FROM THE VICARDear Friends,

What might you consider to be a no brainer inyour life, where there’s just a simple choice tomake? In other words, what are the thingsyou hold as your basic principles for living? Idoubt when it comes to it there are verymany.

In our complicated, mesmerising wealthyworld, we have huge choice. You can’t go intoa coffee shop these days without being pre-sented with a bewildering array of choices. What’s your favourite? Latte, Skinny latte,Americana, Cappuccino Mocha? Never mindwhere the actual beans come from!... Things would be so much simpler and easier ifthey just served Coffee - perhaps! With choice has come sophistication; a fewyears ago, you to had specify if you wanted aheater in your new car and pay extra for theprivilege, then it was air conditioning, nowyou may have your quilted seats not just heat-ed or cooled, but they may massage you aswell!

The promise of choice extends to so manyareas of our lives. What to wear, what not towear, what to eat, what not to eat, where to goto school, where to work, live or take ourleisure. What holidays do we take? Whichutility company do we use? Where do weshop? Which bank do we trust? Such is theproliferation of choice that a whole industryhas grown up to help us navigate the manychoices we have to make. We can compare andcontrast the market, find out the going rateand get the best deal. But, then again, whichcomparison website should we choose tobegin with?? Argggh!!

Life is certainly not simple in the twenty-firstcentury and far from making things easier, toomuch choice can in fact cause us anxiety andblight our lives with the constant question,‘What if?’ Consumer choice is heralded as theway to attain happiness, but is that really true?

The prophet Jeremiah presents us with a sim-ple choice - do we trust in God or not? It’squite straightforward according to theprophet. If you put all your trust in humanpowers you will be like a shrub in the desert, that will become desperate for nourishmentand shade, but if you put your trust in God,you will be like a tree planted by water whoseleaves will stay green, bearing fruit to the endof the ages. He sees the choice as a very easyone; do we want to flourish or not? Do wewant life or death?

Similarly, the Psalms often call us to considerour choices. If we choose to ‘delight in theLaw of the Lord’, we will be happy; if wechoose to ignore the Law of the Lord, we willperish. Again, the choice is actually very sim-ple.

In his first letter to the Corinthians in chapter15, St Paul also presents us with a simplechoice, a stark choice. Do you believe thatChrist was raised from the dead? Or not? Thisquestion lies at the very heart of our faith. Itprovokes us to give a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer. There cannot be any ‘ifs’, ‘buts’ or ‘maybes’. God has already chosen us, he’s put his cardson the table…Set out his stall. And we areoffered his promise of life for all eternity; sothe choice is there before us and it ought to bea no brainer.

But what does that eternal life look like? Withit all be plain sailing? No more worries orcares? Is this easy path? I mean Jesussaid, ‘Come to me, all you that are weary andare carrying heavy burdens, and I will giveyou rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learnfrom me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For myyoke is easy, and my burden is light.’ (Matthew11:28-30).It is in comparison with the alternative, butGod’s Kingdom is strange topsy-turvey king-dom - at least in the eyes of the world and atthe very least offers some discomfort. In the Kingdom of God, the world is turned

upside down, expected human choices are sub-verted and we are invited to enter into a newway of looking at the world and a new way ofnavigating life. The poor, Jesus tells the down-trodden people of First Century Palestine, willinherit the kingdom of God, the hungry willbe filled, and those who weep will laugh. Theyare the ones who will now be called ‘happy’ orblessed.

For us, choosing Christ opens up possibilitiesfor everyone whose lives have been dimin-ished: the downcast, the dejected, the dispos-sessed. All those who have been denied choiceby human powers and dominions will find lib-erty in the blessings of God. The trouble is weare the wealthy of the world, we are blessedwith the power to choose whatever we like, pretty much.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells his lis-teners that effectively those who control theirlives (i.e. the Roman Empire and corrupt local

rulers), will be brought low, the well-fed willbe hungry, and those who laugh will come tomourn and weep. This message is easy to takeliterally and out of context, but nevertheless, ifwe wealthy and privileged of today, choose tofollow the way of Life in all its fullness thenopportunities and ways in which we can sharethe material things we enjoy will be presentedand then we can really play our part in God’sKingdom.

I am yours in Christ,John

This past month we have been veryaware of our reduced numbers in the

tower – particularly since Val, our towercaptain, has not been ringing for severalweeks and so, until she returns, we havebeen very dependent on visiting ringers tobe able to ring all 6 bells, and sometimesour efforts to ring to the best of our inex-perienced ability have fallen short of perfectringing. On Sundays we do concentrate onsimpler rounds and call changes in order toget our striking as good as possible, and onWednesdays (when we have sufficient visi-tors) we concentrate on developing ourskills and techniques, and several of us ringin other towers in order to broaden ourexperience and ring on different bells.

In last month’s Parish Newsletter therewas an advert to try to drum up somenew ringers., but to date this has not pro-duced any response. There must be some-one out there who has always wanted toring? If it’s you and you are a bit hesitantabout what is involved, please get in touch(Val’s telephone number is 07929 650664),or drop by on a Wednesday evening whenwe are ringing and see what happens. Youcan always give it a go and see if it is foryou.

Thinking about people who ring led meto finding out any celebrities who ring

church bells – and indeed there are:

John Betjeman, English poet, writer andbroadcaster was a ringer, and indeed hisautobiography (written in blank verse) wasentitled “Summoned by Bells”.

Jo Brand, comedian and television presen-ter rang the bells at Benenden in Kent

when she was at school. Her best friend’sDad was a vicar and he expected her to goto church on Sunday. Jo compromised bylearning to ring the bells instead, which shedescribed in a BBC TV interview as ‘beinggreat fun’.

Dame Norma Major, wife of former PMJohn Major, was a ringer, as was the

writer, performer and entertainer, FrankMuir. Alan Titchmarsh, gardener and writ-er also rang bells for many years. He learntat the age of 10, ringing with his motherand father (to this day there are many ring-ing families with several generations ringingtogether). Being a gardener, Alan remindsus that ‘campanology’ has the same root as‘campanula’ a bell shaped flower which isone of his favourites.

Perhaps one of the best known namesassociated with bell ringing is JohnBunyan, the English writer and Puritanpreacher, born in 1628 and author of‘Pilgrim’s Progress’ who is said to have‘taken much delight in ringing’. Afterstruggling with his conscience, he gave upringing the bells, considering the activity tobe too frivolous and impious, but he con-tinued to visit the tower to listen andwatch, gradually becoming more fearfuland worried that a bell would fall on hishead and kill him!

If you feel braver than John Bunyan, youwould be very welcome to join ourmerry band of ringers in our tower, whereI can promise you that not a single bell hasever fallen on anyone’s head (and where Ihave never seen anyone’s feet leave thefloor either!)

As a Governor at Great Gaddesden School Iattend meetings on education and oversee theSchool Curriculum, helping to maintain ourexcellent standards. I also get to share in themany fun and exciting activities of the school. Ican recommend being a School Governor!

Our monthly value is Ambition. We will all beworking to achieve our goals and celebratewhen others achieve theirs. One of my ambi-tions is to join in with Disco Dough with ouryoungest pupils!

We have welcomed a new teacher to EarlyYears, Mrs Chloe Benson. Each week ouryounger pupils base their work on a book, making learning fun. Last week they were keento share their puppets, singing, writing andnumber work based on The Three Little Pigs.

Miss Carty gave some of the Governors a talkon IT teaching and development in the school. We have updated the curriculum in line with“Switched on Computing” units. We will havemore focus on coding as the children movethrough key stage 2. All children at all levels docoding. It is a useful skill and both boys andgirls enjoy it. We hope to introduce an after-school Code Club in the near future. Staff areusing Espresso as a cross curricular onlineteaching tool, especially good for Computingand Maths. We have introduced digital classregisters which will mean more teacher andpupil time to spend on learning and fun inschool.

Chocolate Day, Year 5 and 6Years 5&6 started their Ancient Maya topicwith a hot chocolate day. They made a Mayandrink with cacao nibs, honey, vanilla and chilli. Then they designed their own drink. They hadgreat fun experimenting and discussing the dif-ferent drinks they made. Some were tastier thanothers, but all were very chocolatey. Thechocolate gave them a lot of energy whichmade the Knitting after school club very lively.Aaron Wall in year 5 commented “My least

favourite flavour hot chocolate drink I testedwas chilli, because it made my mouth tingle. Ienjoyed creating my own hot chocolate drinkflavoured with honey, whipped cream, choco-late sauce, marshmallows and cinnamon. It wasscrumptious!”

Chinese New YearThe Library is dominated by a splendidDragon to mark the Chinese New Year. Thisfabulous beast was made by a whole schooleffort, each class contributing. It is a great andcolourful creation made of paper plates andcereal boxes. Cookery Club have made andshared a Chinese meal which smelled deliciousand Hannah Burfot in year 3 confirmed it alsotasted delicious.

Special ActivitiesSpecial activities this month have included aSuperhero drama workshop, a skipping chal-lenge and NSPCC talks and workshops basedon their Speak Out. ‘Gaddesden Live!’ music events to bring community togetherA St Patrick’s Day Celebration featuring local ukulele group, Electric Ukes, will take placeon Saturday 16th March in Gaddesden Row village hall. The event is the brainchild of neigh-bours Katy Holder, Alex Holroyd and Emily Elfer who hope it will be the first of many livemusic evenings in the space, organised under the name Gaddesden Live!.

Looking to bring the community together, the trio decided to launch Gaddesden Live! aftermoving to the village and finding there were few opportunities for locals to socialise. Katyexplained: “There is no longer a pub in Gaddesden Row where villagers can meet up. We hopethat utilising the village hall for music events will offer locals a new opportunity to get to knoweach other.” With many village halls closing across the UK and fewer than 10% of the country’s10,000 community buildings being used to full capacity*, the neighbours also hope to promotethe hall as a venue and raise funds for the local groups that use it.

“The hall is a great space right on our doorstep which we’d love to see enjoyed more regular-ly. There is also a Montessori school using the space and our long-term aim is to help add totheir facilities,” Katy added. “We also know that local musicians, including Electric Ukes, are always looking for new venues at which to perform, so we’re pleased to offer them a plat-form.”

Tickets for the St Patrick’s Day Celebration, taking place from 7pm-11pm on Saturday16th March cost £5 (under 12s go FREE). Guests are asked to bring their own alcoholicbeverages. For tickets and more information please email [email protected].

ForestryI begin this month with forestry, whichwill be of interest to walkers in High ParkWood and on the public footpath in theWater Park Meadow. We will be thinningthe ash trees in the wood in accordancewith our Forestry Commission FellingLicence granted in 2012 under ourManagement Plan. This will reduce thecanopy cover in the wood by around 30%.The contractors are aware of the publicfootpaths and will erect warning noticeswhen forestry operations are taking place. The extraction route will lead to a stackingarea adjoining the Ladies Mile (NettledenRoad). Unless conditions are very dry, there is bound to be some rutting wherethe timber is extracted.

We do have the ash disease known asChalara ash dieback (Hymenoscyphusfraxineus) on the estate, which can makenormally resilient ash branches go brittleand break in high winds. This is a sec-ondary reason for undertaking the worknow, due to the large number of rights ofway within and approaching the wood.Readers may recall that we replanted one ofthe compartments in Big Wood last yearprincipally with Douglas Fir and some oak.Even with last year’s hot dry summer mostof the trees survived. There has been con-siderable damage caused by deer playingwith the tree guards. We are in the processof “beating-up” with transplants grownfrom seed in the kitchen garden at TheGolden Parsonage. It is possible that later this year we will beselling some mature oak, from Big Wood, for which there is a good demand at themoment.

We continue the programme of deer man-agement as set out in our management plan.

Up to now, we have been concentrating ontwo woods in Flamstead parish, but noware moving nearer the centre of the estate.

FarmingOur most precious resource is the soil.Much thought has gone into the best wayof preserving and enhancing this to make itas healthy and long lasting as possible. Tothis end we ceased ploughing almost every-where eighteen years ago, and moved tominimum tillage, known as “min-till”. Thishas a secondary advantage of releasingmuch less carbon into the atmosphere. Wehave investigated “no-till”, though this isonly applicable to suitable soils, and unlike-ly to be practical here. Both methods arereliant on the herbicide Glyphosate, usuallyknown as “Roundup”, about which therehas been some controversy!

Winter crops have come through well, though the woodpigeons have attacked theoilseed rape badly in various places. Now,with the beautiful weather at the time ofwriting we are able to get on with thespreading of phosphate and potash fertiliserin solid form and liquid nitrogen. Wegrazed some of our Winter cover cropswith a neighbour’s sheep and now all thecover crops are receiving a dose ofglyphosate, preparatory for spring drilling. This year we have split the spring areabetween barley, hopefully for malting(Beer!), and linseed.

Other livestock news includes the lovelysight of spring lambs gambolling in thegrassland at the Golden Parsonage, and cat-tle continue to graze Gaddesden Park.Virtually all of the produce, wheat andoats, from 2018 harvest has now been soldand moved. (pto)

HALSEHALSEY

We have had a good go at hedge-cuttingthis winter, within our EnvironmentalStewardship parameters, as last year weath-er conditions precluded much work on thehedges. This operation has to finish by theend of February, in order not to disturbnesting birds.

Estate maintenance One of the banes of our lives is water!Every winter we seem to have various win-ter water leaks. This year we had a particu-larly bad one at Whitehouse Farm.We are as usual continuing the programmeof redecoration and cottage maintenance, ensuring dwellings are up to EPC regula-tions, and seeing where we can makeimprovements, such as installing doubleglazed windows.

We are planning to re-build a wall atGaddesden Place stables, which collapsedsome years ago as well as possibly begin-ning a long programme of re-pointing theformer kitchen garden wall. Our nextmajor project will be the refurbishment of

the Golden Lodge, which we hope to beginlater this year.We have been clearing redundant and longdisused structures in the Home Farm yardsuch as old oil tanks, the rolled barley hop-per (dating from the days of our “BarleyBeef” unit) and the slurry ramp which wasused to fill muck spreaders in the days ofthe dairy herd.

Horses and RideDue to the outbreak of Equine flu inFebruary, we closed the ride for a fewdays, until racing resumed, well aware thatseveral businesses on the estate weredependent on horses. We are beginning our annual programmeof Ride and jump repairs, which will takeseveral weeks, as well as installing newfencing in some of the grazing paddocks. The monthly “Park and Ride” events willtake place as usual in the summer and thedates for these are on the “Equo” website.
