örtliche Südtiroler Architektur mit ihrer globalen Intelligenz verbinden.
Sandy Attia (Kairo, 1974) und Matteo Scagnol (Triest, 1968) haben sich an der Harvard kennengel-ernt und im Jahr 2000 ein Büro in Brixen (Italien) gegründet.
Marco Pietracupa (Brixen, 1967) ist ein Fotograf dessen Motive von Modeln über Prostituierte zu seiner eigenen Familie und Architektur reichen.
Hans Ibelings (Rotterdam, 1963) ist ein niederlän-discher Architekturkritiker und Verleger von The Architecture Observer.
Das Ziel von The Architecture Observer ist es, Bücher herauszugeben, welche relativ neue Bere-iche behandeln und unkonventionelle Perspektiven erforschen.
