$uralien +ill be a theatrical, interactive, stationtostation performance8event. !t +ill be an ironic theme park of $uropean social and political alienation and nationalistickitsch at the end of the 2?th century. !t +ill be an eAhibition of the farcical and tragiceffects of human intolerance +hich, in its eAtremes, leads to chauvinism andnationalism. !t +ill be a fair +ith stands from various corners of $urope (although

 primarily from the 0altic countries and the 0alkans). !t +ill be a Bsho+caseB of theBuniversal alienB that lives in all human beings and has a human face. #he event +ill

dramatise ho+ easy it is for us to fall prey to this beast, since it does not live outsideus, but +ithin.

#he audience, as they enter, +ill be given passports of a generic (other) i.e.non$uropean'nion country and in the course of the event +ill be treated asnon$' citiCens, i.e. BothersB or aliens. #hey +ill be stopped at B:ortress $uropeB

 borders, asked to fill in visa forms and sample firsthand various forms ofBalienationB. !n this +ay the audience +ill get an insight into and eAperience of ho+sad and funny it is to be a citiCen of the BotherB $urope today.

#he artistic means of the proect +ill incorporate theatre, music, video, performance

art, etc. #he proect +ill be one +hole event, but it +ill consist of various BnationalB,specially commissioned installations. !n every room the audience +ill be given a

#he %iksarkivet +ill be treated as the $mbassy of $uralien. !t is a cultural informationcentre. 3 refugee treffpunkt. 3 #emple. !t is representative of the !nvisible %epublic of$uralien, the voice of the !nvisible nation of millions of immigrants and refugees of$urope today. !t has a flag and an anthem. #he honorary cultural ambassador of

$uralien could be &harlie &haplin.

#he proected number of the audience is ??. -ne third of the target audience +ill be immigrants from various countries living in S+eden, one third +ill be generaltheatregoers and the final third +ill consist of young people. #he proect +ill takeinto consideration that most of the audiences +ill be S+edish citiCens +ith a slimunderstanding of the political realities being dramatised.

#he proect +ill be performed by ?7? performers. #hey +ill be strong,

speciallycommissioned individuals and groups. #heir input +ill follo+ the generaloutline of the script, but +ill other+ise be their o+n creation. !t +ill be a sho+case fortheir style of +ork and +ill be developed through a process of interbreeding andBgreenhouseB +ork. #he performers +ill merge their energies and influence eachother. !n this respect, the proect is meant to become a truly multicultural +orkshop.

#he movement of the audience +ill be in groups. $ach group +ill have a colour.

#here +ill be 9 such intermissions i.e. changes of rooms. #he event in a room +ouldnot last longer than 15 minutes.

#here is not going to be -"$ larger narrative. #he audiences +ill make their o+nindividual narratives from the bits and pieces they pick up. "o one room is moreimportant than another. "o room is treated as an introduction to another room. 3llrooms must be +orlds unto themselves. (#he larger events of the :uneral and the<edding +ould be treated as ust other individual rooms. #he :uneral eventmight even come before the <edding.

$ach room +ill have titles and lettering over the doors. #hey +ill be +ritten in the

original language of the performers. ! +ill +rite the teAt. !t should be sparse and poetic.

#he event +ill take place on three physical levelsD

a) #he rooms

#he rooms +ill be a compleA of 1? spaces filled +ith various activities andinstallations. #he audience +ill have free access to these spaces at their o+nchosen time. #he rooms can have their o+n regulations about ho+ many membersof the audience they take. Some of them may not even start their performance untilthey have the reFuired number.

 b) #he hidden levels

3t various points in the proect (for eAample, as they move bet+een rooms or are inthe cafe outside), the audience +ill be targeted by the roving characters. #he rovingcharacters +ill take small groups and individuals from the audience to variouscorners of the building broom cupboards, lifts, attic ladders, chutes, etc. +herethey +ill interact. $ach member of the ??strong audience +ill meet most, if not all,of the roving characters in the course of the evening.

c) #he <edding8:uneral halls

#he +edding8funeral halls are t+o bigger rooms in the building, connected to one

another. 3t prescheduled times (for eAample, at D? p.m. and at 1?.? p.m.), all ofthe audience +ill gather there to see, and take part in the t+o substantial interactive

a) the rooms

1. #/$ 0'SD

#he audience enter a bus stuck at an $astern $uropean border. !t should be asapproAimate a recreation of a real bus as possible. #he minimum reFuirement+ould be that there are at least real bus seats. #he space is only a section of a bus.!t is a small and compact space. #he audience (for eAample = or people) sit do+nand so become passengers in the bus.

#hen the -ld Smuggler, the oung Smuggler and the Girl Smuggler enter the bus.#hey are a team of highly professional smugglers. #hey come in +ith huge plastic

 bags, old suitcases, various items badly +rapped up in old ne+spaper. 3ll of asudden their things are all over the bus and all over the passengers.

#he smugglers ask members of the audience to help them +ith their smuggling byhiding various articles on their bodies. #hey help the audience stash a+ay bottles of+hisky and packs of cigarettes under their skirts and into their coat pockets. 3lsothey ask the passengers to put on layers upon layers of eans over their trousers.#he audience thus become accomplices in the smuggling.

#he situation is thick and farcical. #he atmosphere is that of the silent movies, aMarA 0rothers routine. #he smugglers frantically move all over the space, over theshoulders of the passengers. !t is a highly choreographed procedure.#he -ld Smuggler is the Girl Smugglers husband. /e uses bad $nglish.

#/$ - SM'GG$%D 4lease, +e have too much cigarette, too much +hisky, toomuch eans. 4lease put eans on body, put cigarette under skirt, put +hisky in

 pocket. &ross border, you give +hisky, cigarette, eans backE 0e good friend. ourich $urope, +e poor $urope. ou good, +e rememberEB

#he oung Smuggler is the Girl Smugglers lover. uring all this mess he finds timeto kiss her behind her husbands back. /e doesnt speak in sentences, but onlyuses single +ords.

#/$ -'"G SM'GG$%D /old, give, here, there, put, take, hide, shit, my, yours,eAcuse me, thank you, oops, ouch, hey.

#he Girl Smuggler is a strong, butch +oman, bigger than her husband and biggerthan her lover. She +ears a studded leather +ristband. She is the brains behind theoperation.

3ll of a sudden the &ustoms -fficer appears. !n that split second the smugglers

 passengers.
