Step Eleven

“Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our con-scious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.” Meditation and prayer main channels to Higher Power. Connection between self-examination and meditation and prayer. An unshakable foundation for life. How shall we meditate? Med-itation has no boundaries. An individual adventure. First result is emotional balance. What about prayer? Daily petitions for understanding of God’s will and grace to carry it out. Actual results of prayer are beyond question. Rewards of meditation and prayer.

11th Step Promise

“We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us.”

Tradition Eleven

“Our relations with the general public should be characterized by personal anonymity. We think A.A. ought to avoid sensational advertising. Our names and pictures as A.A. members ought not be broadcast, filmed, or publicly printed. Our public relations should be guided by the principles of attraction rather than pro-motion. There is never need to praise ourselves. We feel it bet-ter to let our friends recommend us.” 1. Do I sometimes promote A.A. so fanatically that I make it seem unattractive?

2. Am I always careful to keep the confidences reposed in me as an A.A. member?

3. Am I careful about throwing A.A. manes around—even within the Fellowship?

4. Am I ashamed of being a recovered, or recovering, alcoholic?

5. What would A.A. be like if we were not guided by the ideas in Tradition Eleven? Where would I be?

6. Is my A.A. sobriety attractive enough that a sick drunk would want such a quality for him-self?

Concept Eleven

While the trustees hold final responsibility for A.A.’s world service administration, they should always have the assistance of the best possible standing committees, corporate service directors, executives, staffs and consultants. Therefore, the composition of these underlying committees and service boards, the personal qualifications of their members, the manner of their induction into service, the systems of their rotation, the way in which they are related to each other, the special rights and duties of our executives, staffs and consultants, together with a proper basis for the financial compensation of these special workers, will always be matters for serious care and concern. 1. The status of executives No active service can function well unless it has sustained and competent executive direction. This must always head up in one person, supported by such assistants as he needs. That person has to have ample freedom and authority to do his job, and he should not be interfered with so long as his work is done well.

2. Paid workers, how compensated Each paid executive, stall member or consultant should be recompensed in reasonable relation to the value of his or her similar services or abilities in the commercial world...Cheap help is apt to feel insecure and inefficient, it is very costly in the long run. This is neither good spirituality not good business. Assuming service money is available, we should therefore compensate our workers well.

3. Rotation among paid staff workers At A.A.’s General Service Office, most stall members’ assignments are changed every two years. When engaged, each staff member is expected to posses the general ability to do, or to learn how to do, any job in the place—excepting for office management.

4. Full “Participation” of paid workers is highly important We have already discussed the necessity of giving key paid personnel a voting representation on our committees and corporate boards. They should enjoy a status suitable to their responsibility, just as our volunteers do.

12th Step Opportunities Guaranteed to Help You Grow Central Office is in need of members to volunteer to help at the office,. Many of us have learned that the only way to grow is to take a leap of faith and volunteer ourselves to do things not only differently, but to do things we have feared or been certain we could NOT do. Volunteers should have at least 2 years of con-tinuous sobriety,

Please contact Central office and let us know you want to grow in sobriety. Call the office today at 221-6907.

What are Faithful Fivers?

They are the members who pledge at least $5.00 each month toward the support of their local Central Office. This idea is catching on around the country. In Just For Today, A publication of the Tucson Area Intergroup, a story noted that “the plan is used in several other cities and came about when we remembered that many of us spent more than $5.00 every week on alcohol .in our drinking days.”

Rewards of Meditation February 1982

From working Step Eleven myself and listening to the experiences of others, I have learned that the ten preceding Steps must be worked before the meditation in Step Eleven can be done with any measure of success. For instance, we should review each day, good and bad (Tenth Step), and make spot-check inventories for moments of emotional tension. Af-ter this work is accomplished, meditation can be done-although consistent effort on our part is required.

Immediately upon awakening, I kneel down and pray for sobriety in the coming day and for God’s mercy and grace. Then, I say the Third Step Prayer (Big Book, page 63). In repeat-ing the Seventh Step Prayer (Big Book, page 76), I add my own individual defects, and I also say the Serenity Prayer and a few of our AA slogans.

Now, I am ready to meditate. I select a spot as quiet as possible. Sitting in a comfortable, straight-backed chair with my arms resting on its arms, my feet flat on the floor, and my eyes closed, I begin to repeat to myself over and over again a phrase or a word such as “God is love,” “truth,” or “Thy will be done.” After a while my mind becomes bored with this repetition, and my thoughts wander to activates planned for the day or what I did yesterday or fears or resentments I may have at the time. I watch these thoughts, so to speak, and eventually get tired of them and automatically return to the phrase or word I had been re-peating in the beginning. I say “automatically” now; however, this habit was developed only after repeated practice and effort, a day at a time.

I continue the repetition of the work or phrase to myself. I become bored again and my mind wanders again, and so the process goes. I try to meditate effortlessly. I try to relax. If I itch, I scratch where it itches. If my position in the chair becomes uncomfortable, I change it. If noise occurs, I accept it calmly and just continue my meditation. I may inter-sperse some of the praters repeated earlier into this meditation. Whether, in my opinion, I am meditating well or not, I continue. My willingness to try to seek God’s will and gain more sanity is the most important thing. As Thomas Merton said in his last book, Contemplative Prayer, “A hard and apparently fruitless meditation may in fact be much more valuable that one this is easy, happy, enlightened, and apparently a big success.”

After almost six and a half years of sobriety, my meditation amounts to two thirty-five-minute periods, one upon awakening, the other in late afternoon. When I stated mediation, four years ago or so, I had great difficulty sitting still for even five minutes. I want’ disci-plined enough. I was nervous and fidgety and couldn’t slow my mind down. Only through repeatedly trying to meditate twice a day every day (missing only a few times) was I able to achieve the self-discipline to sit still longer.

I continued to practice Step Eleven throughout the day. I often repeat the Third and Sev-enth Step Prayers silently or out loud, to myself or on the phone and in person with other AAs who do this kind of work. I talk to God. I practice his presence in my life, trying to im-prove conscious contact with him. When walking to and from work and at other times during the day, I may repeat the words “Thy will be done” for every four steps I take-one work for one step. This is a convenient discipline and provides another opportunity for conscious contact with my Higher Power.

The result of all this Eleventh step work is a greater willingness to accept life for what it is, to deal with reality instead of rationalizing the way I want it to be. Periods of serenity occur more often, and so do thoughts of others. Overwhelming self-concern is reduced. The feel-ing that things will work out as long as I stay sober becomes stronger. The thought that God’s will really is the answer for my life comes to mind more frequently.

As the “Twelve and Twelve” says (page 105), “Perhaps one of the greatest rewards of medi-tation and prater is the sense of belonging that comes to us. We no longer live in a com-pletely hostile world. We are no longer lost and frightened and purposeless. The moment we catch even a glimpse of God’s will, the moment we begin to see truth, justice and love as the real and eternal things in life, we are no longer deeply disturbed by all the seeming evi-dence to the contrary that surrounds us in purely human affairs. We know that when we turn to Him, all will be well with us, here and hereafter.”

This practicing of the Eleventh Step, along with reworking all the other Steps, has given me greater integrity and strengthened my sobriety. This is the kind of dependence I need: a healthy and sure dependence on the Twelve Steps. Step Eleven has shown me real bene-fits. It will continue to do so if I just work at it, a day at a time.
