All Conair granulators are designed

for long-term heavy-duty performance

and the delivery of pristine regrind.

Conair’s unique, staggered cassette

rotor is capable of granulating tough

engineering resins at a lower RPM

than conventional designs. Because

of the three- or five-blade open rotor

design, you get improved air flow

through the chamber and less noise.

The patented design reduces material

hang-up and simplifies cleaning and

replacement. Maintenance is fast

and easy to get you back on line and

making money.

One-stop shopping

Conair is your convenient, one-stop

shop for granulators – from low-

speed, meter feed granulators for your

small parts, sprues and runners to

high-speed closed-loop systems that

feed back to your material hopper.

OPEN WIDE

Many Conair granulators are designed with large front-panel doors.

The screen cradle and granulate catch bin also

swing out of the way to allow Wide

Open Access to the cutting chamber,

making it easy to clean the cutting

chamber and perform maintenance.

You can select the rightgranulator quickly and accurately by using thisConair granulation selection guide.

Page 3: Granulation Selection Guide

Selecting the right granulator

should be as easy as identifying

your own products. Conair makes

it that simple, providing you the

applications expertise, breadth

and depth of product line, and

advanced technology to help you

do your job better.

Whether you are granulating

bottles, automobile bumpers,

film edge trim or sprues, Conair

has the machine to handle it and

the expertise to properly configure

a granulator for your particular

material, part size and volume.

SELECTING THE R IGHT GRANULATOR

Page 4: Granulation Selection Guide

WHAT DO YOU WANT TOGR IND?Consider: Type of part or sprue/

runner system, type of material

(hard/soft, brittle/tough, filled/

unfilled), and temperature of parts

being granulated.

Determines: Rotor design, horse-

power, sound attenuation, and means

of regrind removal.

WHAT S IZE IS YOUR PARTOR SCRAP?Consider: Physical size, shape and

wall thickness of the parts or runners.

Determines: Feed hopper and

cutting chamber size and configuration

(tangential or super tangential).

HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT TO GRANULATE?Consider: Desired throughput rate

(more important for central grinding),

but can be significant when one

beside-the-press is to serve

several machines processing similar

materials.

Determines: Horsepower, rotor

design, number of rotating and bed

knives, screen size, rotor speed, and

means of regrind removal.

Which granulator is right for me?

HOW WILL YOU FEED THEGRANULATOR?Consider: Manual batch feeding

or metered feed by hand, robot or

conveyor.

Determines: Feed hopper design

and other options needed.

Ask yourself these questions before you buy a granulator…

Page 5: Granulation Selection Guide

Consider: Particle size require-

ment and whether it will be

reprocessed alone or proportioned

with virgin. Standard particle size

is 5/16 in. (8 mm) for beside-

the-press and 3/8 in. (10 mm) for

central applications.

Determines: Quality (uniformity),

required screen size, rotor speed

and evacuation method (e.g.

proportional feeding to a hopper

loader or blower to storage).

WHAT ARE YOUR SPECIAL NEEDS?

Consider: Location of regrinding,

diversity of grinding requirements,

cleanliness requirements, control

requirements, and safety and noise

requirements.

Determines: Central or beside-

the-press installation, special

controls, safeties, alarms, level

indicators, sound attenuation,

portability, and many other options.

WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH THE REGR IND?

Scrap Reclaim: The Conair Difference

QUALITY GRANULATEThe key to the successful use of

regrind in plastics processing is

consistency. If you produce granules

that are uniform in size, with minimal

dust, fines or longs, you will

experience better melt-processing

properties, fewer problems in material

handling, less filter clogging and,

ultimately, better part quality.

Uniform, quality granulate can only be

produced if the clearance between

rotor knives, bed knives and screens

is maintained over time. That’s why a

“Consistent Cutting Diameter” is

designed into every Conair granulator.

After every knife sharpening,

adjustment or replacement, the

rotating knives automatically return to

their original cutting diameter so that

your Conair granulator performs like

new. Whether your application

involves an open-rotor granulator with

pre-adjustable knives, or a staggered

rotor with inexpensive cassette knives,

the Conair Consistent Cutting

Diameter is your pathway to uniform

regrind, quality parts and improved

profitability.NEW FROM CONAIR:

RUGGED S INGLE-SHAFT SHREDDERS

Conair now makes three new families of 100%

American-made shredders for rigid plastics,

purgings and similar materials, as well as film

and fibers. An optional two-piece modular

configuration allows wide-open access for

cleaning and maintenance.

Page 11: Granulation Selection Guide

Cutting Geometry

EASY ACCESS ANDCLEAN INGMaximum return on your granulator

investment requires maximum uptime,

and that means that maintenance and

cleaning, when required, must be

performed quickly and efficiently.

No granulator is more maintenance-

friendly than Conair’s. Big swing-away

doors, easy-tilting hoppers, and

screen cradles that practically move

themselves, mean you have wide-

open access for visual inspection and

easy cleaning of the cutting chamber.

Dozens of innovative design details,

including reversible bed knives, rotor

knives that can be gapped outside of

the cutting chamber, drop-in knives

that require no gapping, and

reversible screens, help shave hours

off of required maintenance. That’s

why, if minimal downtime is important

to your plant’s productivity, Conair

granulators are the clear choice

for you.

EFF IC IENT SYSTEMINTEGRATIONFor scrap reclaim to really pay off in

increased efficiency and profitability, it

should be a part of your processing

system, not a costly, time-consuming

secondary operation. By integrating

granulation into your process stream,

you can reap huge dividends in

reduced dying, higher recycled

content in finished products and

reduced inventory costs.

From simple, on-demand catch bin

evacuation, to continuous evacuation

with air/material separation and

regrind storage, Conair has all the

bases covered with simple vacuum

loaders, central blower or vacuum

conveyors, cyclones and filters,

connecting tubing and valves, and a

wide variety of conveying control

systems. Our knowledge and

experience allow us to help

processors integrate scrap reclaim

into their process and boost their

bottom line.

Modified (restricted) Tangential. A third bedknife grabs film scrap and other very lightweightparts as soon as they enter the chamber, making a clean, scissors-like cut for added size-reduction capacity.

Screenless. The screenless sprue breakercombines heavy-duty ‘breaker’ knives for coursesize reduction of small sprues and runners, withfiner, multi-tooth rotor knives and notched bedknives for final granulate sizing.

Super Tangential. An enlarged tangential feedzone allows the rotor to take bigger bites ofbulky, lightweight parts like blow-molded bottles.

Tangential. Ideal for thicker parts like sheet, tangential feed allows the material to begrabbed by the rotor and pulled through the cutting chamber with less bouncing around, fewer fines and less dust.

Page 12: Granulation Selection Guide

Feed MethodsNo matter what you are grinding – small parts and runners, large bulky parts,

film and sheet trim or purgings – and regardless of how the scrap is delivered

to the granulator – manually or via conveyer or robot – Conair can provide a

hopper/feeding configuration tailored to your specific needs.

Evacuation Options

Elutriation System. When lighter-weight materials need to be separatedfrom heavier regrind (paper from the labels on post-consumer bottle scrap, for instance), scrap passes first through the elutriator where plastic granulatefalls out while paper and/or other lightweight materials are blown through to asecond cyclone and bag filter.

Space-Saver System. Similar to the basicevacuation system except that the blower ismounted on the cyclone stand. Floor-spacerequirements are cut by 50% or more.

Negative Pressure System. In thisconfiguration, the blower is downstreamfrom the cyclone so regrind does notpass through the blower. Since the impellers do not contact the granulate, this system minimizes generation of dust and fines.

CONVEYING SYSTEMS/F INES SEPARATION An efficient scrap-recycling system takes advantage of the latest equipment for removing regrind from

the granulator, separating unwanted fines and dust, and delivering usable material to the process.

Basic Evacuation System. Low-costsystem for transferring regrind from granulator catch bin to gaylord or otherstorage bin. Regrind passes through theblower to a cyclone where granulatedrops out of conveying air, which carriesover to a bag filter.
