Career Exploration
This Week in Advisory:
This week students will be working on WaytoGoRI. They will specifically be exploring careers using surveys that
the website provides. Students will complete surveys and explore careers that match their results. Students will
also save the careers they like most in their virtual “portfolio.” Students must save at least THREE careers. Steps
on how to navigate the website are provided in the plans.
Routine Reminder:
Students should walk into the meeting area and answer the DAILY NEWS on the board(s), get into their CIRCLE, and listen to the morning announcements. After morning announcements, students GREET each other and then begin to check-in. Mondays are all about the CHECK-IN. It is important to really scaffold students to get them sharing as much as possible. Once each student has had the opportunity to check-in the group may begin the ACTIVITY. 5 minutes before transition, the group may REVIEW the answers on the daily
news board and/or REFLECT on the activity.
Day One
OBJECTIVE: Check in and share out.
Materials Needed: none
Daily News: Name one career that someone you know has that you really find interesting
2.Greeting: Everyone Greets and is greeted (students sit in a circle).
3.Formal Sharing/ Check-in: (8 minutes)
Congratulate students for meeting the last Portfolio Deadline.
Remind students of the Feb. 12th
deadline (4 short weeks away.)
Remind students to work on their Inside Out Project now that proposals have been approved. Projects
are due April 9th
. I suggest writing a notice somewhere in your advisory location and having a countdown
for each deadline.
Have students check-in and share out.
o Ask: How did you spend the four days you had off?
o Who has started working on their Inside Out Projects? “please show me the projects before the
deadline so that I can provide feedback”
o Parent Teacher Conferences are next week so we will only have Advisory on Monday and
Tuesday- how do you feel about conferences this time around?
4. Review Daily News and Discuss: (12 minutes)
Ask the following questions to guide students in reflection:
Who is it? What do they say about their career? Can they come and share it with other students?

Day Two and Three
Objective: Students will log onto WaytoGoRI and complete career exploration activities.
Materials Needed: chromebooks
Day Two Daily News: Bam! It’s 2035- what career do you have?
Day Three Daily News: What does it take to reach your dream career?
2. Greeting: Everyone Greets and is greeted (students sit in a circle)
3. Formal Sharing/ Check-in: (5 minutes)
4. Activity: WaytoGoRI activity
Discuss your career story with your advisory:
o Share your own career path with your students by discussing the following:
Did you think about careers as a middle schooler? If so, what career did you want to have
as a 12-14 year old?
What did you do after high school?
What did you do after college?
How did you find yourself in the career you have today?
Discuss Career Exploration and it’s benefits with your advisory:
o Ask students careers that currently interest them.
o What subjects in school do you think would be helpful for those careers?
o What are some things you could start doing now to learn more about a certain career?
Show students this infographic (see supporting documents) and review its contents together. Discuss the
benefit of exploring careers now as a middle schools versus waiting to be well into high school.

Discuss why we use WaytoGoRI
o Explain to students that career exploration is one of the most beneficial features of WaytoGoRI
and it is the reason why the state of Rhode Island invests in the system. Rhode Island wants
students to have the opportunity to have a personal account where they can not only store/track
their goals but also a place where they can explore careers and SAVE careers that they like for
future reference.
Remind students of the ILP component that is due at the next portfolio deadline: 2/12/18 (4 weeks away)
Share with students that today and tomorrow they will be working on WaytoGoRI to complete the
activities that are due on 2/12. Explain to students that they might also have to use personal time to
complete what is due on WaytoGoRI. Below are the steps students take to get to the activities:
4 | P a g e
STEP ONE:
After signing in, students should scroll down to the GO TO MY ILP loading bar and click on the blue lettering.
Step TWO:
Once on their page, students should first make sure they are on the correct grade (tab.) Then have them click on
the “ILP #2 Due 2/12” rectangle.

STEP THREE:
Have students read the instructions in the blue text box (read it as a group if possible.) Ask students if they have
any questions. Once students are ready, have them begin working on the survey assigned to their grade (see steps
4 and 5 for more information on the surveys.) At the end of each survey students will be given a list of careers
that are generated based on how they answer the questions. Tell students that they must reflect on their results
and save at least THREE careers to their portfolio.
STEP FOUR (6th
GRADE): For the Interest Profiler (GRADE 6) students must reflect on their results and press
SAVE. Then they must click on the “Matching Careers” button.
Always press on blue lettering

STEP FOUR (7th
Grade): For the Career Cluster Survey (GRADE 7) students must save at least one career
cluster by pressing the “ADD TO PORTFOLIO” button. Students must also reflect on their results and press
SAVE. Then they must click on the “VIEW CAREERS IN THIS CLUSTER” button.

Step 4 (8th
Grade): For the Basic Skills Survey (GRADE 8) students must save at least three careers. To access
their list they must press the “Review Matching Careers” blue lettering
Step 5: Save careers by looking through the list and clicking on a career that interest you. When you click on the
career title it will take you to the Career Description Page. There you can learn more about the career. If you
like it press the “ADD TO PORTFOLIO” button:
Oooh, what’s a Director of
Player Operations? Let me click
on the title to learn more!

Guide students in reflection:
