ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION HIGHLIGHTS May, 1994 – May, 2014 Annual Evaluations: In 29 years of full-time service to Western State Colorado University (1985-2014) as a professor, coach and

athletic director (20 years as A.D.), all annual evaluations were at the “Excellent/Outstanding” level except two that were at the “Commendable” level.

Context of accomplishments: Conducted during a very dynamic period in higher education and intercollegiate athletics in general, but even more-so in Colorado and at the institution served. This took place in a state with over ten years of draconian budget cuts in higher education, and during a time when the institution changed membership from the NAIA to the NCAA D-II and experienced enrollment challenges, as well as a conference that has expanded multiple times since 1992.

General Athletic Program Accomplishments 1994-2014 was collectively the most successful period in Mountaineer Athletic history at Western State Colorado University:

o 11 NCAA II National team championshipso 97 NCAA II National “Top Ten” team finishes o 32 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) team championships o Western State has placed in the “Top 44” of the Director’s Cup for NCAA D-II in each of the first 19 straight years of the

existence of the contest and in the “Top 25 in all, but one year. Western State is only one of four NCAA D-II institutions (out of over 300) to achieve this feat. Western State placed 5th three times and has 10 “Top 12” finishes. All sport programs at Western are responsible for these accomplishments and all but two sport programs have scored points for this contest multiple times through 2012 (two new sport programs added in 2012 are not included).

o 71 Individual National Championso 575 Individual All-Americans o Nearly every sport program has equaled or exceeded all-time performances since 1994, and most of them have exceeded all-

time performances multiple times. For those sport programs that have not exceeded all-time performances they have equaled or exceeded performance benchmarks higher than at any time in several decades.

o Two former Western State student-athletes were honored by the NCAA Division II for the 2013 40th Anniversary Team. Western State was one of three institutions to have two student-athletes selected. These athletes were also among many Western State athletes selected to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) “All-Century” team celebrating 100 years in 2011. These two athletes were also Olympians and professional athletes; both came through Western during tenure as A.D. and one of them was recruited and coached by Waggoner

o Western State received a NCAA D-II Game Environment Award for 2010o Western State regularly placed high in the conference “Sportsmanship Cup” competitiono ACADEMICS—Western State student-athletes maintain higher graduation rates than the general student body and the

difference between the student-athlete and the general student body graduation rate is nearly double the average in the NCAA D-II for the past 14 + years. Produced 11 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans

o Strategic Planning---extensive experience with strategic planning at many levels including departmental, institutional, conference and national professional organizations. Personally facilitated strategic planning through personal consulting company. As an officer of the Division II Athletic Directors Association-- engaged with the development of the NCAA Division II Strategic Plan. This includes co-authoring the Model Division II Athletic Department Best Practices document. Past member of the RMAC Strategic Planning Committee

o Produced numerous program evaluation and feasibility studies
