Grundfos in the future
• Today most of our products contains software. Most of them can be updated on premise and a part of them can communicate with other devices.
• Tomorrow almost all devices are online, can be configured, updated and information as a service will be part of our service offerings.
• Grundfos will take the role as ISV (Independed Software Vendor) and that is new to us.
• Data as a product will be one of the cornerstones in our future offerings and Big Data one of our main sources in our future product development.

Background
The Grundfos Dormitory comprises 159 apartments with room for just over 200 students located on a prime site in the newly developed harbor area of the city right beside the marina. The building complies with the Danish Low-energy Class 2015 requirements, which demands a 25% reduction in energy consumption compared to standard regulations.Taken into use in the autumn of 2012Although technically involved in the project as the turnkey contractor, Danish company Sjælsø also acted as the project developer from the very start of the project, right from the purchase of the land for the building.

MeasurementsWhat is being measured?
In each apartment, 10 sensors measures the temperature, level of CO2 and relative humidity, electricity consumption, and heat via the radiators, as well as hot and cold water, including temperature, pressure and flow of both cold and warm water.
The same measurements are recorded for the building as a whole, plus technical installations in the basement, outside temperature, wind and solar level. A total of 3000 sensors.
What is the purpose
Motivation of and engaging the residents in minimising consumption while working towards continuous energy optimisation – all in close cooperation between Grundfos, the students, owners and local universities.

Data storage
• Sensors: 3.000 Pcs.
• Sampling rate: 5 sec
• Data set per day: 51.840.000
• Requires approx. 1 TB storage per Year
• Currently the data storage allocates 3,5 TB space.
• Microsoft Azure cloud solutions used for storage
• Currently only one the data storage (in Ireland) are used

Lessons learned / Pitfalls
Grundfos Dormitory
Grundfos IS - Digital Products
Lessons learned / Pitfalls
• Transport of big data volumes handled by using the “FedEx Protocol”
• Do not be afraid to collect too many data points. Today's noise is tomorrow's assets.
• If planned in advance, establishing all measurings are cheap. “It did not take longer to complete” quote by Sjælsø
• Be careful about which services that are selected, they may each have a price tag
• “Price of data storage in cloud is going against 0” quote Microsoft. - But you may pay for processing the data.
• In your planning be careful about dividing data in Cold, Warm and Hot store. When we started the Dormitory had a price tag of about DKK 25.000 / month. Now it is about DKK 2000.

Lessons learned / Pitfalls
• You can turn up/down your capacity and computer power on the fly. Yes, but you need to have some experienced people to handle it in the most efficient way.
• Price models are changing often. The Cloud providers have to learn their business as well as you do.
• In order to gain from the analytics and experience new insights it takes both some thesis in advance, good consultants and good data scientists.
• You have to consider very carefully about back up and which physical storage locations you selects. E.g: within EU or global.
• Security: Cloud solutions are in general very secure. It is when you grants access to users and internal staff the security is compromised.
• Time critical control loops and alarms are not suitable for Cloud solutions. You have at least a delay on 200 ms, but it depends heavily on selected datacenter and network

OPC UA
• OPC UA – Service-oriented Architecture for Industrial Applications
OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) is the
new standard of the OPC Foundation providing interoperability
in process automation and beyond. By defining
abstract services, OPC UA provides a service-oriented
architecture (SOA) for industrial applications – from
factory floor devices to enterprise applications. OPC UA
integrates the different flavors of the former OPC specifications
into a unified address space accessible with a
single set of services.

API
• API stands for Application Programming Interface
• An API expresses a software component in terms of its operations, inputs, outputs, and underlying types, defining functionalities that are independent of their respective implementations, which allows definitions and implementations to vary without compromising the interface. A good API makes it easier to develop a program by providing all the building blocks, which are then put together by the programmer.
• An API may be for a web-based system, operating system, or database system, and it provides facilities to develop applications for that system using a given programming language
•
