The Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, a National Historic Landmark, is maintained as a "working his-tory" museum by Pennsylvania's County of Bucks, Department of Parks and Recreation. Handmade tiles are still produced in a manner similar to that devel-oped by the pottery's founder and builder, Henry Chapman Mercer (1856-1930). Mercer was a major proponent of the Arts & Crafts Movement in America. He directed the work at the pottery from 1898 until his death in 1930. You may still purchase handmade reissues of tiles, mosaics, and relief panels made in the American Arts & Crafts tradition from us. Come visit and tour our historic museum. Check our catalogues to see the many tiles we have for gifts and installations such as kitchens, fireplaces, floors and walls. Tours are of-fered every half-hour and consist of a brief video and a walk through the facility. Visitors will see original installations, various displays, and selected aspects of current tile production. Admission fees and operating hours are subject to change. Please call to verify.

Open Daily 10:00 AM -4:45 PM Closed selected holidays

ABOUT OUR TILE

AMERICAN MADE AMERICAN MADE AMERICAN MADE , from our local red clay in Bucks County , Pennsylvania, our tiles are pressed out of exact copies of the museum’s original archived molds and allowed to dry for a pe-riod of several weeks. Once dry, they are fired in a kiln to about 1848 ° F, allowed to cool and then hand painted with glaze colors and fired again to a higher temperature of about 1945° F.

All tiles are about ½” to ¾” thick, unless otherwise noted. They are multicolored and are painted to be as historically accurate as possible. Colors may not be modified. Due to the use of natural unpurified materials and the handcrafted nature of the product each tile is unique.

MUSICIAN TILES

Henry Mercer created these musicians in 1915 to embellish a fireplace which included large panels inspired by several Wagner operas. These hand painted musicians, based on medieval and renaissance sources, appear to spring from the center of a flower. Some musicians are depicted as angels. All twelve wear varied crowns and flowing robes .

Each handpainted musician is a modeled relief cut out in silhou-ette of the design. They each measure approximately 6” tall by 4 1/2” wide and are about 3/4” thick.

SHIP TILES

A number of different sea vessels were given tile form by Mercer to illustrate the history , mythology and romance of traversing the oceans. From the ghost ship of the Flying Dutchman to the infa-mous Bounty whose crew mutinied, these ships remind one of the incredible quest for new land, and the race for fame, glory and riches , in the early years of exploration.

Each handpainted relief ship is cut out in silhouette of the design. They each measure approximately 4 ” tall by 4 ” wide and are about 3/4” thick.

In 1789 Captain Bligh set sail from Tahiti in the HMS Bounty with a cargo of bread-fruit bound for the Caribbean. Mutineers, led by Fletcher Christian ,set Captain Bligh and his supporters afloat in a launch. After returning to Ta-hiti, Fletcher and his crew fled to Pitcairn Island to avoid the British Royal Navy and burned the Bounty in what they named Bounty Bay.

La Perouse , a French ex-plorer who set sail from Brest in 1785, led an expe-dition of scientific discovery around the world. The two ships in his expedition, the Astrolabe and the Boussole, sank in Melanesia about 1789, and the wreck of the Boussole was later discov-ered in 1826.

One of Columbus’ famous ships, the Santa Maria, was slower and wider than his other two more nim-ble ships. On Christmas Day , 1492, the Santa Maria ran aground on Hispaniola, on what is now called Haiti. It was disassem-bled and it timbers used to build the first Spanish settlement.

The Wager set sail in 1740 from England to fight the Spanish off the coast of Chile. Due to a storm she was separated from her squadron and shipwrecked on a desert island south of Chile. The crew divided, some supporting the Captain while others chose to separate and attempted their way back to Eng-land via small boats they constructed from the wreck timbers. Having left England with just less than 300 men aboard the Wager, only 10 were to finally return .

CITY TILES

A number of different sites, both real and imagined, were also given tile form by Mercer . The tiles represent places such as Huitzilio Pochtli, called the ‘Temple of Sacrifice” by the Spanish conquistador Cortes, and the imagined Manoa, which the Span-ish called El Dorado.

Each handpainted relief ’City’ is cut out in silhouette of the de-sign. Most cities are approximately 1” thick.
