It was no ordinary year for HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. The College celebrated a significant milestone in 2014 – its 50th anniversary – and the chance to see how many lives have been positively impacted in 50 years.

The College was established on Feb. 14, 1964, as the first community college chartered in Pennsylvania, and 50 years later, the College’s employees, community members, board members, students, alumni and others came together to honor the College and its significant accomplishments. The year was filled with celebrations, student recognition, education and community support.

To kick off the 50th anniversary, individuals were encouraged to design a 50th anniversary logo and the HACC community was invited to cast its vote for the best one. With more than 2,000 votes cast, HACC’s alumna, Raven McKeal, was the winner!

HACC kicked off its 50th anniversary with birthday parties at each of its five campuses. From homemade cupcakes prepared by HACC’s culinary students and presentations of proclamations to speeches from past alumni and current students, each campus put a unique twist on the birthday parties.

Development of YOURS: New Brand to Increase Awareness and Engage StudentsHACC launched a new branding campaign to engage and retain students enrolled at HACC’s five campuses and Virtual Learning Program. Extensive research was conducted by an integrated marketing communications firm to understand the perceptions of HACC and what the public relates to. The research confirmed that many Central Pennsylvania residents believe that HACC belongs to them. They feel a kinship with the College and believe in it. As a result, the new brand needed to be flexible, relatable and unique while also communicating that HACC is YOUR College. Using simple words, such as “Completely YOURS.” or “Financially YOURS.,” HACC is encouraging and showing traditional and non-traditional students, the parents of high school students, community leaders and the public that HACC supports you – whether you are completing two courses, transferring to a four-year college or completing your associate degree.

Opening of the Time CapsuleOn Feb. 28, 2014, HACC opened a time capsule that was hidden in the cornerstone of the John Hall Technology Center since October 1985. It included envelopes from constituency groups, the Fourth Estate newspaper, pictures and floppy computer disks.

Dedication of Ted Lick Administration Building (TLAB)Beginning in January 2013, the Wildwood Conference Center on the Harrisburg Campus was transformed into the C. Ted Lick Administration Building. The C. Ted Lick Administration Building now houses administrative offices for central administration employees. Employees in the following functional units moved into the renovated space in January 2014.

On March 4, 2014, HACC dedicated the newly renovated Ted Lick Administration Building in celebration of the 50th anniversary of HACC’s first Board of Trustees meeting. HACC employees, retired employees, students, Board of Trustees members, HACC Foundation Board members, donors and alumni joined Dr. Ski as he formally dedicated the building. The two-story, 30,000-square-foot building is named in honor of late Ted Lick, a founding HACC Foundation Board member and donor. Among those in attendance at the celebration were Mrs. Kelly Lick, the widow of Ted Lick, and Mr. Andy Lick, son of Ted Lick.

It’s Time to ReDISCOVER HACC!From April 21-26, 2014, HACC said thank you by showing the community how HACC is completely YOURS. Students, employees, donors, retirees, board members and the public were invited to discover everything that HACC has to offer – for FREE. HACC encouraged individuals to visit its five campuses to participate in more than 60 free events and activities, including lectures, presentations, classes, movie screenings, open houses, tours and more.A sample of the events included:• Dr. Brett Stumphy’s presentation of “A String of Pearls: Memory, Mystery

and Batman.” • A movie screening of “1,000 to 1: The Cory Weissman Story.” • HACC students led a stream cleanup along the Paxton Creek to celebrate

Earth Day. • Massage therapy students offered chair massages. • The Sen. John J. Shumaker Public Safety Center (PSC) held an open

house, including a confined space rescue, fire apparatus and aerial ladder static display, vehicle accident and extrication static display, a backdraft demonstration and more.

Additionally, five current or former faculty members with decades of experience at HACC shared their memories of the College through a panel discussion, “Remembering HACC Through the Decades: What Has It Been Like to Teach and Learn Here?” Panelists included (pictured left to right): Ron Rebuck, director of nursing; Linda Myers, professor of mathematics; Trumbull Simmons, emeritus professor of English and communications; Jim Terry, emeritus professor of government and politics; and Yvonne Milspaw, senior professor of English and humanities.

Here are some of the highlights of the discussion, but for a deeper look into the history, watch the video of the panel discussion.

• When asked, “why HACC?”, they all had the same answer: “We love teaching.”

• One of the special things about HACC is that students have direct access to the faculty. Few classes have more than 26 students, and many faculty linger in the classroom long after the formal lecture has ended. HACC faculty relishes the opportunity to interact with students. They enjoy being in the classroom and most of all, they love seeing the spark when a student “gets it.” Many of the faculty interviewed for the 50th anniversary story bank thought they might just work at HACC for a few years to get a start and move on, but ended up staying for their entire careers.

• When asked about their vision for HACC’s future, panel members agreed they hope to see HACC maintain its solid liberal arts core. Students need a broad-based education that will prepare them for lifelong learning and provide them with the critical thinking skills they need to be successful. HACC’s liberal arts core helps students to understand the world around them, evaluate data and make good judgments, whether personal, career or civic in nature. The liberal arts serve as a solid base on which to build skills throughout a lifetime. The panel agreed that HACC faculty doesn’t teach our students what to think; they teach them how to think.

• HACC’s alumni also feel a special connection to the College and their professors. HACC’s students enjoy small class sizes and often form strong bonds with their professors.

Changing Lives with Tuition Giveaways: Dr. Ski’s Miles of Gratitude – Tour de HACCFor the first time in HACC’s 50-year history, the College gave away tuition vouchers on the spot, providing immediate financial relief to current and prospective HACC students. HACC defines tuition giveaways as funds given on the spot to individuals to be used for tuition and fees for credit and noncredit courses at HACC. HACC President John J. “Ski” Sygielski, Ed.D., expressed his gratitude for all that Central Pennsylvania does for the College by biking more than 170 miles – in just three days – to give away $41,000 in scholarships, 23 bicycles and more than 50 other giveaways. Dr. Ski stopped at each of HACC’s five campuses, from April 22-24, 2014 for Dr. Ski’s Miles of Gratitude – Tour de HACC and greeted more than 1,300 HACC alumni, board members, community members, employees, donors and students.

July2014HACC’s Treasure Hunt for Tuition GiveawaysHACC was inspired by the national hidden cash fad, but instead of giving away cash, the College gave away something better! From July 14-25, 2014, HACC hid 10 $1,000 tuition giveaways in its 10-county service area (Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, Schuylkill and York counties) for any member of the community to find. Each day, the College shared a clue on its collegewide Facebook page and Twitter account to direct individuals to the tuition giveaway. HACC shared clues until the treasure was found.Today, 10 individuals are smiling because they followed the steps and claimed one of the 10 HACC treasures. The recipients of the tuition giveaways were thrilled to find the treasures. Some of the recipients are current students of the College, while others joined HACC for the first time. Many of HACC’s students must pay for their own tuition, and they have additional support now.

Congratulations to the following individuals who claimed a HACC treasure!

Dauphin County: Tiffany Mutzabaugh is a student at HACC’s Harrisburg Campus with a focus on paralegal studies. She found the HACC treasure at the Harrisburg Senators Metro Bank Park under the bushes.

Lebanon County: Jaclinn Wagner is taking classes at the Lebanon and Harrisburg campuses and through HACC’s Virtual Learning. She found the HACC treasure at the Timeless Café in Lebanon.

Schuylkill County: Cynthia Deitzler is a student at the Lancaster Campus, and she is studying nursing. She found the HACC treasure at the Berger’s Market and chose to participate because she pays for much of her schooling out of pocket.

Franklin County: Alexander Egner attended HACC in the past, and he was happy with his experience. He found the treasure at the Chambersburg Heritage Center in a vault.

Juniata County: Outside of the Juniata County Courthouse, in a cannon on the courthouse lawn, Harrisburg Campus student, Jenna Mock, found the treasure. Jenna is studying biology. She said, “I can use every bit of money

I can get to help pay for college. I love HACC. I love the professors, and this was a great opportunity. I also have been able to see so many different counties!”

York County: The York County treasure was found by Aimee MacKenzie at York Revolution’s Santander Stadium. She found the treasure hidden on the Brooks Robinson statue. She started at HACC’s York Campus in fall 2014 and is studying

elementary education. She chose HACC because the College offers such great prices for the same exact courses offered at other universities. She stated, “The treasure hunt is awesome. The great price of HACC’s courses will go down even more!”

Perry County: Christian Woodard claimed the HACC treasure, which was hidden at Butcher’s Farm Market. Christian is enrolled in HACC’s Mechanical Engineering Program at the Harrisburg Campus.

Adams County: Dustin Zeller started classes at HACC’s York Campus in fall 2014 and is studying Computer Science. After a few clues, he found the treasure underneath a picnic table at Mr. G’s Ice Cream in Gettysburg.

Lancaster County: Miranda Lou Henne found the HACC treasure at the Spanish American Civic Association’s Tec Centro. She’s studying paralegal studies at the Lancaster Campus. Miranda indicated that she pays for school out of her own pocket so the tuition giveaway helps a lot.

Cumberland County: On the last day, Christopher Fry found the hidden treasure under a chair at the Panera Bread in Mechanicsburg. He is a current student studying computer information at the Midtown Trade and Technology Center.

Frank J. Dixon Tournament for Scholarships at HACCOn Sept. 22, 2014, HACC held the 18th annual Frank J. Dixon Tournament for Scholarships at the Hershey Country Club, West Course. October2014The Golden Anniversary Gala, held Oct. 25, 2014, at the Radisson Hotel Harrisburg, provided an opportunity for HACC friends, students, employees, board members, alumni and donors to celebrate all that the College has done in 50 years. More than 300 individuals attended this lively event, which included a photo booth, successful silent auction, moving speeches and music by a phenomenal band, Cruise Control, which had people up on their feet, dancing the night away.

Special guest speakers included emcee Sherry Christian, CBS 21 News This Morning anchor; Pete Wambach, HACC graduate, retired Pennsylvania state representative and HACC trustee; and Karen Morris-Priester, M.D., HACC nursing graduate and first grandmother to attend Yale Medical School.

Closing of the Time CapsuleHACC held a ceremony on Nov. 18, 2014, to close a four-inch by three-inch by 10-inch time capsule filled with memorabilia and other items representative of the anniversary year. The ceremony was held outside of the John Hall Technology Center on the Harrisburg Campus. Members of the HACC community submitted a variety of items to include in the time capsule.It is the College’s hope that the time capsule will be removed from the cornerstone of the John Hall Technology Center in 2064 – the College’s 100th anniversary. Examples of items submitted by the HACC community included:

• 50th anniversary commemorative pin• Sen. John J. Thank you to everyone who was a part of this significant milestone. HACC has accomplished so much in 50 years and continues to grow.

The initial fundraising goal for gifts and pledges specific to the 50th anniversary was $250,000. Happily, the HACC Foundation far surpassed this goal. To date, the HACC Foundation raised more than $900,000 - just for the 50th anniversary. The sponsorship commitments totaled more than $300,000, and the non-sponsorship 50th anniversary gifts totaled more than $630,000. The College expects the grand total to increase through Dec. 31, 2014.
