LAUNCHING INTO FAITH DISCOVERY

Perhaps like me, you’ve already grown weary of 2016 campaign rhetoric. Thank goodness, it’s not the only narrative in town! Indeed, many sto-ries of faith, of vision, of altruism call us forward. The story of Jesus em-powers us. The witness

of each others’ lives inspires us. That’s a big reason we gather at Binkley on Sunday morn-ings and Wednesday nights…because we need to hear again stories that enliven our hearts to love and hope.

September 13th is Launch Sunday, when Church School, Senior Choir, and Youth Group begin anew! At 9:30 a.m., all ages are invited to gather in the Sanctuary for song and sharing before adults move to the Lounge for an introduction to fall classes, and children preschool-kindergarten meet their teachers in Room 6 and children 1st-5th meet their teach-ers in Room 15. For adults, Church School offers discovery across a spectrum: from mindful parenting to furthering justice in our local community.

On Wednesday Nights, beginning September 16, all ages are invited for supper in the Lounge at 5:30 p.m. ($5.00, adults/$3.00, 12 & under)

At 6:00, children can join Daniel for Junior Choir in Room 15, while adults and youth are welcome to stay in the Lounge for an interest-ing program ending at 7:00.

Binkley’s Homecoming celebra-tion is almost here. We are plan-ning for many old friends to join us for Dr. Forbes’ sermon fol-lowed by lunch. We will need lots of our “covered dishes” to feed the many guests we have invited. Begin to think of your special casserole, salad, dessert, etc. that you might bring. Of course, fried chicken is on the menu...what is Sunday dinner without fried chicken. This is a wonderful celebration to honor Binkley Baptist Church and all the incredible people who love Binkley. If you haven’t already, mark your calendars for Septem-ber 20, and invite your friends!

Don’t forget, too, that Early Wor-ship returns to its school-year schedule of 1st and 3rd Sundays, though on September 6, Early Worship will gather in the Lounge at 9:45 a.m. and beginning on September 20, meet in the Chapel at 8:45 a.m. With joy in the discovery of God

with you, Stephanie

NC PRIDE MARCH

Do you love to walk proudly with a smile on your face and a friend by your side? Does celebrating Marriage Equality while walking the decorated streets of Durham and Duke's campus sound exciting to you? Have you always wanted to share a Binkley parade banner with Stuart Cantrell or Tonya Hamm? Then please put on your favorite walking shoes to join celebratory marchers from our church and community groups around our state for the 2015 NC PRIDE March on September 26. The march itself begins at 1:00 pm but the informative and beautiful booths open on the Duke campus much earlier. Go to www.ncpride.org for full details. Sign up on Dale Osborne's door if you can walk with the Binkley crew (carpools can be arranged). We are grateful to Chris McDougald and Ron Simmons for staffing the Binkley table at Duke. The colors, emotions and spirit of the day will welcome all of us.

KIDSCOPE CHILDCARE UPDATE

Please be in prayerful support of the new child-care program which will be opening its doors in mid-September. Many preparations are occur-ring so that they are fully ready to receive chil-dren with special needs as well as typically de-veloping children.

YOUTH GROUP RENEWAL AND REJOICING

If you are part of a family that houses a 6th - 12th grader then you are officially invited to the Youth Group Kick-off dinner on September 13, 2015 at 6:00 pm in the fellowship hall. This eve-ning of food, re-connecting and rejoicing is open to the entire family. We will meet and welcome our new youth and talk about the coming semes-ter of Gospel inspired activities. I am grateful to Heather Rabalais and Ashley Nissler for agreeing to lead our Youth Committee again this year. They will be contacting you to seek your help on the committee and to invite your participation as a Sunday meal provider. Please say "YES" when-ever the Spirit leads you in that direction. Also, mark your calendars now for our October 17-18 Whitewater rafting adventure! I can't wait to see you all! WDO

BINKLEY PRESCHOOL TO CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF SUPPORTING BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN

Mark your calendars for October 4 during Worship as we will be celebrating a wonderful anniversary for our pre-school. Ellen Cole (Binkley Preschool Director) and the BPS Board are excited about celebrating with the church. More details will follow. Hooray for children!

EARLY WORSHIP RENEWS SCHOOL-YEAR SCHEDULE

Please join us on the 1st and 3rd Sun-days of each month for an engaging worship experience for all ages! We also share joy and concerns and pray in community. First gathering: 9:45 a.m., Sept. 6, in the Lounge. Second gathering: 8:45 a.m., Sept. 20, in the Chapel. Remembering the Blowing Rock Retreat:

We listened, we laughed, and we sang. We were serious and we were silly. We played and we prayed. And we learned more

deeply what it means to love one another the way God does.

The Primetimers are delighted to kick off this season with a presentation by our very own Rev.

Robert Seymour, which he has entitled 'Hopes for the Future in Chapel Hill'. Although Bob just celebrated his 90th birthday, he is still actively engaged in and pas-sionate about projects that will benefit our community. Come join us and be inspired. We will meet at 12:30 on Wednesday, 9/9, in the lounge for lunch ($8) fol-lowed by the program. A sign-up sheet is located on Dale Osborne's door, or contact the office at [email protected]. If you wish to come just for the program, please sign up noting 'no meal' so we can have a chair available for you. For more infor-mation please contact Barbara Harris at [email protected].

BINKLEY READERS -- JESUS: A REVOLUTIONARY BIOGRAPHY:

The Binkley Readers will discuss John Dominic Crossan's Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography at our next meeting, Friday, September 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the church li-brary. Crossan describes what we can really know about the life of Jesus, using the tools of contempo-rary historians. This book may be of interest to many in our congre-gation, so we want to give you all a special invita-tion to read the book and join us on September 11. Paul Lindsay will lead the discussion. Binkley Readers always welcomes new participants at any of our meetings, on the second Friday of each month.

Then come to the Youth Choir Pizza Kickoff Party in the St. Francis Courtyard at 5pm on September 20 to find out how. We’ll unveil plans for the 2015-2016 sea-son, and perhaps most importantly have a time to hear from you about your hopes and dreams for this essential part of the Binkley Baptist Church Music Ministry.

All Youth and their parents are invited. Be on the lookout for your personal email invitation. If you have questions in the meantime, don’t hesitate to contact Daniel at 919-942-4964, ext. 24.

On the Sunday of Gay Pride Weekend (September 27) we will host members of the TGMC during our morn-ing worship service. The chorus, under the leadership of Artistic Director Dr. Jay Pierson, will sing selections from their repertory and will also join with the Binkley Chancel Choir for the anthem at the offertory.

The TGMC celebrates their 20th Anniversary this season, and is delighted to return to Binkley where they gave their debut concert all those years ago.

The music ministry is delighted that we are THE only church in the Triangle to host the chorus during Pride, and feel absolutely blessed to have reconnected with them on this significant anniversary year. Please invite your friends and family, and help spread the word about this great service at Binkley.

A NEW LOOK FOR THE KITCHEN ENTRANCE! A welcoming and long overdue change is coming to Binkley's kitchen entrance. Our brick sidewalks have served us well for decades but they are no longer safe and sustainable. For many in our com-munity, this entrance is the gateway to church and community activities. It is important that this en-trance reflect the concern for safety, appropriate use of resources and welcoming appearance that the people of Binkley value.

The Grounds Committee has carefully researched options that will provide a safe, accessible, finan-cially affordable and aesthetically pleasing entrance to our church and Council recently approved their recommendation. This fall the sidewalks leading to the south side doors will be renovated with brick bordered concrete similar to the new sidewalk lead-ing to the Meals on Wheels entrance. There will be some landscaping changes for a more unified appear-ance and to help direct visitors to the entrance. The rose garden will remain unchanged. The patio out-s ide the lounge wil l remain brick.

Any change to a building as beloved as Binkley can be difficult for many. We hope you will all appreci-ate the need for this renovation and embrace the new look as a positive change for our building and the safety of the people who come here. --Janet O'Neal on behalf of the Grounds Committee

BINKLEY HOMECOMING OPEN

In recognition of and support for Binkley's First Homecoming Celebration, the much anticipated Occasional Binkley Open will be named in honor of our First Homecoming. The Homecoming Open will be played Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at the Southwick Golf Course near Swepsonville. We will gather at 9:30am for team selection. The first tee time is 10:00 am.

The Homecoming Open fee is $30 (make checks out to Joe Clontz; can be paid at the Tournament) and includes green fees, cart and a hot dog and drink at the turn. Information, registration and directions are available from Joe Clontz:(919-969-4517); [email protected]. Registration deadline is Sunday, September 20. Join us for fun!

PASTORAL ENTRANCES AND EXITS

For those who were unable to attend in late July, the Transition Team invites you to another opportunity for congregational conversation around “Pastoral En-trances and Exits.” Join us on Sunday, October 4 f r o m 4 - 6 p m . P l e a s e R S V P t o [email protected].

Join together to remember the pastoral and ministe-rial staff who have served our congregation in its first 57 years. We will use a timeline of staff members, have a chance to reflect, capture memories by posting them on the timeline, celebrate, and give thanks for all that has been. The session concludes with a time to ritually give thanks for, celebrate, heal, and let go of those past corporate and personal experiences that are unnecessary ballast as our Church journeys into the future.

Transition Journey: Channel Markers...

Excerpts from the log of the good ship Binkley Transition:

After assembling and organizing the crew in February, March, and into April, we set sail. With strong winds and following seas in May, we made sure and speedy progress, engaging in a well-attended May-mester conversation series. We gave focus to our chal-lenges, our heritage, our mission, leadership needs, and core values.

The open seas of spring gave way to the doldrums of summer, yet, with the urging of Captain Marcus and the energies of an able crew, good progress has been made. The Transition team led a heritage event in late July urging remembrance of pastoral entrances and exits, (an event that will be repeated in October), and are in the midst of facilitating more than a dozen focus group conversations through-out the congregation. So far we have learned from these groups that our vessel is stable and quite sea-worthy. There is high satisfaction with Binkley as a spiritual home, great appreciation for our interim leadership, a variety of specific hopes for our future, and clear-minded understanding of the changes within and around us. The pace of our journey has, so far, been deemed agreeable, though a yearning to know what is on the other side of the horizon wills the jour-ney onward.

Captain Marcus has assembled a Mission Statement writing group, and their enthusiasm will be met with good material collected from our May-mester conversations.

After our May-mester conversations about lay leadership and subsequent interviews with current and former leaders, the Transition Team submitted a full report of our findings to the Church Council and the Board of Deacons about identifying, equipping, and supporting lay leadership, deacon elections, and congregational decision-making.

The fall schedule is ambitious, with great energy already swirling around our Homecoming on September 20 (James Forbes will be preaching and there will be dinner on the grounds!). We will honor our mission connections on Wednesday nights, mid-September to mid-November. The implications for the future of our journey will be discerned as more sailors are mustered to assist in navigation.

Reminder: the Transition Team members are: Marcus McFaul, Matthew Ripley Moffitt, Priscilla Bratcher, Charles Coble, Tonya Hamm, Gary Stutts, Jerry VanSant, Sonnie VanSant, Katherine Walker, and Ken Williams. An email sent to [email protected] will reach all Transition Team members, and, unless the writer gives other in-structions, we treat all such communications as confidential (that is, helpful information for the Transition Team's re-flection but not for wider conversation.)

“The journey continues as we go boldly and faithfully into our future in God.”

CHRISTIAN FORMATION OPPORTUNITIES—FALL 2015

Adult Church School Classes—Starting September 13

Just Economics, Just Connections, Right Now, Lounge Peace & Justice Action Group, facilitating

This class has its roots in the monthly discussions of Binkley’s Peace & Justice Action group. Local is-sues of justice and injustice abound. Becoming informed about those issues enables us to be part of the solutions which lead to justice. Susan Rogers will ground this semester’s class in thoughtful bibli-cal study. Following her opening two sessions, various Binkley and other community leaders will ad-dress specific issues and speak about their involvement in bringing justice to bear on those issues. The topics include specific efforts to address local poverty, affordable housing, a living wage, human traf-ficking, and programs on behalf of children. Rather than feeling overwhelmed by big problems, we seek to be inspired by stories of those who tackling the problems on the local level. Join us.

The Earth, Our Home: Thinking Aloud, Sunroom Bob Phillips and Charles Coble, Co-facilitators

This class has developed from a sense of urgency that our Earth has become endangered by human thoughtlessness—and that we are called by our Creator to work towards its mending. Initially, we’ll ground our discussion by considering what an agrarian reading of the Bible looks like. Then through dialog with wisdom figures like Wendell Berry and Thomas Berry, as well as theologians like Bill McKibbens, Sallie McFague, and Norman Wirzba –we’ll continue to explore a basis for acting on be-half of justice for Earth and her creatures, as well as discuss practical ways to get there.

Living with Grief and Loss: Mine, and Others, Room 17 Meredith Bratcher and Nape Baker, Co-facilitators

Six Sessions, October 4-November 11 You are invited to join us in exploring the varieties of grief, our own understandings of this profound aspect of human life, and some ways we can skillfully offer support to one another in particular times of grief. Some readings will be provided, as grounding for discussion; but our main resource is the life experience and reflections together of the group. This six-session exploration begins on Sunday, Oct. 4, and goes through Sunday, Nov. 11. The co-facilitators are chaplains, Nape Baker and Meredith Bratcher, speaking from a depth of life and ministry experience. Everyone is welcome.

Mindful Parenting, Room 18 Megan and Miles Highsmith, Co-facilitators

Each week, the group discusses ideas about parenting from current resources. The simple format in-cludes the following: prayer, brief check-in, summary of the book or article, and discussion on pre-pared questions. Parents, grandparents, and anyone are welcome! After all, we "parent" ourselves, too!

ESL Bible Study Class, Room 16 Maria Palmer, teacher

This class is designed for those learning English as a second language and interested in Bible Study. Participants will learn vocabulary and share from their own cultures and histories about why the sto-ries are important. Citizenship issues are also addressed.
