FOREWORD FROM PLAYER'S TALES

It might be an author's greatest completion that his story give birth to another artistic expression, in that case, music. When I first started to write what would become the GotterDammerung campaign, I was miles away to think that it could one day have its own OST ! Rather than spending lines explaining all the good that I think of AvantGarde's production, suffice to say that this album gave me a better understanding of my own work ! Maybe because GotterDammerung is just an old story, very old indeed, told again and again, and we've all heard it in a way or another. In fact, it's just a classical tale about courage. It does not belong to me. More, because it's an adventure written for a role playing game, it really belongs to its players, they are the true storytellers.

So it is not surprising that AvantGarde, who was in the beta-test group of GotterDammerung, can express more than I could do this story through his music, the art of emotions. The saga is his, just as I hope that it becomes yours, players and DMs of GotterDammerung.

One last word, if you like this album, take time considering buying it, at our site or partners', all the money received goes to AvantGarde (not to Player's Tales) and that's his only reward for the music you're listening to. As well as getting a full quality recording, that's the best way to show the artist that you enjoy his work.

FOREWORD FROM AVANTGARDE

All right, so this is my first release under the name AvantGarde (mind the star between please), I was a beta tester of Player's Tales, I played the adventures of GD and I even wrote the comments you'll find below (what an horror ! I was forced to !). So yes, I know the story well, but only from my point of view. Fellow players beware ! The storyline I played can be very different from yours ! We also gave the text some corrections to make sure that it is “spoiler free”. Though, if you intend to play the campaign, I would recommend the players not to read the comments to keep intact the effect of surprise. I admit that the choirs are inaudible most of the time, so I joined the lyrics I tried to make them sing. I guess this is not the only mistake I made in the mix, please apologize, and if it doesn't sound well on your speakers, try to raise the volume ! Men, this is an album about Ragnarök !

Despite all its imperfections, I'm really happy to share this album with you, because it's about a story that I love, a story without which this album just wouldn’t exist.

And now let's sing the Valkyries !

THE STORY

In a world called Midgard, the cold and harsh Norrland (or Northland as it is sometimes spelled) is struggling against an exceptionally long and severe winter. But its inhabitants, the proud and sturdy Northlandir worry more about the intentions of the Emperor, a man without name, master of sorcery and allied of the Giants, these terrible creatures that have sworn to take over Midgard. While they are undergoing a trivial mission, five characters are embroiled by the forces of Fate in the cataclysmic events that are going to change Midgard forever. We'll name them by the god that has put his mark on them.ODIN is the student of the runes, the magician, THOR is the brave warrior of the Highlands, TYR is the youngest heir of the king of the Northland, and as such, the leader of the group, FREYA is the virtuous she-knight, the embodiment of a Valkyrie on earth and about the last one, LOKI, very few is known...This is their story.

Remark: as you should have noticed now, GotterDammerung is based on the old Norse mythology, part of the story's interest lies in that we never know if we're living the prophecies of the Edda. If you're experiencing a “gobbledygook effect” while reading these lines, or if Ragnarök for you only evokes a MMORPG, do yourself a favor: skim the web and document yourself about these fundamentals of the heroic fantasy.

1 A BEGINNING... By a quiet morning in Midgard, our saga begins.

2 WOLF CHASE While looking for food the hunters become the hunted! Wolves are on the loose, chasing one of the character of the story.

3 HEROES OF THE NORTHLAND At last the group is gathered, pitifully fighting against cold, starvation and predators, they don't suspect in any way that they are the heroes their land is waiting for.

4 FIMBULWINTER The dreaded Fimbulvetr, the great winter...Northlandir believe that after three years of a long and terrible winter, Ragnarök, the end of the world, will begin. As Midgard is facing a lasting and cruel winter, this prophecy is whispered again. Interpreting possible signs of the Voluspa is a recurring theme of GotterDammerung.

5 DAGORIANS ARE COMING Unknown of all, Dagorians, barbarians from the East have launched a full scale invasion on the Northland ! Will the characters arrive in time at Nordgard, the capital city to prevent its fall ? But what can they do against a horde of blood-thirsty horsemen...

6 FRIGGELMIR Trying to sneak into a strange castle of ice, our heroes meet their first giant, Friggelmir, a creature as stupid and awkward as his race can be, but also very dangerous.

7 THE BATTLE OF NORDGARD A chapter closes as the invaders attack Nordgard. The valiant garrison backed by the tenacious population of the city could resist the assaults of the barbarians, but what if they are caught unprepared ?

8 DEPARTURE Time for the characters to leave their homeland, in a perilous quest to retrieve Geirahod, the lance of Freyr. A moment of great exaltation, as well as a dive into the unknown.

9 BLACK TOWER OF AGWALD Exploring the tower of a powerful sorcerer, ODIN, the magic-user of the group is confronted for the first time to the temptations of sorcery, the chaotic magic of the giants, as opposed to the science of the runes taught by the gods of Asgard. The Sages of the white tower warned him against the dangers of Sorcery and its consequences, but these wise advice are of poor help in face of perils and impossible challenges...

10 DREAM OF THE ALFAR QUEEN This track illustrates the journey of the characters inside the dream of Yngvild, once the high priestess of the Alfar, and now plunged into a deep and endless slumber. After exploring an enchanting island filled with naive wonders, all soon turns to a nightmare, nightmare which Yngvild must overcome to awake. But reality can be a nightmare too. Act wisely brave adventurers...

11 SKADI'S HUNTER To find the city of the gods in Vanaheim is no easy task, especially when you have one of the best hunter of the world after you ! Run !

12 CHOICE OF THE LANCE-BEARER Tough challenges await the characters before they can seize the famous weapon Geirahod. Maybe the greatest challenge of all is to accept to become the Lance-bearer, the chosen of the Valkyries whose fate is to kill the beast ravaging the Northland.

14 GLORY AND HONOR Hopefully the heroes come back home with the long awaited artifact, but there's fire in the house ! No flowers for the champions, no ovations for the braves. The Northland is in turmoil, and the doubt sets in. Are we coming back too late ? Was it vain to pursue a weapon no one seems to care anymore ? Was it a plot to send us away ? Previously in the saga, the Loreleï gave indirectly a warning about the risks of running after glory and honor.

15 SOWING THE SEEDS OF TREASON

Treachery planes around the characters in the last part of the heroic arc. The re-entry of the theme of “Heroes of the Northland” is here to remind that even the group is not spared by the poison of distrust.

16 RAMPART Rushing to help the city where the civil war broke out initially, the characters are buying time defending the wall that is preventing the army of the emperor to march directly on Nordgard. The wall must not fall, whatever the cost may be.

17 THE INVISIBLE RUNE

As the final battle rages, ODIN, the former young student of the white tower faces the ultimate riddle of the runes. Using the shards of the four pillars he has collected during the quest, he must guess the name of the 25th rune, the blank rune also called the rune of Odin. Time is running out as the astral conjunction of the winter equinox is fading away.Should he spell its proper name, a miracle might occur...

19 GOTTERDAMMERUNG So is it Ragnarök, the twilight of the gods ? We've seen the numerous portents of the Voluspa. This is the age of the wolf, the age of ax and sword, the age of the wind. We've seen the giants walking in Midgard, and spreading their war even beyond.Yet...Maybe the question is rather “what is Ragnarök?” Because if this ultimate battle is lost, one way or another, it might be the end of our story, the end of everything of importance for us.So rather leave this question to the philosophers, and let's fight the ultimate struggle with the fury of dying gods !
