Classroom Guidance
The counselor teaches lessons for all students. Topics include personal safety, study skills, social skills, assertiveness training, communication skills, decision making, and problem solving. These topics are presented through class discussion, video presentations, role plays, literature, and group activities.
Small Group Guidance/Counseling
The counselor meets with small groups, usually 4-6 students, regarding specific areas of concern.
Guidance groups are for students who need help with developmental life skills such as social skills, assertiveness, or study skills.
Counseling groups are for students who have special concerns such as divorce, death of a loved one, or other family issues.
Individual CounselingThe counselor meets with individual students regarding difficulties with academics, behavior, or family issues. Referrals can be made by teachers, parents, or the students themselves.
Parents can make referrals by calling or conferencing with the counselor or filling out a Parent Referral Form (request one from your child’s teacher).
Students may make an appointment by writing a note to the counselor and putting it in her mailbox located outside her office.
Parent Conferences
Parents may request a conference with the counselor by calling to set up an appointment.
The counselor is also available to attend parent/teacher conferences.
As a member of Dorsett Shoals’ Student Support Team, the counselor attends meetings along with the child’s teacher, his/her parent, and an administrator. The purpose of the Student Support Team is to discuss the academic or behavior difficulties a student may be having.
