An events expert adds up the cost of the hours that go into the company Christmas party

The hidden cost of the company Christmas party

With the Christmas party season in full swing, most companies have already spent their budget on a

festive gathering. But planning the party comes with hidden costs that many businesses don't consider.

Des McLaughlin, Divisional Director at Grass Roots Meetings & Events totals up the figures.

“Advent is upon us and some research I have just conducted on the back of a cigarette packet suggests Christmas parties

cost companies approximately twice the amount they realise due to lost working hours.

“Let's assume you have a company of 100 employees. One person, usually a PA, will spend at least 10 hours organising

everything – which I appreciate is a rather conservative estimate. At least 10 staff will spend an hour talking about the

party in the weeks running up to the event. 75% of the staff will slack off for the last two hours of the day when the party

takes place. About 10% will be too hungover to come to work the next day and a further 50% will come in but may as well

have stayed home because they will be next to useless for the majority of the morning.

“That is a total of 420 hours! At minimum wage that is £2,814; at the national average it's £5,712. Assuming your company

spends around £50 per person on the event, that is a pretty eye-watering additional cost in the name of good cheer and

festive fun.

“Seriously though, there are hidden costs to all events, the biggest being an attendee's time away from the office doing

their actual job. It is therefore imperative that PAs focus on ensuring events, whether delivered directly or through a third

party, provide a genuine ROI.

“It is your job as PAs and ours as event experts to do far more than just the logistics and ensure the bills are paid. We

must question the entire reason for the event, the motivation behind it and immerse ourselves in every aspect – from

content and themes to travel and production. Ultimately, this approach will demonstrate far greater value and help to

ensure that events provide a long-term legacy – and I am not talking about rumours surrounding a sales manager's antics in

the copier room with the lady from payroll!”

EU referendum on EventHuddle agenda

21st December 2015

Industry figures will gather on January 13 to

discuss the EU referendum and its impact on the

events sector. At 1 Wimpole Street, London,

EventHuddle, the industry discussion forum, will

put forth the question to event industry members:

As an industry, should we rally behind an “In or

Out” vote in the EU referendum?

The forum will discuss the event industry’s

political stance on an issue that has been at the

forefront of 2015. Industry professionals on the

EventHuddle (http://www.eventhuddle.co.uk/)

panel include; Kevin Jackson, director of

innovation and ideas at The Experience is the

Marketing, Nick De Bois, chairman of the

BackZac2016 campaign, Des Mclaughlin,

divisional director of Grass Roots and Brendan

Chilton, general secretary of Labour Leave.

Kirk Thomas, managing director of Athena Events

Group, EventHuddle’s parent company, said: “We

have been promised a referendum on our EU

membership for the first time in a generation, and

regardless of the result, it will have a massive

impact on the events industry both here in the UK

and further afield; for decades and even

centuries. But what is that impact and how will it

affect business? We need to start talking about

this now.”

Des McLaughlin to leave Grass Roots

18 December 2015 by Lizzie Cernik , Be the First to Comment

Grass Roots Meetings & Events has announced that Des McLaughlin, who has led the UK business since October 2013, will leave the company to pursue

other opportunities.

Des Mclaughlin to leave Grass Roots

McLaughlin said he was proud to have worked in the division for the past two years. "In that time we have consolidated our UK Meetings & Events activities

into a coherent business which adds significantly greater value to our clients, has more strategic relationships with our suppliers, and had some really exciting

client wins.

"I am leaving the Meetings & Events business stronger than at any time in Grass Roots’ history and wish the team well in continuing to build the success and

taking it to the next phase."

Richard Bandell, CEO Grass Roots Group, expressed his thanks to McLaughlin. "I want to record my sincere thanks to Des for his leadership and contribution

for bringing together the separate Meetings & Events businesses and his contribution to their turnaround. We wish him every success for the future."

Grass Roots Meetings & Events will be appointing a new director very soon, as it aims to continue the growth of the business.

Des Mclaughlin is leaving Grass Roots to

focus on 'other opportunities'

Grass Roots Meetings & Events group managing director Des

Mclaughlin has announced he is leaving the organisation to pursue

other opportunities.

Mclaughlin, who has been credited with returning the organisation to its

glory days following its restructure in 2013, says he is departing the

company with pride after what was achieved under his vision.

The company says it will appoint a new director "very shortly".

"I am proud to have led the Meetings & Events division after I was

appointed MD in 2013," Mclaughlin said.

"In that time we have consolidated our UK Meetings and Events

activities into a coherent business which adds significantly greater

value to our clients, has more strategic relationships with our suppliers,

and had some really exciting client wins. I am leaving the Meetings &

Events business stronger than at any time in Grass Roots’ history and

wish the team well in continuing to build the success and taking it to the

next phase."

Mclaughlin founded his own events company HBI in 1991, before

selling it to Grass Roots in 1998. He led the Strategic Meetings

Management arm of Grass Roots for more than 10 years before the

company unified all its branches in 2013 to strengthen its under-

performing areas.

Mclaughlin was appointed group managing director of the newly-

formed Grass Roots Meetings and Events. Under his guidance, profits

turned around from a £1.5 million loss in 2013 (largely attributed to the

restructuring costs) to a £2.2m profit in 2014.

Richard Bandell, Grass Roots Group CEO, added: "I want to record

my sincere thanks to Des for his leadership and contribution for

bringing together the separate Meetings & Events businesses and his

contribution to their turnaround. We wish him every success for the

future."

Bandell added: "With an excellent leadership team, it is very much

business as usual as we plan for a successful year in 2016".
