Dear Members of the Group Vocational Service Exchange

Team from Australia.

I would like to sincerely welcome you to Pennsylvania,

especially South Central Pennsylvania and Rotary District

7390, which you will get to know very well in the coming

weeks.

As you may know, the GVSE program (formerly GSE)

began in the 1960s and has made it possible for thousands

of business and professional team members to see what

few other travelers have experienced. Host country

Rotarians provide team members with a rich panorama

that examines the historical, professional, social,

industrial, agricultural, religious, governmental, and

political life of their country. Additionally, team members

enjoy the opportunity to learn how their vocation is

practiced in the host country and to participate in a service

project.

Indeed, the GVSE program affects team members so

deeply that we can say with confidence that this program

changes participants’ lives in a most beneficial way. I

have no doubt that this will be the case for you.

We have planned a wonderful but busy experience for

you. It is important for you to meet as many Rotarians

and families as possible during your visit. We know you

will enjoy your visits to our cultural and historic sites.

Arrangements have been made to meet your vocational

interests as well.

District 7390 GSE Committee Chairs Peg Sennett and

Amy Chamberlin and I are available to answer your

questions and to address any concern that might arise. We

in District 7390 intend to ensure that your visit will be a

very positive one for each of you

I am looking forward to meeting all of you soon.

In Rotary Service,

John G. Kramb

With great pleasure and excitement we welcome the

Group Vocational Service Exchange team, representing

District 9640, to our beautiful south central Pennsylvania.

The Rotarians of District 7390 have spent many hours

preparing for your visit. It is our hope that, over the four

weeks, you will experience life as we know it.

We have filled each day with cultural, educational,

professional and service opportunities to compare our two

lifestyles and help you understand what it is like to be an

American living and working in our part of Pennsylvania.

We welcome you into our homes to view us in our family

lives as mothers, fathers, sons and daughters. This

personal experience is perhaps the most unique

opportunity of this great program.

Best wishes for a wonderful exchange, many lasting

friendships, and a lifetime of memories.

GROUP VOCATIONAL SERVICE EXCHANGE A team of non-Rotarian business or professional men and women visit each other’s country for four weeks to study social, economic, business and cultural conditions, and to observe their own professions, while staying in the homes of Rotarians.

OBJECTIVES The Rotary Group Vocational Service Exchange Program is a unique educational experience, for young business and professional persons, designed to advance international understanding and goodwill through an extensive and rigorous program of international travel and participatory activities through:

Vocational Activities Cultural Experiences

Fellowship Opportunities Service Project Participation

Rotarian Involvement

A BRIEF HISTORY:

Europeans first came to Pennsylvania in the mid-1600’s.

At that time, Pennsylvania was inhabited by Native

American Indians. During the mid-1600’s, Pennsylvania

traded hands between the Swedish and the Dutch and was

finally controlled by the English in 1664.

Owned by the English, in 1681, King Charles II gave

William Penn a large area of land in return for a debt

owed to Penn’s Father. This land, now known as

Pennsylvania, came from the name “Penn’s Woodland.”

Penn had a vision for the land, which would result in

people of all nationalities and religious affiliations living

with equal rights and freedoms.

This desire for freedom, coupled with the vast resources of

the land and the progressive thinking of its inhabitants,

resulted in a state that was rich in diversity, economic

resources and political activity. Philadelphia, also known

as the “City of Brotherly Love,” was the site of many

important historic events in our country’s birth. Both the

Declaration of Independence (1776) and the Constitution

of the United States (1787-88) were written, signed and

ratified in Philadelphia.

Pennsylvania is divided into 67 counties, which are further

divided into municipalities that are either cities, boroughs,

or townships.

Pennsylvania is the 6th most populous of the 50 states. In

2010, total gross state product was $570 billon, ranking 6th

in the nation. If PA were an independent country, its

economy would rank as 18th largest in the world.

An important part of the Industrial Revolution, today

Pennsylvania combines its heavy industry with

technology, manufacturing, tourism and agriculture. The

state produces: mushrooms, apples, Christmas trees,

laying chickens, milk, corn, grapes, and horse breeding.

Our area of PA is considered the snack food capital of the

world with the production of chocolate (including Hershey

and M&M), pretzels and chips (including Utz and

Snyders-Lance).

Pennsylvania was also the site of much activity during the

Civil War (War of the North and the South 1861 – 1865).

Gettysburg was the site of a decisive Civil War battle in

1863, the same year that President Abraham Lincoln freed

the South’s slaves with his Emancipation Proclamation.

Pennsylvania:

Population 12.79 million as of 2014 census

State Capital: Harrisburg

Area: 46,000 square miles / 119,139km

State Animal: Whitetail Deer

State Flower: Mountain Laurel
