Les was one of four in Alberta to receive the medal this year and one of less than 100 since it's origin in 1994. The Medal was created to recognize employees in the emergency medical services (EMS) profession who have performed their duties in an exemplary manner, charac- terized by good conduct, industry and efficiency. Born and raised in Consort, Les served on East Central Ambulance for 18 years, some as the Co-ordinator. Also vol- unteering on our local fire de- partment for 17 years, the last seven as Fire Chief. Les also served more than a decade on the Alberta College of Para- medics' Communications Committee, most notably as editor of the College Newslet- ter. Les is an Emergency Medical Technologist Paramedic and is the Fire Safety Codes Officer for Con- sort. Les is currently working for Specialty Medical Services in Rocky Mountain House. The tra- ditional rain storm not only arrived on schedule for the start of the weekend, but everyday seemed to get a good downpour. The soggy conditions however had little affect on the diehard rodeo fans who toughed it out with umbrellas, rubber boots, slickers, or garbage bags and cheered the cowboys on. Back in town, Consort merchants were doing battle over the coveted Ro- deo Decorating Contest trophy on Friday. The competition was tough on Main Street with ATB, RBC, Main Street Busi- ness Centre and Exquisite Nails & Hair all putting up a good show. But while the downtown gang relied on youthful exuberance to win the judges over, it was the more experienced bunch from the Senior's Lodge who earned the trophy this year! The rodeo was the place to be this weekend as hundreds of people made an appearance at this annual event. Camp- ers and trailers at the grounds were in high at- tendance also and many stayed the entire weekend, including many sad, wet tents that tried to hang in there till the last. The Gooseberry Lake Rodeo was also the last stop for pickup man Kevin Girletz who is retiring after over 30 years of pulling cowboys from a jam. The Coppertown Clown made his appearance in the mud and rain through- out the weekend. By Sunday's performance the rodeo arena was over- whelmed with water and became a soup hole that was perfect for mud bath- ing for the California clown. Equipped with his in- famous dogs, Bert Davis showed off to the crowd as his dogs did barrel racing, hoop jumping, and other amazing feats. Pestering Kevin Girletz and an- nouncer Barry Boghean seemed to be a favorite pastime as the clown tried to invite Kevin for a swim in the arena and always had a smart remark for Barry. Most attractions this year were of great success as dozens of children ran around with balloon animals and painted faces that made most parents question who's kids are who's. Along with the great concession food, another favorite was the mini-midway's cotton candy and candy apples. Many children were thrilled as they stuffed their faces with the fluffy sugar and sunk their teeth into the sticky apples. The rain provided a great wash cloth for these candy connoisseurs as their parents didn't seem as happy as the kids at the idea of their sticky faces and hands. The Chili Cook-Off, sponsored by Atco Elec- tric/Atco Gas, had a good number of entries and of- fered up some interesting fare in the competition. This year's chili champ is Jack Dempsey and crew. One of the crowd favor- ites, according to some, was the Canadian Mounted Shooters Competition. These talented competitors displayed their skills to the crowd as they made their way through a marked pat- tern and took aim at the target balloons. And as the
