The Grymes Memorial School fourth grade class watched a series of Global Lives videos of Edith Kaphuka, a 13-year-old student at Domasi Mission Primary School in ZombaDistrict, Malawi (Global Lives Project shoot in 2007). The oldest of four girls, Edith has many responsibilities at her home in Ngwale Village, such as fetching water, cleaning the dishes, and gardening. Her little sister, Memory, is her best friend; when the two are together, they are nearly inseparable. While Edith and her family are Yao, they more readily speak Chichewa, Malawi's national language. This book describes the similarities and differences between a kids life in Malawi and the United States. The photos of Malawi are taken by Jason J Price and can be found on his Global Lives Project Malawi Flickr Site.

Edith is a thirteen year old girl from Malawi. Edith and I are alike and different in many ways.

Edith and I are alike in many ways; we both have homework, play at recess and our schools are brick. Also, we both wear collared shirts and sandals. We also both have friends and play with them when we can.

Edith and I are also different. She has a straw roof, a house made of mud, no doors and little windows but I have a shingled roof, a metal and stone house, four doors and lots of windows. Her house is dark and has no sinks whereas I have a bright house with many sinks. The headmaster at her school is mean. The headmaster at my school is nice. Edith eats corn meal, beans, and beans. I eat goldfish, pizza, and hotdogs.

even though Edith lives in Africa, I was surprised we had some things in common. Our lives are mostly different because she lives in Africa. We may be a half a world but we can still relate.

Do you know what it’s like to be an African girl? You will get to know because I am going to compare Edith, a 13 year old schoolgirl from Malawi, to me.

We are alike mostly in our ways of school and dress. First of all, we both go to school, play basketball, and learn different languages. Also, we both wear tennis shoes, a coat when it is cold, and change into after-school clothes. Lastly, we both do homework and have teachers (of course!), and also have assemblies.

Our lives aren’t perfectly alike, so I am going to highlight some differences in our lives. First of all, I’m a boy, and I take a bus to school, while Edith is a girl, and walks to her school. At school, Edith has a cowbell for a school bell, she has to sweep the hardened, dusty, dirty school grounds before school, she has a smaller backpack than me, and she has a larger classroom and class. Also, Edith has a suitcase for a dresser and has a school uniform. She also has dirt floors and talks in a different language at school than at home. Lastly, she is 3 YEARS older than me.

As I look back at our school and home life, I think that we are more different than alike.

Our live have some things in common. At school Edith and I sing and does exercises. When we get home we both have chores. After that we both have homework.

Also Edith and I have some things not in common. When Edith gets ready for school in the morning she uses a pic but I use a hairbrush, She does not have mirror in her house but I do in my house. She wears a school uniform when all I have to wear is a collared shirt for the Grymes dress code.

We have a lot of differences and similarities with each other. Even thought she lives in Malawi and I live in Orange we still have a lot in common .

Edith is a 13 year old girl who lives in Malawi Africa. We have some things in common because we are both girls but we have a loytof differences too.

Our lives are still very similar because we are both girls. We have the same type of clothes but they might look different. Our schools are both made out of brick and we play outside, eat, learn and have recess at school. She likes to play with her friends and so do I. We also have to wear sneakers to school. The thing we most have most in common is that we both have to watch and love our siblings.

Edith and I are also different in not many ways. She walks to school and take walks but I don’t to. In my house we have showers but she doesn’t have any . I have a dresser, she doesn’t . I wear socks and sneakers , she doesn’t. Edith has jobs to do but we just get right to learning. Sometimes she wears this scarf over her head and I don’t wear oe on my head. We are both similar and different In many ways. Even though she lives in Africa and I live in Virginia. And even though that we are separate lives we are still similar and different in some ways.

Even though some parts of our school day is different and the same. Edith has a long walk to school but I ride in a car. At Edith’s school it’s all girls but at my school it’s boy and girl. When Edith gets to school she does chores like sweeping. At my school when we come we do schoolwork. I have a book bag she has a purse. I have one person per desk she has three.

I expected that my life would be a lot different from Edith’s. I found out that we had a lot in common. We are especially alike because we both have responsibilities. She has to take care of her siblings just like I have to take care of my animals

Edith is an African girl from Malawi. I am a ten year old boy from the U.S.A. There are a lot of things that are alike and something's that are different in our lives.

Edith and I are alike because we both go to school and take care of our siblings. We both have backpacks for school, we both have a bell to tell us that it is over for playing time, and we both learn new language's. We also have to take care of our siblings. We both help them with homework and p[lay with them. Also we both have to help around the house. We also have chores like wash dishes.

Edith and I also have differentness in our lives. Edith has a suitcase of clothes but I have closets of clothes. She doesn’t have plumbing in her house but I do. At Edith’s school they do chores like sweeping but at our school we don’t. Her class has 34-36 kids and our class has 13 kids.

Even though I am a boy and Edith is a girl we still have a lot in common. We as have differences in our lives.

Edith is a girl from Malawi. She is 13 years old and goes to an all girl’s school. I will be comparing Edith’s life with my life.

Edith and I have a lot in common. We both use backpacks, have loud schools, play games, and our schools have a bell. At Edith’s school the kids do exercises, just like we do and we both skim for answers. We both wear dresses, shorts, and t-shirts. Her school uniform includes a collared blouse and I have to wear a collared shirt.

Edith and I are different in many ways too. For instance, my school is coed and her school is all girls. We have nice and newly painted rooms and she has simple rooms without a lot of paint. She does her homework with her friends and I do it by myself. Edith walks to school and I ride the bus to school. She has a baby sister and I have a big sister. Our clothes are different because she wears thin layers and I wear thin layers, but not allthetime. She has a uniform for school and I do not.

Edith and I have many differences and similarities. We are both girls but I live in the U.S.A. and she lives in Malawi. Even though we live in different parts of the world we still have a lot in common.

Edith and Me

There is a girl who lives in Malawi Africa. She is 13 years old and goes to school. My name is James and I go to school in Virginia U.S.A. We are alike and different.

One of our similarities is we both play basket ball. At Edith’s school they have a playground and we have a playground too. They also have assembly time. Edith wears socks and shoes and so do I .

We are different because she walks to and from school. My father brings me to school in his truck. Edith has a long breakfast but I have to eat my breakfast quickly. She has to do chores at school like sweeping the road and I don’t have chores at school. Edith wears a uniform everyday but I don’t. I bring everything to school in my backpack but Edith leaves her books at school.

Edith and I do some things the same and some things different. I admire all that Edith has to do. Life in Malawi seems to be really hard. I feel lucky to have the life I have.

Edith has eggs for breakfast and so do I. We both have recess at school. At my school we have assemblies and so does Edith. We both play basketball.

I carry my things in my bookbag but Edith leaves her stuff at school. Edith does exercises in the assembly but I do not. She wears white shoes every day. I wear colored tennis shoes. Edith lives in a mud hut but my house is made of vinyl.

Edith’s life is a lot harder than mine. We both go to school but she does not have the latest stuff. So I am glad that I have my life.

Edith is a 13 year old girl who lives in Malawi. I am a 10 year old boy who lives in Virginia. We have some similarities and some differences.

Edith and I are really alike in some ways. She likes basketball and so do I. She takes a class in a language other then her first language. That is like when I take Spanish class. At Edith's school she has assemblies and at my school, I have assemblies. She has recess and sits at a desk. So do I.

Edith and I are also really different. It is really obvious that Edith is a girl and I am a boy. Edith wears a dress and I wear shorts. I always ride the bus but Edith walks to school. Edith lives with a lot of people and I live with only 3 other people. I have electricity in my house but Edith has no electricity at her house.

I did not expect a 13 year old girl who lives in Africa to have some same things about my life . I did expect having some differences with Edith and I. It was a little hard comparing my life with Edith's.

Edith is a thirteen year old girl from Malawi, Africa. My class and I have been watching a series of video clips from a day in her life. Edith and I are alike and different from each other. I think it has been interesting to think about how what is the same and what is different about our lives.

Edith and I are alike in a lot of ways. Edith and I both like to play with my friends. Our classmates are also sometimes a little boisterous. In school, we both learn a different language. We are also both girls.

Edith and I are also different from each other. At my school, we have a smart board, at her school, they have a chalkboard. I have a lot of clothes and Edith has very few clothes. Edith wears a uniform of a yellow collared blouse with a green jumper; I can wear a collared shirt and skinny jeans.

Edith and I have a lot of similarities and differences. We are both girls, but we are half-way around the world from each other. After thinking about everything I know about Edith and comparing it to my life, I think we are more alike than different.

Edith is a girl in Malawi, Africa. She is growing up in a village. She has many siblings. I am comparing and contrasting her life to mine.

Edith and I have more similarities than I thought. For instance, we both have brick houses. We learn Spanish in school. In school we go to assemblies. We both play sports like basketball.

Although we have many similarities we also have many differences. She has school uniforms but I don’t. We get to school at different times and she walks but I take the bus to school. She is a 13 year old girl but I am a 9 year old boy.

Edith and I have many similarities and differences. Although she lives in Africa you’d be surprised about how many things we have in common.

I am ten years old girl from the U.S.A. Edith is a thirteen year old girl from Malawi. Although we are both girls we have many similarities and differences.

Edith and I have a sea between where we live, but we have many similarities. Edith gets her hair ready in the morning, so do I. We both raise our hands a lot in school. She loves to play games. I also love to play games though the games are very different from each other. Edith has chores, like washing the dishes. So do I. We both eat slow and drink hot tea. The thing we have most in common is that we are both girls.

Edith and I have many differences too. For instance, Edith has siblings, she has chores at school, and she walks to school. All of these things I don’t do or have! Edith shares a book with two other students. At my school each student gets their own book. At Edith’s house the light is very dim, because they don’t have electricity. At my house we have lights, and electricity. As you can see we have many differences too.

Yes Edith and I have our share of similarities and differences. I must remember Edith lives in Africa, I live in the U.S.A. and there are a lot of traditions and ways of life that are different. Similarities and differences are what make you, you! If everyone was the same it would make life boring, and life shouldn’t be boring for anyone.
