Paul’s Pals began twelve years ago, singing monthly at residential facilities, bringing joy to the hearts of many. A recurring theme in all of these events is fellowship. As a Christian community, we gather together to live out God’s command to love one another and to share that love with others. During the coming season of Epiphany, a season of light, we will continue to bring fellowship and hope and joy to others. By spreading the light of Christ we will radiate his love to fill the dark places. May each of you have a blessed New Year as you bear the light of Christ wherever you go and in all that you do. PASTOR’S  REFLECTIONS

January is not only the beginning of a new calendar year. It is also a time of anniversaries here in our congregation. Three new ministries were started in January three years ago at Trinity. Our weekly Community Meal serves a healthy free dinner every Wednesday night at the My Place Teen Center. Not only is everyone invited and nourished with good food, but they also enjoy fellowship around the tables. Blood pressure checks are offered monthly and at this time of year we distribute warm coats, hats and gloves, as we are able. Three years ago our Ethiopian Community began worshipping in their native language every Saturday afternoon, as well as enjoying fellowship. And every third Sunday of the month we have Rejoicing Spirits, a worship service designed for people with intellectual and other disabilities. The service includes a sign language interpreter for the  deaf  community.  After  worship  we  serve  a  fellowship  meal.

UNBINDING THE GOSPEL Many of you have participated in one of these book studies, based on the book by Martha Grace Reese. Her research grant from Lilly Endowment has concluded. A summary of the findings are as follows:

Churches grow and new people come into the faith

x if pastors lead clearly x if congregations pray consistently (and keep at it!) x if relationships within the congregations are strong, and x if everyone keeps focusing on relationships outside the congregation

My ongoing hope is that the members of Trinity will continue to pray weekly in our prayer group and always as individuals, that we will maintain strong relationships with one another, and that we will continue to focus on relationships outside the congregation. I will personally commit to provide the best leadership that I can. THRIVENT CHALLENGE GRANT AWARDED TO TRINITY Our congregation has been awarded an opportunity to receive up to $5000 with a Thrivent Challenge Grant. Money donations made and received for storage space (shed) and freezer for our Community Meal between December 1, 2013 and March 31, 2014 will be supplemented 50 cents for each dollar raised up to a total grant of $5,000. If you would like to contribute, a check can be made out to Trinity Lutheran Church with "Meal grant" on the memo line and/or use the last special offering envelope for 2013 which is being designated for the Community Meal.

REQUEST FROM FINANCE AND STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE

For most of the year, we have carried a positive balance in the capital fund. However, with the recent repairs to the roof and chimney on the East side of the building, the Capital Fund now has a deficit of $712.76. We ask you to consider making a donation to the Capital Fund to eliminate the deficit, and establish a reserve once again. We typically like to keep about $2,000 in the Capital Fund as a reserve against emergency repairs. If you have any questions, please ask any member of the Finance and Stewardship or Property Committees. Thank you for your help!

x Trinity “manned”  the  kettle  and  Rang the Bells for Salvation Army on Nov. 30th at  Shaw’s  in  Westbrook.

x Advent Sunday, Dec. 1st, we had an intergenerational fellowship time after church with choices in making Gingerbread Houses, Advent Wreath making or Holiday crafts.

x We provided gifts for 3 Angel Tree Prison Ministry children and 10 Salvation Army local children. x We provided gifts for One Westbrook Family, through  our  “adopted”  school,  Sacarappa. x Alternative Gift-giving. We had some exciting new choices this year including showers for an

Ethiopian prison and Bibles in the Ethiopian languages, ongoing support for our orphans, and Lutheran World Relief donations.

x Trinity Day was held at “The  Festival  of  Trees” at Westbrook Congregational Church x The Live Nativity was once again our gift to the city of Westbrook. x Special Offering Designations-Christmas will be donated to the Long Creek Youth Detention Center in

South Portland. They help youth in detention learn to make better choices in life. With the help of God and a wonderful Pastoral program, many of the kids find the way to change their lives around.

Thank you to all who rang the bells for the Salvation Army!: Doug - Alitza, Kat, Missy, Delia, Addi & Tyler – Shelly- Priscille – George & Cheryl – Ken & Ellen – Fente & Jane - Kevin Thanks to George for the following: A Nativity Scene was erected in a church yard. During the night the folks came across this scene. An abandoned dog was looking for a comfortable, protected place to sleep. He chose baby Jesus as his comfort. No one had the heart to send him away so he was there all night. We should all have the good sense of this dog and curl up in Jesus' lap from time to time.

This is too sweet not to share. No one mentioned that the dog breed is a "shepherd!"
