How much do fluctuating exchange rates affect my clients’ money transfers?

Example 1: Buying property overseasA European property priced at €250,000 would have cost you £210,000 in late March 2014 but would have cost £11,500 less by the start of July 2014. Knowing when the time is right to make a currency transaction can save your clients a lot of money. Our currency experts will help your clients time their transactions better.

Example 2: EmigrationYour client is emigrating to Australia and has accumulated a net wealth of £250,000 after the sale of a house, car and other assets. Had your client exchanged currency at the end of January 2014 your client would have arrived with A$477,500. But if they had waited two months until the start of April 2014 they would have had A$35,000 less in their pocket.

Example 3: Pension transfers & Offshore investmentsAs part of their emigration plans or simply for tax benefits, your client wished to transfer their UK pension valued at £500,000 to Australia. They started making plans in January 2013 and, realising their pension will not be released from the pension

plan for another year but being nervous of the decline in the value of the Pound, they wanted to take advantage of the likely recovery of Sterling. Rather than converting their funds at the available exchange rate (A$1.49) and receiving A$745,000, they decide to protect themselves with a Stop Loss order set to guarantee a worst case exchange rate of A$1.44 to the Pound. This left 3% of leeway but if the Pound had continued to decline in value, their £500,000 was guaranteed to be converted into at least A$720,000 as a bare minimum.

The Sterling – Australian Dollar exchange rate did drop to A$1.45 but managed to remain above their Stop Loss level and rallied for the remainder of the year. The clients raised the Stop Loss level, locking in further gains as the year progressed. Upon maturity of the pension in January 2014, the client cancelled the Stop Loss order and converted their £500,000 at an exchange rate of A$1.85. The A$925,000 they received into their Australian pension pot was A$180,000 (24%) more than they would have received if they had simply placed a Forward Contract. And that saving came about through the use of good risk management, excellent timing and access to the right market instrument through Halo Financial.

Example 4: Gap year students and international education feesMore and more students are taking ongap year programmes overseas. Others are studying at international institutions for higher and diverse quality in teaching and to gain a world of new experiences. We support these networks by allowing individuals and parents to make their budget go further when paying for fees, resources and lodgings. An extra £100 a month can make a whole lot of difference to a student trying to manage their finances and using Halo Financial for currency transfers will be an effective solution over using a bank.
