Como, città d’arteComo, capoluogo della provincia, posta alla fine del ramo occidentale del Lario, è ricca di monu-menti artistici realizzati in epoche diverse.Questo itinerario vi permetterà di vedere le mura medievali, qualche monumento romanico e baroc-co, la suggestiva Piazza del Duomo con il Brolet-to e la splendida cattedrale, il teatro neoclassico, il razionalista “Palazzo Terragni”, Piazza Volta e di percorrere le antiche strade del centro storico.

La città fuori dalle muraQuesto itinerario vi permette di conoscere quella parte di città che si è andata sviluppando a partire dal XIX secolo lungo la sponda occidentale, fuori dalle mura cittadine. Partendo dai giardini di Villa Olmo, da cui si gode uno stupendo panorama sulla città, inizia la passeggiata romantica fra il lago e le belle ville neoclassiche circondate da lussureggianti giardini. Alla fine della passeggiata si attraversa il quartiere razionalista con i suoi monumenti nove-centeschi dalle linee essenziali e si visita il tempio voltiano, museo dedicato agli studi che Alessandro Volta ha fatto durante tutta la sua vita.

Como, città della setaComo è sempre stata famosa per la lavorazione della seta, ancora oggi i più famosi stilisti del mondo acquistano a Como i tessuti per le loro creazioni. Noi vi faremo visitare il museo della seta, dove sono raccolti antichi macchinari che riescono a raccontare la storia economica e so-ciale di questa città. Nel museo didattico della seta di Como si possono conoscere le varie fasi della lavorazione che, in passato, si realizzavano nel comasco: dall’allevamento del baco da seta alla filatura, tessitura, colorazione e stampa, fino alla creazione del prodotto finito.Possibilità di visitare un’esposizione di prodotti in seta e di fare acquisti.

PROVINCIA DI COMO

Lago e MontiL’itinerario inizia salendo a Brunate con la funicolare per ammirare dal-l’alto il panorama della città, del lago e delle montagne circostanti.Brunate è situato sulla cima di una delle colline che circondano la città di Como (m. 900) e gode di una superba posizio-ne panoramica; all’inizio del XX secolo, fu uno dei luoghi di villeggiatura più caro all’alta società milanese.Al ritorno, una crociera di un’ora con un’imbarcazione pubblica o privata vi permetterà di ammirare alcune delle ville famose che si affacciano al lago, circondate da parchi stupendi.

Durata: 3 ore

Crociera sul LagoPartenza da Como, verso le dieci, con il battello pubblico per raggiun-gere il centro lago. Durante le due ore di navigazione, la guida illustra tutto ciò che si vede lungo il percorso. Sosta a Tremez-zo per la visita della Villa Carlotta e del suo magnifico giardino, ricco di più di 500 essenze diverse. All’interno della villa, si potranno ammirare le opere di scultura e pittura di grandi artisti del periodo neo-classico. Trasferimento in battello a Bellagio, “la perla del lago” e visita del Borgo. Tempo libero per pranzo ed eventuale shopping. Ritorno a Como con battello o aliscafo.

N.B. Lo stesso itinerario può essere effettuato anche con motoscafo pri-vato.

Centro lago

Bellagio la Perla del lago

Visita di Villa Carlotta a Tremezzo e dei suoi famosi giardini, splendidi in ogni stagione, ma eccezionali durante il periodo di fioritura delle azalee (aprile-maggio). Con imbarcazione privata, breve crociera in centro lago fino all’ Isola Comacina e visita della storica Villa Balbianello, oggi proprietà FAI, posta su un promontorio in straordi-naria posizione panoramica. Continuazione della crociera fino a Bellagio, dove, dopo un breve giro orientativo, ci sarà tempo libero per il pranzo e lo shopping.

Durata: intera giornata (6-8 ore)

Visita del Borgo di Bellagio con la bella basilica romanica di San Giacomo e le suggestive scalinate, ricche di suggestioni e di notevoli scorci panoramici. Rilassante passeggiata sul lungola-go per raggiungere l’ingresso di Villa Melzi e visitare i giardini creati all’inizio del XIX secolo in una spettaco-lare posizione panoramica sul centro lago. Villa Melzi fu costruita nel 1808 dall’architetto Albertolli e rispecchia quindi il gusto dell’epoca, è una dimora neoclassica dal-le eleganti linee architettoniche, circondata da un giar-dino all’inglese ricco di molte varietà di alberi esotici.

Campione d’ItaliaQuesta escursione vi permette di conoscere una cittadina, situata sulle sponde del lago di Lugano, che ha la particolarità di essere italiana, ma com-pletamente circondata da territorio svizzero. Dagli anni Trenta del XX sec.è famosa per il suo elegante casinò, ma possiede anche monumenti artistici di grande importanza. Visiteremo il santuario di Santa Maria dei Ghirli con i suoi straordinari cicli pittorici risalenti al Trecento, Quattrocento e Cinque-cento ed il minuscolo oratorio di S. Pietro, situato al centro del paese.

Durata: 3 ore max

N.B. Questa escursione può essere completata con la visita di Lugano o di qualche altra interessante cittadina del Canton Ticino. In tal caso diventa un’escursione di giornata intera (6-8 ore)

Capolavori del Barocco in Valle IntelviLa valle Intelvi è riconosciuta coma la patria dei famosi Magistri Cuma-cini e ha monumenti di notevole importanza artistica, immersi in una natura di straordinaria bellezza. Visiteremo la parrocchiale di Laino, trionfo di stucchi ed af-freschi eseguiti dai più importanti artisti loca-li.Pranzeremo in un locale caratteristico con specialità del posto, ammireremo la Valsolda, il lago di Lugano e la catena delle Alpi da uno dei posti più spettacolari della valle, a Lanzo Intelvi, e chiuderemo l’itinerario con la chiesa di S. Maria di Scaria, capolavoro rococò dei fratelli Carloni.

Romanico e Rinascimentale in alto lagoL’estrema parte settentrionale del lago è meno conosciuta, ma non meno interessante: possiede, infatti, un complesso di monumenti artisti di grande bellezza, situati in angoli incantevoli dal punto di vista panoramico. Questo itine-rario vi porterà a Gravedona, splendida cittadina adagiata fra lago e monti, sede in passato del capoluogo delle Tre Pievi (Gravedona, Dongo e Sorico), con la pos-sibilità di visitare un gioiello dell’arte romanica, la chiesa di Santa Maria del Tiglio caratterizzata da un originale campanile a forma ottagonale, posto al centro della facciata. La passeggiata lungo il lago e fra i vicoli vi farà scoprire angoli suggestivi ed imponenti edifici come il cinquecentesco Palazzo Gallio. Dopo un pranzo ristoratore, si visiterà la chiesa di Santa Maria delle Gra-zie, situata nella parte alta del paese, in ottima posizione panoramica. Fu una chiesa agostiniana dell’epoca rinascimentale di cui conserva gli archi trasversali e uno stupendo corredo pittorico.

Lecco, racchiusa tra famose e suggestive montagne (Grigne e Resegone),si trova sulla sponda sud orientale del Lario, dove l’Adda ritorna a scorrere nel suo alveo di fiume, nei pressi di Pescarenico. Nel centro storico si visitano i resti delle mura tre-centesche di Azzone Visconti e le antiche piazze del Mercato e del Teatro, nonché la basilica di S. Nicolò con il suo altissimo campanile, affaccia-ta sull’antico porto. Alessandro Manzoni, illustre lombardo, trascorse gran parte della sua giovi-nezza nella villa del Caleotto a Lecco e proprio nei dintorni trovò la giusta ambientazione del suo celeberrimo romanzo “I Promessi Sposi”. Questa villa, ora visitabile, è diventata una casa-museo.

Lecco, città manzoniana

Sull’antico confine tra la Serenissima ed il Ducato di Milano si trova la selvaggia valle San Martino.Ne è parte il comune di Vercurago dove, nel-la frazione di Somasca, su uno sperone di roccia dominante lago, fiume e rilievi circostanti, gli an-tichi resti di una cinta di protezione militare sono detti “il castello dell’Innominato”. L’escursione, che permette comodamente di raggiungere que-sto luogo manzoniano, tocca le 11 cappellette costruite nell’Ottocento per creare un singolare Sacro Monte a ricordo della cinquecentesca figu-ra di San Gerolamo Emiliani, fondatore dell’Ordine dei Padri Somaschi.

Valle San Martino

Sulla sponda destra del fiume Adda, un sentiero pedonale/ciclabile dal lago di Garlate fino a Paderno consente un contatto diretto con l’ambiente fluviale. All’altezza di Imbersa-go si trova, ancora in funzione, il traghetto manuale progettato 5 secoli fa da Leonardo da Vinci. Notevole è anche il santuario della Madonna del Bosco, domi-nante il fiume dalla cima di un poggio boscoso; la sua pianta, a forma di doppio ottagono, ripercorre la tradi-zione quattrocentesca, tipicamente lombarda, di edifici dedicati al culto Mariano.Durata: Mezza giornata (un tratto a piedi o in bicicletta)

Il Fiume Adda

PROVINCIA DI LECCO

Percorrendo la strada che costeggia la riva orientale del Lario, s’incontra Ab-badia Lariana dove è visitabile un singolare reperto d’archeologia industriale, ancora ben conservato e diventato museo civico: il Setificio Monti. Subito dopo si trova Mandello del Lario, popolosa cittadina in amena posizione ai piedi della Grigna Settentrionale, con la sua impor-tante fabbrica della Moto Guzzi, aperta nel 1921, dove è visitabile il suo particolare museo.In centro lago,Varenna offre al visitatore un’atmosfera ma-gica con un caratteristico abitato, tra lago e monte, percorso da scalotte e stretti passaggi. Poco distante, Villa Monastero, duecentesco convento di monache, trasformato in residenza patrizia e circondato da splendidi giardi-ni, assicura al visitatore momenti indimenticabili. L’escursione può prendere l’intera giornata continuando fino a Colico, dove si trova l’Abbazia di Piona, straordinaria testimonianza di fede, arte e natura.

La sponda orientale del lago

Una mulattiera in forte pendenza conduce da Varenna al castello di Vezio, posto in splendida posizione panoramica. Continuando lungo l’antico sentiero, che percorre la sponda orientale a mezza costa regalando viste mozzafiato sulla parte nord del lago, si raggiunge Bellano dove è possibile visitare l’interessante parrocchiale dei SS. Nazaro e Celso, costruita dai Maestri Cumacini nel XIV secolo. A Bellano non si può mancare la visita dell’Orrido, una profonda gola naturale ricca di anfratti misteriosi.

Trekking in centro lago

La Valsassina sovrasta Lecco ed è circondata dalle splendide cime delle Gri-gne e del Resegone; è il paradiso degli sport durante tutto l’anno. Infinite sono le attività che vi si possono praticare, dalla semplice camminata all’arrampicata su roccia e ai percorsi su sci e racchette. La bellezza della na-tura è l’attrazione principale, ma non mancano notevoli monumenti artistici. Mondo Turistico, in collaborazione con le guide di montagna autoriz-zate, può organizzare qualsiasi tipo d’escursione in Valsassina.

The Eastern coastlineAt Abbadia Lariana, on the lake’s eastern shores, we can visit a remarkable example of industrial archaeology - the Monti Silk spinning mill which, a well preserved structure which has now become a museum. Further south, the more densely populated town of Mandello del Lario is in a charming spot at the foot of the nor-thern Grigna mountain range where the famous Moto Guzzi motorbike factory museum can be vi-sited. Towards the central lake area, the characteri-stic town of Varenna is an enchanting spot with its narrow cobbled streets and steps and breathtaking views. In Varenna, the 13th century Villa Monastero, originally conceived as a convent for nuns of the Cistercian order before being transformed into an aristocratic residence, boasts beautiful gardens and is worth a visit.

This excursion can become a full day one if you wish to continue as far as Colico, where you can visit Piona Abbey.

Trekking in the lake centreA steep uphill mule path leads from Varenna to Vezio Castle, in a beautiful panoramic spot overlooking the old town and the central lake area. From here, an old track runs along and abo-ve the eastern coastline offering breathtaking views over the northern branch of the lake. This track takes you to Bellano where you can visit the parish church of Saints Nazaro and Celso built in the 14th century by the “Ma-sters of Como”. You mustn’t miss a visit to the Waterfalls here in Bellano.Durata:tion: half day (3-4 hours)

Valsassina, amongst sport and natureThe Valsassina valley behind Lecco with its impressive peaks of the Grigne mountain range and the Resegone mountain is a sporting paradise all year round thus offering numerous sporting activities from a simple hike to rock-climbing to skiing. The landscape and natural beauty of this valley is the major feature but there are also several artistic mo-numents that can be admired.Mondo Turistico can organize any type of excur-sion in the Valsassina valley thanks to our collabo-ration with licensed Mountain Walks Guides.

Lecco - the town of Alessandro ManzoniLecco, with its dramatic rugged mountains (Grigne and Resegone) as a backdrop, is at the tip of the south-eastern branch of Lake Como, where the River Adda regains its course near Pescarenico.The visit of the historic centre includes the remains of the 14th century walls built by Azzone Vi-sconti, the old market squares, the Theatre as well as the Basilica of St. Nicolò with its impressive bell tower over-looking the old harbour. Alessandro Manzoni , a famous Lombard novelist, grew up in a villa in the Caleotto di-strict. Of Lecco. This is the area that was used as a set-ting for his famous novel “I promessi Sposi” (“The Betrothed”). Nowadays the villa as been transformed into a museum.

San Martino ValleyThe rural San Martino valley is where there the boundary area between Mi-lan’s dukedom and the Serenissima Venetian Republic once lay. The village of Vercurago is in this valley where, in the hamlet of Somasca, on the rocky spur that dominates the lake, river and surrounding peaks, the remains of old military boundary walls known as “Il Castello dell’Innominato” (The Castle of the Unnamed) can be seen. The relatively easy trek to this Manzonian spot, takes you past eleven 19th century chapels which re-create a remarkable Holy Mountain in memory of the 16th cen-tury St. Jerome Emilian, founder of the Somaschi Fathers.Durata:tion: 2-3 hours

The River AddaOn the right bank of the River Adda a pedestrian/cycle path leading from Garlate to Paderno borders the river. At Imbersago you can see the manual ferry designed by Leonardo da Vinci five centuries ago which still functions to this day. You can also visit the Sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna of the Woods which overlooks the river from a hill above the woods of chestnut trees. The sanctuary, with its double octagon shape, is a typical example of 15th century Lombard religious buildings dedi-cated to Our Lady. .Durata:tion: half day (partially on foot or by bike)

LECCO PROVINCE

Romanesque & Renaissance in the northern branch of Lake Como

The northern part of Lake Como is, like the rest of the lake, very scenic but slightly more “off the beaten track”. Our itinerary takes us to visit Gravedona on the north-western coastline, once a very important town from a religious point of view. We visit a true gem of Romanesque architecture, the church of Santa Maria del Tiglio with its octago-nal shaped bell tower strikingly placed in the middle of its façade. We then take a stroll along the lakesi-de promenade and town lanes. After lunch, we visit the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie which is in a prominent position above the town with wonderful views across the lake. This church used to belong to Agostinian monks during the Renaissance period – the wooden beamed arches and magnificent frescos date back to that period.

Baroque masterpieces in the Intelvi Valley

The Intelvi Valley which lies between Lake Como and Lake Lugano, is famous not just for the beautiful scenery it has to offer but because it was the homeland of the so-called Intelvi masters, a group of architects, stone-cutters, builders, stucco workers, decorators, artists and sculptors whose work was carried out both in their valley and in the rest of Euro-pe. Our visit takes us to the Parish church in Laino with its rich stucco work and frescos of the most important artists. Lunch in a typical local restaurant followed by photo opportunities from the “Balcony of Italy” in Lanzo d’Intelvi from where we have brea-thtaking views over Lake Lugano, the Valsolda and the Alps. Our tour ends with a visit of a masterpiece of the Rococo style, the church of San-ta Maria di Scaria with the works of two great artists who were brothers, Diego and Carlo Carloni.

The central Lake areaA tour of Villa Carlotta, the “symbol” of Lake Como, a chance to see both its interiors and its famous gardens, spectacu-lar at any time of year but even more so in April and May when the azaleas and rhodo-dendrons are in full bloom. Cruise the lake by private boat, circling the only island, Isola Co-macina before proceeding to Villa Balbianello. Currently an Italian National Trust property, it lies on the tip of a promontory with exceptio-nally spectacular views of the lake. Continue to Bellagio for a brief orienta-tion tour and free time for shopping.

Bellagio, the “Pearl of the Lake”In this itinerary, we explore Bellagio, the “pearl of the lake” which has often been described as the prettiest village in Europe with its charming historic centre called the “Borgo”. A chance to see the attractive Romanesque church dedicated to St.James and the lanes and beautiful steps of the Salita Serbelloni. We continue with a stroll along the pretty promenade as far as the Villa Melzi to visit the very first English style gardens created on Lake Como in the early 19th centu-ry. The villa, a perfect example of Neoclassical architecture, was built in 1808 for a wealthy aristocrat from Milan and was designed by Giocondo Albertolli, a leading architect of his day.

Campione d’ItaliaThis excursion takes us to the shores of Lake Lugano in Switzerland (passpor-ts required) to Campione d’Italia, an Italian enclave which became famous after the building of its Casino in 1930. The town has several important artistic monuments and our visit includes the Sanctuary of the “Madonna dei Ghirli” with its fascinating cycle of frescos dating back to the 14th , 15th and 16th centuries. We also visit the tiny oratory in the centre of town dedicated to St. Peter.

Duratation: Max. 3 hours

N.B. This excursion can be extended to a full day by combining it with a visit of Lugano, or any other town of interest in the Swiss Ticino region.

Lakes & mountainsA funicular ride to Brunate, a hill-top town with magnificent views over Como, the lake and its surrounding mountains. The ride lasts just seven minu-tes as the funicular railway climbs steeply up the mountainside. Brunate was a po-pular tourist resort during the early part of the 20th century, particularly with the nearby Milanese aristocracy. We return to the lakeside to embark on a boat (public or private) for a cruise of the southernmost part of the lake, admiring the many villas and gardens that dot the shoreline.

Duratation: 3 hours

Lake CruiseDepart from Como at around 10am. by public boat for a ride along the south western branch of the lake as far as the beautiful central area. During the two hour cruise, your guide will point out all the various places of interest. Disembark at Tremezzo to visit Villa Carlotta and its splendid garden with more than 500 diffe-rent plants. Inside the villa there are many interesting sculptures and paintings by the most important artists of the Neoclassical period. Transfer to Bellagio by boat and visit the “Borgo”, the town’s historic centre followed by free time for lunch and shopping. Return to Como by boat or hydrofoil.

NB: This itinerary is also available with a private boat.

Como city of the artComo, the lake’s capital town, surrounded by hills and mountains, lies on the tip of the south western branch. It boasts several artistic monuments from different historical periods. This itinerary includes the medieval walls surrounding the historic centre. As we stroll through the ancient streets in the heart of the town, we can admire beautiful Romanesque and Ba-roque churches, Piazza Volta and Piazza Duomo (with its charming old Town Hall building and its characte-ristic bell tower). The highlight of the tour is a visit of the superb 600-year old Cathedral. Behind the Cathe-dral is the masterpiece of modern Rationalist art – the “Palazzo Terragni”.

The city outside the wallsWith this itinerary, you will have a chance to see both the part of the city which lies outside the medieval walls built from the 19th century and Co-mo’s Neoclassical villas. Our walk starts from the Villa Olmo with its ornate garden and magnificent views of the lake and town. We continue along lakeside promenade past the many magnificent neoclassical villas. Further on we will see the modern recreational area of Como with its Rationalist style buildings. We also visit the so-called “Voltian Temple” which houses a small museum dedicated to Como’s most illustrious citizen, Alessandro Volta, the great scientist who invented the battery.

Duration: 2-3 hours Como the silk city

Como has been one of the most important towns for silk manufacturing for many centuries and to this very day, Como’s silk is still considered to be amongst the best for quality: The world’s leading fashion designers buy their silk here. This itinerary includes a visit to the Silk Museum where you will be fascinated by the old machinery from bygone times such as the hand-looms. Learn about the various steps of silk production from the breeding of silk worms to the processes of weaving, dyeing, and printing and completion of the finished product. We can also include a visit to a silk store with time to purchase goods.Duratation: 2-3 hours
