FROM THE VICARDear Friends,I wish you all a very Happy Easter.

I am one of those people who would like tosee Easter on a set date each year – say thethird weekend in March? Actually, for me,it isn’t so important when it set, as long asit’s the same every year.

In 325CE the Church Council of Nicaeaestablished that Easter would be held on thefirst Sunday after the first full moon occur-ring on or after the vernal equinox – that isthe Spring Equinox in the NorthernHemisphere. Easter is delayed by 1 week ifthe full moon is on Sunday, which decreasesthe chances of it falling on the same day asthe Jewish Passover!

Just to complicate matters further, not allChristian churches observe Easter accord-ing to the Gregorian calendar, some church-es still use the Julian calendar!

The Gregorian calendar was created becausethe Julian calendar was slightly too long. With the Julian calendar, the equinox datemoved towards the earlier dates of Marchand further away from the Easter. Therefore, the introduction of theGregorian calendar allowed for a realign-ment with the equinox. (I hope you’re get-ting all this??)

Is there a perfect calendar… I doubt it?In the Gregorian calendar, Easter falls on aSunday between March 22 and April 25from 1753 to 2400. In the Julian calendar, used by some Orthodox churches, Easteralso falls on a Sunday from March 22 toApril 25.

In 2007 Easter fell on the same date (April8) in both calendars when the Julian datewas converted to the Gregorian date. This

also happened in other years, such as 2004,2010 and 2011.

There have been a number of suggestedreforms for the Easter date. For example, in1997 the World Council of Churches pro-posed a reform to replace an equation-basedmethod of calculating this most Holy Day,with direct astronomical observation. Thiswould have solved the Easter date differ-ence between churches that observe theGregorian calendar and those that observethe Julian calendar, but even though thereform was proposed to be implemented in2001, it has yet to be adopted.

Interestingly, another proposed reformcame from Parliament, with the Easter Actof 1928, which would have allowed Easterto be fixed as the first Sunday after the sec-ond Saturday in April. However, (youguessed it), this law was not implemented, although it remains on the UK Statute LawDatabase.

I raise all this because Easter Day falls onthe 1st April – All Fools Day this year andI was reminded of some words of St Paul tobe found in his famous first letter to thechurch in Corinth:18 For the message about the cross is foolish-ness to those who are perishing, but to uswho are being saved it is the power of God.19 For it is written, ‘I will destroy the wis-dom of the wise, and the discernment of thediscerning I will thwart.’20 Where is the one who is wise? Where isthe scribe? Where is the debater of this age?Has not God made foolish the wisdom ofthe world? 21 For since, in the wisdom ofGod, the world did not know God throughwisdom, God decided, through the foolish-ness of our proclamation, to save those whobelieve. 22 For Jews demand signs andGreeks desire wisdom, 23 but we proclaimChrist crucified, a stumbling-block to Jews

and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to thosewho are the called, both Jews and Greeks,Christ the power of God and the wisdom ofGod. 25 For God’s foolishness is wiser thanhuman wisdom, and God’s weakness isstronger than human strength.

I should think Our Lord looks on with asmile on his face, scarcely believing that wecannot even do something, as simple as sortout the date to celebrate the most impor-tant event in the history of the world. Jesuswho died for the sins of the whole worldrose again to save us all. By this single acthe proved not only that he was creator ofthe world, but the he loves us and wishes

to restore a proper relationship with us.Perhaps we should focus on that a littlemore?

As I say, I wish you a very Happy andHoly Easter!

I am yours in ChristJohn

All Welcome

Thanks for the Flowers in Gaddesden Row

A big thank you to Athol & Bob for building & planting up the flower troughs in Gaddesden Row!

A few years ago some money was raised on the cake stall at our fete & donated in memory of our dear friends Vera & John Ansell. At the time it was decided to put this money aside for a gift in Vera & John’s memory, recently our cake stall ladies (Francis, Carol & Shirley) asked if they could donate the money they had raised on the stall to some flower troughs for the Village.

No sooner was it mentioned, they had been built, painted & planted up with flowers, kindly donated by Athol & Bob.

The troughs look lovely, so a big thank you to everyone involved, they are a fitting memory for a couple who not only loved baking cakes for any occasion but also adored the flowers in their garden. A small plaque will be added to

the trough situated outside the Chapel

Thanks again, from Clare & all at The Gaddesden Row Chapel

Great Gaddesden Bellringers - Sue Collyer

As Oscar Hammerstein wrote - “ Abell’s not a bell ‘til you ring it “ - and

certainly we would agree that beautifuland awe-inspiring as the bells are whenjust hanging in the tower, it is the soundof them being rung which resonates in theheartstrings and stirs the soul.

So it is that once a month ringers fromthe district congregate in one tower to

ring together – and on a very coldSaturday in February it was our turn tohost this event. There were 28 of us ring-ing in the afternoon - everything fromsimple rounds and call changes for thebeginners through to the very much morecomplicated methods of Surprise Minor.Beginners learn a lot from ringing differ-ent bells and so are always very welcomeat such events and it is great to see thevarious learners making progress over theyears. For us at Great Gaddesden it isalso a joy to have the opportunity to hearour bells rung well by a band of experts -and I hope our neighbours nearby appre-ciate it too.

Afternoon ringing is followed by ashort service and tea in the church,

where hot soup, sandwiches, cake and alot of chat warmed people up before abusiness meeting and a further hour’sringing in the evening. A few stalwartsthen headed off to the pub to round off asplendid day in the customary way!

We also rang for two weddings on thesame day in February – a first for

Great Gaddesden since I’ve been ringing. It was on a very cold but lovely brightand sunny Saturday the 24th Februarythat Eleanor Turner and Paul Draper wel-

comed their families and friends to theirwedding. We love ringing for weddingsand rang the bells to welcome them to thechurch beforehand and to celebrate asthey left the church a man and wife.Shortly afterwards the church was re-dressed for the marriage of AlisonConnell and Stephen Guthrie. Alison isthe daughter of one of our long-standingbell-ringers, Mike, and Jo, one of thechurchwardens - so it was a very specialday for them and their families and weagain enjoyed ringing before and after theservice. We wish both couples all the verybest as they set out on married life togeth-er.

Easter is swiftly approaching and willhopefully be matched with an

improvement in the weather and signsthat Spring is really here. Traditionallythe church bells are not rung duringEaster week to remind people of the pas-sion and death of Jesus Christ, and thebells are rung normally again on EasterSunday. We will not be ringing with thebells ‘open’ on our practice night on the28th March; instead we will be tying theclappers on both the treble and on thenumber 3 bell. We can then use the silenttreble for some specific practice, and wewill attach the simulator to the number 4and practice ringing with a computer pro-gramme. I’ll tell you how we got on nexttime!

ScienceWe celebrated British Science Week byhosting our annual Science Day. This is achance for the whole school to come ‘offcurriculum’ for a whole day to focus onScience. The Staff plan hands-on scienceactivities in each classroom, and we alsoinvite a professional science teacher to per-form experiments with each class. I enjoyedtasting the sherbet made by Years 5&6, andwas assured that the home-made lemonadewas a little less sour on the tongue! What agreat way to bring the concepts of sweet, sour, bitter and salty to life. Everyone alsocame to school dressed as scientists (mad orotherwise) - Mrs Waites’ pink hair was par-ticularly striking!

Our off-curriculum days are an importantpart of our school calendar as we seek toreally inspire the children to love learning, and to be curious about the world. In thisregard, I was inspired by the words ofProfessor Stephen Hawking, who sadlypassed away during British Science Week:

“Remember to look up at the stars and notdown at your feet. Try to make sense ofwhat you see and wonder about whatmakes the Universe exist. Be curious. Andhowever difficult life may seem, there isalways something you can do and succeedat. It matters that you don't just give up.”

WritingThis year we are focused on improving thequality of writing across the whole school.I hope that by the time you read this arti-cle, the sun will be shining and there will bea gentle warming breeze. However, Iwould like to share some writing that wasinspired by the recent wintry countrysidein Great Gaddesden.

Above the tree, the clouds were as fluffy asa sheep. The majestic white snow wasfalling in between the thick dark branches. The tree was shivering as a human woulddo. On the grass, emerald green leaves werecoated in frost by the snow. The leaves onthe tree had been blown away by the wind.Frosty wintery ice was spreading across thegrass. Little flakes were falling on theground. By Simeon

The reflection of the leafless trees in thewater made it look as if they were upsidedown. I saw the puffy clouds burst with joyas they shimmered on the river. A strongArctic breeze blew in my face. The grasswas as green as a frog on a summer’s day.You could see the water shivering in thecoldness of the winter air. There was ashadowy reflection of the thin windingtrees. Submerging into the river, thesquelching mud piled up on the river bank.By Immy

Sports PremiumAt our Curriculum & Standards Meetingwe had a presentation from Mrs Todireseiwho leads PE across the School. AllSchools receive Sports Premium Funding aspart of the London 2012 legacy to make“additional and sustainable improvementsto the quality of PE and sport”. TheGovernors were hugely impressed by thework that Mrs Todiresei has done to drivethe quality and range of sporting opportu-nities across the school.

- The School actively seeks outpartnerships with other local schools andclubs to increase the range of activities onoffer. As part of the Dacorum SchoolSports Network, children have attendedSports Fayres and a Tag Rugby event. Wehave arranged for all junior children to

have swimming lessons at Beechwood Park inthe summer term. There is an inspiring rangeof after-school sporting clubs on offer (dodge-ball, football, basketball, athletics, BMX, ten-nis) – many run by outside professionalcoaches.

- We give children experience of moreunusual sports (‘WOW PE’) and recent exam-ples include BMX riding, Karate andScootering. This might be the one time thathaving a playground on a hill is an advantage! The BMX teacher also gave an inspirationalassembly to the children about following yourdreams

- We also seek out opportunities forchildren to experience competitive sport, be

that through the popular inter-house tourna-ments or through matches against otherschools. A great example of this is the villagefootball league which is organised by MrsTodiresei.

I hope that the professional athletes whoinspired us all in London 2012 would bedelighted to see their legacy coming to life inour village school.

With warm wishes,

As I write this we thought that we were pastthe spell of snow, frosts and winds called the“Beast from the East” and enjoying somespring weather, before the new blast camethis week end.

FarmingMainly due, I believe, to the cold weather onthe continent, we have had large flocks ofwood pigeons attacking the oilseed rape, particularly the fields near Hawbush Farmcalled Upper Longcroft. To try to mitigatethe damage we have put out several gas“guns”, which imitate the firing of a shotgunat random times, and scarecrows. In themeantime, pigeon shooters have been outreducing numbers and moving the pigeonson, as well as shooting for the pot.

The few dry days we have had have beenuseful to enable us to apply liquid nitrogenfertiliser to boost the growth of the rape, toget it to grow away from the pigeons.

The next jobs on the arable side will be toapply nitrogen to the wheat, which is gener-ally looking jolly good all round the farm, and to drill (sow) the spring oats in theHighbush/Farthings area behind BridensCamp and the Glennisters block on MarshFarm, behind the Village Hall.

We are going to be growing a large area ofspring sown oats this year, about double thearea of last year, and are hoping to produceabout 600 tonnes in total. Last year’s cropwas sent to be milled into porridge and otheroat products by a miller in Crewe, and we’reaiming for the porridge market again thisyear.

One thing we are doing differently is that weare experimenting with planting rows ofwhite clover in between the rows of oats thisyear. The theory behind this (and it is only

theory at this point) is that the clover willhelp the oats by fixing nitrogen in the soil, will suppress weeds to the extent that hope-fully no selective herbicides will be required, will add carbon and organic material to thesoil and will also benefit the following wheatcrop, which will be planted in the autumnstraight into the clover, once the oats havebeen harvested. The mechanics of this haverequired a fair bit of tinkering in the work-shop as the rows of clover seeds have to beplanted on top of the soil and lightlyscratched, whilst the oats are drilled deeperin. Hopefully we’re nearly there, and so theone machine will be planting both oat andclover seeds at different depths and addingsome starter fertiliser to the oats all at thesame time. Time will tell if we are success-ful!

We have had a clear out of “tackle” dispos-ing of various redundant pieces of machin-ery, including our old hedgecutter, whichhave hung over since the days we had live-stock. There is often a problem on mostfarms, as one is tempted to hang onto thingsin case “they might come in useful”!

ForestryThe firewood from the thinnings of theFarm Woodland Scheme areas has now beenshifted by the merchant, and we are stillawaiting collection of the sawlogs fromNewlands Wood. We are currently in themiddle of planting up the storm damagedarea of Big Wood at Bridens Camp, threequarters with Douglas Fir, but with blocksof English Oak amongst it, as well as someother species to make a mixture. The area isquite rough and wet; before the parish TitheMap of 1836 it comprised two small arablefields called Hither and Further Moulders. The trees have to be protected from pestsincluding rabbits and deer, so are guardedwith 1.5 meter plastic netting tubes, and each

surrounded by a bio-degradable mulch mat,to suppress weeds and retain moisture.

We continue our efforts to control grey squir-rels, which can cause devastating damage tobroadleaved trees, in particular beech, oak andsycamore. Because the use of Warfarin roden-ticide, formerly recommended by theForestry Commission, has been banned fromwoodland by the EU, we have to rely onshooting; trapping is possible but very labourintensive.

Deer also do considerable damage to youngtrees This can be by browsing off naturalregeneration, thus preventing young seedlingsfrom growing into saplings on their way tobecoming trees. Male deer, bucks, grow newantlers each year and at first, they are coveredby a thin fleshy layer called “velvet” whichprovides a blood supply to the growingantlers. When the antlers are fully grown, thebucks need to get rid of the “velvet” and theydo this by thrashing their antlers on the stemsof young trees, frequently removing all thebark thus destroying the conduit of nutrientsfrom the soil, and so either killing or prevent-ing the trees from growing into timber.

Of the two main species of deer here, FallowDeer may only be shot during restricted sea-sons for bucks and does, while Reeves’sMuntjac, which breed throughout the yearcan be shot at any time, though mainly beforethe summer foliage grows in the woods. Wehave also very occasionally seen Roe Deerand Chinese Water Deer.

Estate ManagementUntil the weather improves and we are able toget on with external redecoration and contin-ue our programme of upgrading windows inorder to improve the ratings under EnergyPerformance Certificates (EPCs), our princi-pal project has been to refurbish Mill HillFarm Cottage. As this stands on a very windyhill top, above Highbush/Farthings field we

wonder whether there was ever a windmill onthe site, though we have so far been able tofind no record of one. It could of course havebeen so named just because it is on the hillabove Noake Mill at Water End! The formerlane to Mill Hill was recorded as either “MillHill Lane” or “Farthynghill Lane”.Incidentally the name “Farthings”, which hasdropped out of use, normally indicates thatthe field was in mediaeval times divided intostrips as part of the parish “open filed systemof cultivation, as we know the parkland belowGaddesden Place once was.

From Terry Douris - your County CouncillorIt was a great pleasure and privilege on Sunday 11th March to attend the HertfordshireSchools Gala at Royal Albert Hall in London. For me, this is one of the most up-liftingevents of the year and the sound of the Hertfordshire Schools Symphony Orchestraaccompanied by the massed Hertfordshire Primary and Secondary Schools choirs and theCounty Youth Choir is quite simply fabulous.

The opportunity for these young people to play, sing and dance on stage in such an iconicsetting as the Royal Albert Hall is one which I am sure they will remember for many yearsto come. I was particularly pleased to see that Great Gaddesden Primary School was repre-sented at the evening performance.

Hertfordshire is blessed with a fabulous Music Service and this event which takes place ona bi-annual basis is the highlight of the calendar. You can find out more and learn whatother events are planned at www.hertsmusicservice.org.uk

1st March saw the allocation of Secondary School places. Hertfordshire had 14,175 applica-tions, an year’s increase of 500 and 13,384 pupils received one of their preferred schools. Iam aware that a small number did not receive one of their preferences and my clear adviceis to ensure that you are on the Continuing Interest List. This year has been further com-plicated by the process of delivering and opening a new secondary school in Harpenden. As part of the Planning Process the application had to be referred to the Secretary of Stateand I am pleased to report that he has decided to approve it, another step on the journey todeliver the new school.

As I write this, there is snow on the ground and it reminds me that our gritting crews haveso far done around 80 runs which is twice the number they did last year. We know that theweather this winter has taken a real toll on our roads and over the next 4 years we will beinvesting an additional £28.3m in roads maintenance.

We are nearing the implementation of the Weight limit on the Leighton Buzzard Road(B440) with the regulatory signs to be installed. I note that this combined with the newlyenforced weight limit in Dunstable Town Centre should start to see a noticeable reductionin heavy traffic. At the same time I am advised that work is planned to repair Water EndBridge.Don’t forget you can always contact me on 01442 402273 or by email at [email protected]
