Teacher preparation before starting*Look through some books and online resources about nutrition and the six important nutrients of carbohydrates, fats, protein, vitamins, minerals and water before you start this lesson, so as to familiarise yourself with the content of the lesson*Read through the worksheets and familiarise yourself with them and what resources they require. Find out more about the South African Food-Based Dietary Guidelines at http://www.sahealthinfo.org/nutrition/safoodbased.htm*Make the suggested posters for each of the worksheets*Identify some of the necessary vocabulary for this nutrition theme and write the words on word lists: Food intake of children: food choices, food groups, dairy, carbohydrates, proteins,

Learning Activities and how to teach themWork through the worksheet as follows:

Worksheet: Food intake of children*Look through some online food stories to nd one for your class to listen to, such as ‘ The incredible adventures of the amazing food detective’ https://members.kaiserpermanente.org/redirects/landingpages/afd/*Revise as much healthy vocabulary as you can by getting the learners to call out words which you then write on the board*Use your own created posters to get the learners discussing some of the issues raised by the worksheet – food choices one would like but are never bought, food choices one doesn’t like that are bought*Identify the food groups with the learners and what is contained in each one. Make sure you have a poster on this that has been created using the South African food-based dietary guidelines*Create a number of pictures of various items and practise categorising them into the right food groups*Place the learners in groups and let them discuss the requirements of the rst part of the worksheet and report back to the class. They complete their individual worksheets to this point*Place the learners in pairs to identify healthy foods for the tuckshop*Let them discuss and summarise how knowledge of healthy choices can in uence food choices at a tuckshop*Show the learners how to make a lea et as a community wellness message to hand out. Lea ets are printed sheets of either A4, A5, A6 size paper, A6 being the smallest. The reason they are small is so that they can be easily handed out and kept. As lea ets are often only looked at eetingly, facts are kept to a minimum. Look at this URL for ideas on how to make a lea et http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_make_a_lea et
