SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY

Greenwich, Connecticut, "Gateway to New England", is asuburban community of 61,101 residents, located less than anhour from the heart of New York City. A large percentage ofresidents are college graduates in professional and businesscareers. The community enjoys a long history of support for itspublic schools.

Greenwich High School is a four-year comprehensive highschool serving 2700 students of ethnic and cultural diversity.Students are randomly assigned to one of five houses. These fivehouses adjoin a one-acre enclosed area, the Student Center, whichserves as cafeteria, meeting hall and place to spend free time. Alarge Media Center supports all learning programs of the schooland helps students become lifelong learners by providing a widevariety of information, resources and technology. The school'sphilosophy of freedom with responsibility encourages studentsto make decisions affecting both their study and leisure time.

Recent national surveys identify Greenwich as one of the tophigh schools in the United States, offering over 305 differentcourses and a wide variety of co-curricular activities. The schoolfields thirty-six varsity teams which have won numerous county,state and regional championships. Students and teachers consis-tently earn recognition and high honors not only for academicachievement, but also for artistic, dramatic, and musical accom-plishments.

Net current per pupil expenditure - $16,887.

At present, approximately ninety-one percent of the 268 facultymembers have earned Master's Degrees or higher.

ACCREDITATION

Greenwich High School is accredited by the New England Asso-ciation of Schools and Colleges.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

To graduate from Greenwich High School, students must accu-mulate 22 credits based on course work completed in grades 9-12.This requirement includes successful completion of four years ofEnglish, four years of Physical Education and Health, three yearsof Social Studies, including one year of American History andcourses in Contemporary America and Civics, three years ofMathematics, three years of Science, one biological and onephysical, and a total of 1.5 credits in the Applied/Fine Arts.Students are also required to meet the performance standard inreading, writing and mathematics as set by the state of Connecti-cut CAPT test.

GRADING SYSTEM

Letter Grades: A+,A,A- = Excellent; B+,B,B- = Very Good;C+,C,C- = Satisfactory; D+,D,D- = Poor; F = Failing;W = Withdrawn; M = Medical; P = Pass; I = Incomplete, N = Audit

ADMISSIONS TESTING PROGRAM Ninety percent of the Class of 2008 took the Scholastic Assess-ment Test (SAT) of the College Board. ADVANCED PLACEMENT TESTING Six hundred & ninety two Advanced Placement Examinationswere administered to 275 seniors in May 2008 and were scored asfollows:

SENIOR CLASS SIZE - 689 Greenwich High School does not rank students but providesgrade point average (GPA) information. GPA is determined on ascale of A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0 for all subjects except PhysicalEducation. AP and Honors Courses are weighted on a scale ofA=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, F=0. GPA is reported on a cumulative pointaverage of final grades of subjects completed in grades 9, 10 and11.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS All freshmen and sophomores participate in a Seminar Programwhich is an interdisciplinary English/Guidance/Social Studiesprogram providing group guidance, small group tutorials, instruc-tional support, skills instruction and enrichment activities. The ESL (English as a Second Language) Program providesclasses in English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Biology andChemistry for students with limited English proficiency. For students who are in need of an alternative educationalexperience, Greenwich High School provides the full-time Commu-nity Learning Program located off campus. Special Education Programs provide services ranging from Re-source Room support for mainstream classes to a ComprehensiveSupport Program and an off-site Arch Program. Qualified students enrolled in AP Biology, AP English, APPhysics, AP European History and Honors Astronomy may applyfor college credit through the University of Connecticut Coopera-tive Program. All students participate in a sequential 9-12 Technology Cur-riculum which provides them with a strong base of skills incomputer use and resources. Under the guidance and supervision of faculty members, theIndependent Study Program awards credit to students who pur-sue projects above and beyond the curriculum. All projects areapproved and evaluated by an Independent Study Committee. Full-time Senior Internships in the Greenwich community areavailable during the last five weeks of the school year. Fivehundred seniors participated in our program in 2008.
