Personalized Learning

Each month we will focus on a different “Bobcat Behavior” that personalized learners strive to exhibit.

November’s Bobcat Behavior

Curriculum Overview

Language ArtsDuring the month of November, students will continue to deepen their skills of selecting and reading multiple high interest nonfiction texts, with an emphasis on historical fiction. Skills addressed include summarizing and synthesizing texts, developing theories to interpret text, and reading to learn. Students are now able to identify specific text structures of nonfiction selections. Our reading workshops continue to focus on getting students to read faster, smoother, and with absorption. Students have been conferencing individually and in groups about specific reading skills taught and then practiced during independent daily reading in class and at home.

You can best support your child by asking them about what they are reading, why they chose their books, and what are they learning when they read.

Be sure to check in with your child to see the progress on their daily/weekly reading logs. Suggest they compare what genres they are reading and how their times and page counts may differ depending upon genre and interest level. This will help support their independence as readers by encouraging them to make good choices that will promote reading growth.

Vocabulary, grammar, and word work continue to be part of our daily literacy instruction. Writing instruction this month continues to include answering questions about both fiction and non-fiction reading passages and articles and defending answers with text references. Students will also explore how writers find inspiration in books and real-life experiences. Classroom spelling bees will occur this month and the Bain Spelling Bee is November 22.

MathThis month we will be multiplying whole numbers and

decimals using a variety of strategies. We will solve problems using the standard algorithm, break apart, and distributive (partial products) methods. Students have examples of these methods in their math notebooks. We will also be working on orders of operations. Students will solve problems that include multiple operations with brackets, braces, and parenthesis. You will find great resources for helping your child become successful in math at the following website; http://www.nctm.org/resources/families.aspx

ScienceIn the month of November we will be exploring ecosystems and understanding the interdependence of plants and animals with their ecosystem. We will:

1. Compare the characteristics of several common ecosystems, including estuaries and salt marshes, oceans, lakes and ponds, forests, and grasslands.

2. Classify the organisms within an ecosystem according to the function they serve: producers, consumers, or decomposers (biotic factors).

3. Infer the effects that may result from the interconnected relationship of plants and animals.
