WHY DO PEOPLE NEED IODINE• Iodine – needed to make T3 and T4 hormone

• Energy

• Temperature

• helps you grow right

• When iodine is deficient---so the brain tries to get the thyroid to produce more hormones and the thyroid grows

SYMPTOMS• 1. thyroid grows

• 2. goiter is produced

• 3. fatigue, you get cold easily, stupid, puffiness can’t poop, dry skin)

• 4. depression

• 5. get Graves disease

Infants can be born mentally retarded, deaf and it will be hard to walk right

DIAGNOSTIC TESTING

• 1. The doctor might feel the goiter in your neck

• 2. blood test to see hormone levels

• 3. thyroid scan like an x-ray

• 4. a biopsy

• Iodine deficiency= 13% of worlds population

• (2002) 1 death per million people per year

• Poor countries have more goiters

• Western country put iodine in their salt

WHERE THEY HAVE IODINE DEFICIENCY

Countries are sized in relation to the number of people who died of iodine deficiency In one year

TREATMENTS/CURES• The main treatment for iodine deficiency is avoiding it in the first place.

• iodized salt has greatly reduced the occurrence of iodine deficiency in the United States

• You can get surgery if it is to big and you can take iodine pills if its small

• Goiter can leave scars (if u get surgery)

WHAT RESEARCH IS CURRENTLY BEING DONE • what happens if you take TOO much iodine.

• iodine and pregnancy and iodine and babies

If a baby is iodine deficient its called Cretinism
