Guns save many American lives every day.

While an exact number of Defensive Gun Uses

is nearly impossible to calculate (most are notreported), studies have suggested that number

ranges from a few hundred thousand to over

three million per

year. A ground-

breaking 1995

study by Dr. Gary

Kleck of Florida

State University

estimated the

number at over 2.5 million

annually. This

research was con rmed a year later by the Police

Foundation in a National Institute of Justice funded

study. These studies were done in the mid-90’s, at

a time during which defensive gun carry was more

limited. Since 1990 the number of “shall-issue”

states has increased from 16 to 40, and more are

on the way. With more Americans lawfully carrying

guns, it can reasonably be assumed that theseguns are being used more often in self-defense.

Our estimate of 2,191 is based on a very

conservative number of 800,000 uses. That is less

than one third of the number from Dr. Kleck’s study.

Based on that estimate and most other studies on

the topic, OVER 2,191 Americans use guns for a

defensive purpose every day.

That means over 2,191 Americans were able

to prevent a crime and possibly save their lives, just today, because they had a gun. The only

conclusion that can be rationally reached is that

guns save thousands of lives every year.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG), New

York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s pet project,

recently launched a national propaganda effort andcorresponding website called xgunchecks.org. While

the premise of improving the accuracy of the NICS

system is laudable, the true anti-gun message can be

seen when we look past

their costume. MAIG’s

rolling billboard truck

features a count of the

number of people they

claim are murdered with

guns on one side and astatistic image claiming

34 of those murders

happen daily on the other

side. Unsurprisingly, their

numbers appear to be infl ated when compared with

the latest Department of Justice statistics available

weaponstab.cfm). Taking their suggested rate of 34

per day for a year, the overall number of gun murders

they suggest is more than 10% higher than thegovernment’s latest overall number for gun homicides.

Homicide also includes justi able shootings, hence

the real number of actual criminal murders is even

smaller. Nonetheless, their literature and messaging

shows their true colors: support for extremist anti-gun,

anti-self-defense policies with the goal of making all

Americans suffer the indignities of New York City style

gun control.

THIS IS NOT A FIGHT WE CANAFFORD TO LOSE!

Your contribution to support this effort to counter

Mayor Bloomberg’s war on gun is needed now!

Every day.

propaganda truck.

Bloomberg & MAIG:

Looking Past the CostumeWhile hiding behind the costume idea of xing

the NICS system, the list of policies MAIG really

supports, according to their own website, includes

a variety of things that many would nd shocking:

• They vociferously oppose right-to-carry

reciprocity, backing the idea that states should

be able to have outright bans on the carrying of guns for self-defense.

• They support a federal gun registration scheme

that would allow all law enforcement to track and

record every gun transaction or purchase.

• They want to abolish gun shows in every state

across the nation.

• They want to ban the most commonly usedsporting rifl es and defensive handguns in

America by declaring them “Assault Weapons,”

and ban the standard capacity magazines that

go into these rearms to make those that remain

in civilian hands less effective.

THESE ARE NOT REASONABLE REGULATIONS.

Help keep uson the road!
