he Belgian Healthcare Knowledgeentre (KCE) is a federal institution.

t was founded in 2002 and is activeince 2003. It is headquartered inrussels. The KCE has about 60 em-loyees, of which 44 are researchersphysicians, health economists, datanalysts, statisticians, etc).he KCE produces studies and reportso advise the Belgian policymakershen deciding on health care and he-lth insurance.

It is not involved in making these de-cisions, neither in their implementa-tion. Its role is to point the way tothe best possible solutions. It does soin a context of optimal access to he-alth care of high quality and takinginto account increasing demand andbudgetary limitations.The KCE is active in three major rese-arch fields:

• Analysis of clinical practices anddevelopment of recommendati-ons of good practice (Good ClinicalPractice)

• Assessment of health technologiesand drugs (Health Technology As-sessment)

• Healthcare financing and organiza-tion (Health Services Research)

The KCE guidelines are developedin collaboration with experts fromBelgian and international scientificassociations and according to strictstandards. These standards are des-cribed in the ‘KCE Process notes forGood Clinical Practice’, which arecurrently undergoing an update andwill be available as a web book early2013.Since its existence, the KCE has de-veloped over 60 guidelines on va-rious topics, such as the treatmentof dementia, osteoporosis, varicoseveins, neck pain, the use of pace-makers, the screening and treat-ment of different types of cancer,etc. All of these reports can be dow-nloaded from the KCE website -https://kce.fgov.be.
